And their was no difference between it and the rest of the medina. Morocco was a poor country after independence and both populations were as poor.
Wrong ,Whether out of prejudice or protection, Jews living in Morocco were quarantined within the ghetto of Mellah as early as the 15th century.
Not all. They were rich jews Families. Many of jews liked to live in malah or old City because it was near for theirs shops. In Fes they lived near the palace or saouira was jews City. Also in the quantries they lived with the Peoples. All moroccains they traveled around Morocco the years when there did not rain.
Melah exist in many moroccan cities, not just Casablanca. Jews weren't secluded in those neighborhoods. They lived side by side by the rest of Moroccans.

I grew up in the 70s in mellah side by side by my fellow Moroccan, who happened to be Jews. We were like family. I called them aunts and uncles. I still remember aunt Hannah and her warm hugs, uncle Kwehen who was always kind to me to let me play with toys at his wearhouse, uncle Mardokh spicy and delicious sandwitches, Boutboul songs that filled our house... why you didn't mention those kind of stories and memories?

Moroccans for the most part are tolerant today. But during the late 40s and 50s, problems did exist for Jews that should not be ignored. Several massacres did take place. Remember the riots in Oujda and Jerada in 1948? Many innocent Jewish civilians were ruthlessly killed by their neighbors. Obviously, news spread quickly to Jews in other cities about what had happened and fear and anxiety prompted so many Jews to leave for Israel and France in search of more opportunities and safety
The riots were caused by non moroccon so to scare the Jewish people of and for them to leave Morocco and go to Palestine.

Moroccan Jews lived here before the Arab Muslim colonization from the 7th century. They have established the social rituals that exist today, clothing, gastronomy, music, artisanal productions etc ... Also, in Hebrew Barbar means a beautiful thing from the wilderness and nature and the power of God in the wilderness. Nice video but there is a piece of misrepresentation there. 90% of moroccans lived in the mellah style neighborhood in that period of time.

It's a painful piece of history. Moroccan Jews were in their homeland, living in peace and lived as all Moroccans lived in that era. Yes Morocco was not as developed as it is today but we shall not forget that Morocco was under colonialism by France and Spain. If there is a blame to be made on the economic situation it these countries to blame. Ask any Moroccans Jews who were pushed to leave morocco based on Israel propaganda that Morocco is no longer a safe place for them, they will all say that they were lied too. When they arrived to Israel, they were living as second class citizens. This documentary is a living proof of the Israel propaganda at that time to show to the world that Jews were better out of Morocco, their home country for hundreds of years.
