My new year's resolution is to learn a new song every week all year. So far I've got it planned out to mid-February and I'm adding songs to the list as they come up on my playlist. Wish me luck!

You’ve helped me progress from frustrated long time beginner to a confident intermediate beginner. If that makes sense😅. I got your Blues book and love it.

One of the bands I'm in is going to play Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding by Elton John, a very long song with various instrumental parts. Not hard to play, but a lot to memorize. Great song.

Boy, that takes me back. I’m old enough to remember when the “Yellow Brick Road” album came out! Thanks for sharing that. 😁👍

Hello Jon, another great video. Learn by ear, not the only way but perhaps the best. Makes me think of my childhood. I had two grandmothers who played. One read music one did not. The one who did not read music was the exceptional pianist. Learned by ear. She played everything, by feel. Kind of where I am in my approach. For me also it is feel over thought.

Great video as always. I know at least 100 songs; albeit, I might need a quick listen to remember all the parts. I learn between 2 to 4 new songs a month for the praise team I am a a part of, so most of the songs I know are Contemporary Christian Music, but we play some pop or country songs once in a while for fun. I do know some alterative rock, and of course Money by Pink Floyd. I found once I memorized about 10 to 15 songs, then that's when I started noticing the similarities between many songs. As you mentioned there are only so many chord progressions in popular music, and anticipating where a new song I've never heard before will probably go is much easier for me now.

I just watch the guitar players hand on the neck to find the key and the root notes then listen.

That works! I’ve done plenty of that. Sometimes watching he piano player’s left hand too. Thanks for weighing in. 👍😁

Didn't have time to list all songs i know. If being able to use charts counts then I can play quite a few playing in two gigging bands.
Experience has taught me there's no substitute for playing and practicing (NOT noodling). Practicing sight reading a coupe times a week consistently and focused technique practice but 95% is songs.

I forgot to answer your question. How many songs do I know? To be honest I don't know. Could be zero, could be thousands . For the most part it is like this. I hear a song I can play it. If I don't hear it I can't. Of course to hear a song can be both auditory and internal. I'm best with auditory.
