  • Firewood prices in your area are NOT the same as they are everywhere else! This video is about why the prices in your area are different than other areas. If you live in a place with lots of people and no trees your prices will be HIGH and if you live in an area with no people and lots of trees your prices will be low!!!

when my customers tell me that wood is too expensive I remind them that if I'm not making money they won't be buying wood from me. I don't work for free. The worst customers are the ones who never swung an axe. They have no clue how much effort goes into making a cord of wood. Thanks for another awesome video my friend.

I do it myself bud, but if wood BTU's cost more than other BTU's I aint gonna bother. Business means that nobody cares what it costs you, only what it costs them.

I used to cut up, split, transport and stack 8 cords of fir every year for use by our family, after my father and I felled the trees if necessary and bucked them into rounds. I was also responsible for hauling the wood from the shed into the woodbox near the free standing stove. I am well familiar with axes, wedges and mauls.
But I am not willing to pay the outrageous prices the local lots are demanding. Seeing all the wood they have remaining, I don't know how they are making livings. But maybe the cordage is so cheap here that their profit/cord is even larger than I think.

Hi Chris, Talking about the cost of firewood.25-30years ago I switched from wood to coal. The price of wood then was about $100 a cord. The price of coal was $100 a ton.The price of coal now was $375 a ton, but people around this area still want to buy wood for $160 -$180 a cord. We just stopped selling bulk firewood. Let them cut their own wood.

Im getting 3 to 400 for a full cord here in WI, mixed hardwood that I take right down to 1 to 2" limbs. I stack on top of pine, its all blowdown salvage that might have been standing for 20 years or more, but I like stacking in rows 4x4 so I know exactly what Ive cut. Have had a few people sneer at the small stuff until they realize how nice it is to have fast acting wood when that -10 weather hits. Pretty much everything I sell runs about 16% moisture so even the pine 3 and 4" stuff is popular. My favorite is "My brother in law gets his wood for 250..." I tell them they should call their brother in law, I dont care if that wood sits out there for the next 10 years.

I've been dealing with wood my whole life at 44 years old and been selling wood for 25+ years. I believe we still don't get paid enough for what we sell it for. I sell it for the same price around our area. I also have a good stream going down to Milwaukee and Chicago areas and even at them prices it's not enough. We bust our butts to hard and there's a pretty good cost in just to process it. Keep up the great work Chris. Always look when I drive past your woodyard. Stay safe my friend

Hi Chris. Another great discussion on firewood pricing. So many variables to consider when making firewood business decisions. We all need to figure out where we fit into our own particular local markets. Producing firewood is time consuming and equipment dependant. Add in woodyard expenses, vehicles, insurance, and more. Producing and delivering firewood is getting more expensive every year.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

found this channel by chance just yesterday and have been addicted watching over 1300videos while waiting for the next one.👌.
I’m in the UK England in the country side we get a pick up load that drives in to our garden and drops right play the base of our wood store, for around £190-£200. once a year.
my sister lives in London (the capital city) of England they legally have to buy kiln dried smokeless logs which are delivered in a box pallet shrink rapped and dropped outside with a hiab crane of a lorry…. And she pays almost double £300-£350 and theres much less quantify in her pallet compared to our truckload. so I totally agree it’s your area you live determines the prices you pay. It’s just the same with car insurance but that’s another subject. 👍. love the videos massive respect for your devotion to releasing a video every single day at 5:30 👏

Good points Chris. I live in Yellowknife, NWT, Canada. We are super isolated and surrounded by trees but due to the government we have to travel about 125km(one way) just to get to the area where you are aloud to cut. The area is prime time bear country too. Because of this there are few cutters and a cord goes for $500 no questions asked. I only sell bundles at $20 a piece(8-10 sticks a bundle) and can't keep them in stock. I sell out even in -40 temperatures. Prices are completely dependent on area.

Yep you hit it on the head with the fact that people who burn to heat want to save money, just bought a house with a bit of land in upstate new york and had tons of deadstanding trees ready to come down, and with how much i was making per hour working at amazon, it saved me about $2500 to spend a week off work just chopping stacking and hauling wood to my home versus buying oil, I then bought a used $100 woodburning stove insert with a blower and now I heat for free, so i never feel bad about cranking the heat up with a few more logs haha, great video and loved the cats at the end!

What a big difference in years and it was because I bought a wood stove for my house. I bought a truck load of 8 foot Oak logs for $1,000.00 and my wife said I was nuts. Well after the first year the savings in propane paid for the propane with $410.00 left over which reduced my load of logs to $590.00 and I still have enough wood left for another 5+ years at least. Where I live in Norway we got most pine, spruce and birch which go for 500-600 usd per cord and almost double that if you buy in stores(840-1030USD). What's makes these prices so insane is that we have an abundance of forests but nobody want's to take it down, we import a lot, if not most of it instead. On the isle I live on we have roughly 8500 acres of wood ready to be harvested, not the best forests so if we go by lowest rated yield there is still almost 300k cords of firewood here, that's 150 million USD worth of firewood on a isle with 1007 people.
The people who's responsible for the forests have been complaining for the last 15 years that the harvest of the woods are long overdue and yet nothing is done year after year.

1975 I was part of KING CORD FIREWOOD in N E Ohio. We hit on a decent account with the Contractor clearing lots for electric substations. The Contractor would stack logs in a pile stripped of Limbs. We set the Stihls[a] to humm mode and cutaway.
Hand load[b] all Cuts in truck and trailer, and take the load to our yard and hand roll[c] off..
We then would give the contractors, a couple days to set new stacks, We would turn to spitting[d], for seasoning. Those season hills, grew to 14'-15' tall. From there we hand load up[e] our deliveries.
A "Rick" was $45.00 a Cord went for $85.00. In the "big $" neighborhoods we upped the price by $15.00 each because most times we couldn't get close enough to the hand stack point[f]. Wheel Barrows[g] were used. The work was long, dirty, and rough. Deliveries happened on those rainy days, because good weather days the splitters needed to run.

I can get "free" firewood all day in my location. Quotes because the transportation back to your home, plus labor involved would make $360/cord look cheap if I was cutting wood instead of working those extra hours. I can also buy log truck loads of firewood. Works out to $90-120/cord delivered, but still has to be cut, and split, and you have to get 6-8 full cords at a time.
Especially for small quantities like 1-2 face cords, delivered, thats a very fair price. And like you said, your customers are burning for enjoyment. Anyone relying on wood for primary heat is only buying from you when they're desperate.

Excellent case study of firewood markets. Our 2 woodstoves are primary heat burning ~ 6-8 cords ( real ones ) /year. The wood is harvested from the 60a woodlot with my 3 STIHL saws and one top handle Huskvarna 338XPT minority that feels left out often. That tiny saw is for climbing and getting into the tangle of blowdowns before the REAL ( sic ) Stihls come in.
Most that use wood here in Downeast Maine are also ambiance or entertainment or weekend users. Love your stuff Chris. Well done.

I love wood stoves and heat with wood when I can. However, I am not going to spend a lot more than it would cost me to use radiant ceiling heat (the most expensive electric heat). If the cost is about the same, I will use the radiant heat - since it does not require all the work of wood.
So this year, I am using electric heat only. I live in the Pacific Northwest, where downed/diseased trees are plentiful. However, the wood yards have more than doubled their prices over the last few years and I can no longer afford it. I bought a cord of maple/ash a couple of years ago which I use when the temperature gets so low that the electric heat has difficulty keeping up.
I see that a lot of the local wood lots have large stacks remaining, so I am apparently not the only one not willing to pay "Chicago" prices.
