Australian roads sound inviting. Here we hold the go pedal down and honk and flash the high beams. The IQ is inversely proportional to the number of honks or flashes. USA. Probably anywhere. Doesn't matter which lane you're in. They'll teach you a lesson. Just have a bumper with spikes on the front for when they brake check ya.

"The IQ is inversely proportional to the number of honks or flashes." Cracks me up because just this morning I got flashed and flipped off by a cranky motorist as he sped past me who didn't like that I wouldn't speed for him while we were in an average-speed camera monitored zone.

    Space saver, never again.
Friday night flat between braidwood and bungedore, Winter, 10pm. 45kt winds snow, sleet. Unpack the snow gear, space saver fitted, then the 80kph trip to Cooma. So much fun, what a great night.

JC, very happy owner of a CX9, procured it with the help of some whacko on TH-cam. It's worth adding to your concerns about the space saver in the CX9 that there is a restriction on distance (200km) AND where you can put it. My owner's manual tells me the space saver has to go on the rear. So if you puncture a front, you have to jack up the rear, take a rear off and replace with the space saver, whack it back down on the ground and jack up the front to put the rear you just removed on to that corner. Highly impractical, and I suspect beyond most average users. And as you allude, the full size punctured tyre requires most of the boot, which just might not be available. I have a full size spare that I take with us when we are towing the Shitois. It can live in the boot as there is no luggage load when the crap is all in the Shitois. This covers us for being long distances from a tyre shop and/ore trying to cover large distances in a day without undue delay and/or travelling on public holidays when a tyre shop is not open. And guess what, as a normal nine-to-fiver, public holidays are when we tend to travel. Space savers are the most impractical, cynical work-of-the-devil idea that I am convinced should actually be called "cost savers". It's just as well the car is so good in most other areas.

I'm with you about cars with spacesaver wheels and then even worse is the pump kits. I don't understand why they are available here in Australia. I did have one car with a spacesaver (a 94 Nissan Bluebird) which I used once, luckily I was only about 50k from the next town on a B Grade Road (Bruce Highway hehe) between Townsville and Ayr. Had my puncture fixed at the first opportunity at Ayr.

The other thing about the 2022 Outlander PHEV is it's a much better car. Surprisingly nimble, nice suspension setup and the biggest EV only range PHEV out there. Having owned one since 2014, plugging it in each evening is not difficult (although my one is nowhere near as good as the current model). It becomes a habit quite quickly. I did keep it garaged most of the time which made it easy to plug in.

I always drove it in D mode, and the only time the M mode was used was when my neice's hubby just had to have a go. I had an aftermarket Cruise Control (not available standard) and the CVT just could not handle the pressure especially in hilly situations. Was great with on the flat. If you’re using the 3rd row everyday a Carnival or Palisade is better. I used to have a Chrysler Grand Voyager for our family when we’d often travel all together. It was very comfortable and easy to get in and out of for the kids. Having to slide seats forward and back constantly is not fun. I have a Kia Sorento now and seldom have to use the 3rd row. Their sales are forecast to be the best ever this 2022 year, indicative numbers are around 3500 vehicles so it seems they are a manufacturer on the move.

There's always one, as they say ...
Turns out I am 'the one' in this case. The one who actually rather likes his 2014 X-Trail St FWD CVT. So much so in fact that I've hung on to it far longer than any other car I've owned. You see, because I spend my retirement photographing certified loonies tear around on two wheels or four, frequently in forests (rally), around paddocks (offroad) or around various types of shithouse terrain (MX and MotoTrials) AND I lug heaps of photography gear with me, I need an SUV. Sure, 4x4 would have prevented a couple of embarrassments, but overall and across ca. 100,000 kms so far, FWD has been perfectly adequate. So, as you can see, my needs are pretty easily met within aforementioned parameters.
I should add that, being a lifetime petrolhead notwithstanding, I am first and foremost a tightwad. Hence the X-Trail in poverty spec.
Needless to say, for the past few years I have frequently thought it's time to get a new car. It's what we do, right? There doesn't have to be much of a reason beyond, "I want something shiny and new." So I launch, in my usual fashion, into spreadsheets and interweb research. I can spend days doing this. However, every single time I land on the exact same conclusion. If I did swap the Exxy, I have been so happy with it - amazingly frugal, 100% reliable and, because I drive in 'chauffeur mode' now that I'm an old git, I even rather like the CVT - in fact I like it a lot. Which always brings me to the same conclusion: I should just buy another X-Trail. Which in turn brings me to the subsequent conclusion: why bother? The X-Trail cost me $30K new in 2014 and does everything I need rather well. I bash the crap out of the poor thing and it's starting to show; I'd be hesitant to put a brand new car through the same torment.
Is it just me? Am I just lucky and have low expectations?

Surely the best car for a mildly enthusiastic breeder couple (i.e. 2 kids) is a Mazda 6, or if it's a shorter family, just a Corolla or an i30.
Mum had two kids and we got by just fine with a Volkswagen Golf, then a first-gen Honda Jazz. It did help that I'm the tallest at 5'7, but we weren't ever really pushed for space.

mildly enthusiastic, 2? that's cute. had you said 5 or more then that's a different storey. it's no wonder 7 seater offerings are harder and harder to come by each year because nobody is breeding for whatever reason.
I had to pick between a 70,000km 2016 ford everest and a toyota 100,000km fortuner with the fortuner costing significantly more but being less aesthetic with less features and less space in the third row, and isofix doesn't exist for all of the second and third row, which it does in the ford everest, all seats have it except the two front seats of course.
granted, im expecting the everest to start having transmissions problems for whatever reason due to design flaws so I have money and parts(solenoids etc) literally put aside on standby for if/when that happens.
the truth of the matter is there aren't much breeder buses out there and the ones which exists are of the minivan type. they're ugly and underwhelming along with feeling and being exposed on the road, the only upside to them is that they're much cheaper.

@@jeremybean-hodges6397 not really. people's ideas of what is a need vs a want is what's changed the most over the last 40 years.
the need to impress neighbors and friends so you have to give your kid the best of the best, that means the best schools (public or private) the best Christmas and birthday gifts etc.
pile that on with most of the women out here who are high maintainance and give nothing of value in return( ie kids, sometimes not even 1).
pile that on with people being too busy trying to keep up with their neighbors or friends economically or putting up appearances(the rat race), meaning more money actually goes into needless accoutrements and trinkets overtime, money that could of gone into kids.
the cost of living is a minor, I repeat, a minor factor contributing to the amount of kids people choose to have. it's primarily because people's minds are busy with other stuff, wether it's work, flexing or some other thing that's meaningless(not real, contrived). That's the thing nobody wants to address or talk about in detail.
there are people doing it, therefore it can be done, all it takes is healthy mindset and someone else with the same. it takes two hands to clap. I've done it and been doing it (on my 5th) for what will be 6 years now come end of year. I'm not rich and neither is the missus, we wanted the same thing and we just pooled what resources we had and got to it like rabbits. People overthink too much or find alot of stuff to be distracted by so they don't bother having as much kids if any.
We live in a 3 bed 1200 sq house with two bathrooms :/ built on 5000sq ft and will be paid for in 15 years time after taking out the mortgage 5 years ago, by then I'll be 45, she'll be 35. I work in the IT public sector while doing contracts on the side if/when called, she runs a bakery. My mother helps with the kids on weekends so we both get a break.
It can and has been done no matter how trying times get, both partners have to be willing for it to be done. when the will is there, everything else literally becomes a non issue.
sorry for the semi rant but I try to shut rhetoric like yours down every time I see it, I can't resist xD

Hi John. I've been watching you since the ,,best way to beat a dealer" videos. In the last videos, I think i saw you at least ten times putting your fingers onto the eye-zone forehead in the nose starting area. Maybe you should see a doctor about that. Thank you for your ten years work so far.

It seems to be a race between close to 9 billion people destroying the best parts of their environment, and getting that 1 in a million that invents something that helps. My vote for best inventions are the condom and birth control pills, especially for less than average people just smart enough to know they suck at raising children properly, mentally and economically.
