Everything wrong with the mighty Toyota Landcruiser 300 | Auto Expert John Cadogan

  • Toyota has had 14 long years to get the upcoming 300 Series right. I don't think it's even close (but they'll probably sell heaps). Once again, the Big T cements its position in the industry as the King - of mediocrity.
    Toyota is drip-feeding information incrementally to whip up ongoing media interest - and the media, thanks to bad incentives and a short attention span, is just lapping it up. Nobody is calling them out on this ... such is the appeal of that fat stream of advertising cash.

    • @sajaln1
      @sajaln1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dont think so.As for the stress on a V6 engine,most of the heavy duty trucks haul 45-50 tons for years are mostly 6 cylinders turbo charged diesel engines.Volvo and Scania for example.A V8 twin turbo LC 200 was basically 2007 technology.Today the engine blocks and the cylinders are made out of different quality hardened material.This has been incorporated into the LC 300.And i have seen the Arabs(Great drivers)swearing for the land cruiser when they do dune bashing.They would not prefer anything less.Check out the tug of war between a Land cruiser and any other 4WD including the Range rover and Jeep rubicon.Due to better traction control,the land cruiser wins on most counts except for a few germans like the Mercedez or Audi.A 5.7 LC made 381 BHP with 53 Newton metres of torque.The difference in the size of the engine is almost 2200 cc's plus two extra cylinders.That is huge.

    • @sajaln1
      @sajaln1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Appreciate your knowledge abt engineering.However,we are talking about toyota engines.A range rover diesel develops 240 bhp and it is a inline 4 cylinder.It weighs 2.4 tons.Here i am talking not about a V8 5.0 litre supercharged engine.And if you say it is hyped up,then the person carrying out the tug of war is himself an engineer and a car expert of over 25 years.And if toyota's engines have deteriorated ovet the last 15 years,then i would like to hear about a company which is producing a better quality cars.I am not trying to prove a point here.The Japanese after being bombed out twice in 1945,still make stuff which is the best in the world.This does not go for cars only.Sony,JVC,Toyota,Nissan,Mitsubishi...you name it and they are right up there.This is one the prime reasons that they have a trade surplus with most countries.And the land cruiser LC 300....it weighs 200 kilos less than the old V8..Lighter weight means better acceleration.Correct me if i am wrong..It also means better mileage.Oil is finite commodity.Even the US inspite of having huge oil reserves imports crude from the gulf.Think about it sonetimes.One of the reasons for toyota to downsize its engines from 5.7 to 3.5 twin turbo petrol and 3.3 turbo diesel is to match the emmision standards and not just blindly produce gas guzzling cars.It is not all about power but also about economy and providing practical grounded solutions to the current situations.No wonder even their neighbours like Russia apart from India acknowkedge them as technical masters.

    • @sajaln1
      @sajaln1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Countrysideboy247.I do not own a toyota but have relatives and friends who bought Fortuner and even Camry.And also an afghan friend who gives some feedbacks on how the talibans use the land cruisers.I admit that if it is a matter of engines,then problems will happen.It is an engine after all.But the feedback is generally positive.Inspite of technical difficulties,they are proud owners.A 2755 cc turbo diesel fortuner is rated highly because of its off roading performance where traction control and differential locks are i required.I have seen more than a few times a fortuner puts a 3.2 litre ford endeavour in shade.The indian 4WD's try hard but in vain.The second vehicle.....a mitsubishi Pajero inter cooled diesel...As reliable as a Land cruiser and it is a 2010 model.But if it is a V8 toyota...that is a different league.It is a kind of status for even the Senior Ministers.The problems are not talked about.Because they are far in between.

    Owned a 100 Sahara diesel for 15 year, never missed a beat, served my growing family well, we saw a lot of Australia in comfort, did all the towing we needed with ease, sold it with great pride to a new owner at over 300k, relative to other cars lost very little in depreciation over its life with us, for the size of the car it was great on fuel, and I would bet it is still getting around today doing what it does best. Made once, made well, being fit for purpose for a lot longer than five years other competing products last for. I would say in my humble opinion that a cruiser is actually a thinking man, or woman’s car. One of the best cars I have ever owned.

      Yep I am on my fourth land cruiser which is a 2019 Sahara, all of my previous LC’s sold at a premium price with minimal depreciation compared to the average vehicle and that is one thing that an LC does better than a Nissan Patrol. As good as they are they just don’t hold their price like the Toyota. CD in the dash? Thats a also a DVD player which allows us to entertain our grand children in a controlled fashion on trips away dragging our three and a half tonne effluent carrier as John so delicately puts it. By the way John whilst we are on that subject for people like me whom spend six months of the year living in hotel rooms the thought of spending valuable holiday time in yet another covid breeding ground is beyond the pail hence the effluent carrier. Why the 200 instead of waiting for the 300 you might ask? The 200 series has had 14 years of development and real world testing which means that all of its early faults have been dealt with so when I am in the middle of the great fuck all I can be reasonably confident that I am not going to have any technical issues with it and if I did there will parts available locally or at least within 24 hours. This may not be the case with the new V6 which is undoubtedly going to be a more highly stressed engine which could be an issue and the parts for it and the new drive train may take some time to filter out to the dealers . If you look up reliable in a thesaurus one of the alternatives is “ Toyota” which means a lot out in the GFA or even Double Bay for all I know.

The only thing that other vehicles can compete on is price. It’s bloody expensive but that’s because the land cruiser is simply the toughest/most reliable/most capable vehicle on the market. The arabs only use land cruisers on their dune safaris and US special forces use them in Africa in active combat. Landcruisers don’t have the best technology, or the smoothest gear changes/driving experience. But they are not supposed to anyway. I do appreciate the humour ;) I would like to say it is true, us ‘bogan’ landcruiser owners do love our outgoing V8, but with the 300 series going back to a 6 cylinder, it is in a way going back to its heritage. The 100 series had one petrol V8 option and the outgoing 200 series had only V8 options. But If you look back at the history of landcruiser wagons 55, 60 and 80 series were only 6 cylinder petrol and diesel.
    I do also feel that there will always be a place for the landcruiser in Australia, they are built like tanks and give you a senses of security when the going gets tough. They are also built to last, we still see the old 1980s and 1990s landcruisers as common place on any Australian road, when everything else is long but gone to the scrap heap. I’m not sure how the eco hybrid or full electric competition would do in the dusty dirty muddy conditions these cars were built to operate on. Not to mention the Toyota support network, with dealers located all through regional ‘Straya’!

    Got rid of my Ranger as it was developing into a money pit.
    Windscreen getting close to replacement (not insurance claimable) $3k.
    Adaptive Cruise control failed and was over $3k to get fixed.
    Steering sensor was on the way out, new rack required, also very expensive.
    It was coming up to 130 000kms, and was starting to use more fuel which suggests it was going to need new injectors soon. That would be in excess of $3k again.
    I used to be a fan of diesels, but they are becoming increasingly more delicate, leaving petrols less expensive to keep.
    Since we weren't offroading anymore or carting big loads, I bought a Tucson. I think I can afford to own that more.
    Diesels are more fussy about fuel and maintenance with the added bolt on emission gear and turbos, all leading to a Russian roulette game with the bank accounts.

      Here in the UK 80 series cruisers are all corroded to nothing. I tried for a year to track one down but they've all dissolved. Oddly though, similar ages Hiluxes fare much better for rust. And half the 200 series cruisers seem to have failed suspension systems (many have just deleted it and replaced it with passive springs and dampers) so it's a minefield of decent conversions and half assed mods.
      In the end I went for a 3.0 Hilux and haven't regretted it. Rangers are everywhere in the UK. And those VW things. Hiluxes here belong pretty much only to farmers, construction workers, forestry companies and network rail.

    I wonder what would be the best engineering unit to describe the amount that John loves the sound of his own voice?
    A 20 minute video contained about nineteen minutes of grandstanding and a few slivers of useful commentary. About typical of his performances which are possibly more suited to the local suburban theatrical group where he could play the village 'I am'.
    It's quite a shame. He has plenty of genuine tech knowledge and I have seen one or two videos where he virtually dispensed with the 'performance' and self adulation and just concentrated on the subject matter. They were excellent.
    The reasons for the Land Cruiser's success is its probably unparalleled reliability and the extraordinary retained value besides the fact that it just gets the job done.
    Personally, I find the 200 series interior to be unappealing and that stopped me buying one. I have just discovered that, apparently, the 300 still uses that ridiculous bloody strap around the B pillar grab handle to hold the second row seats in place when folded forward. Seriously? That is a joke. The second row seats still appear to take up too much of the potential floor space when folded. With the seats folded it has less useable floor space than my ML350. I use all that space several times a week. At least they now get the third row down into the floor. After having a 3.0 turbo diesel V6 in the ML, it is brilliant. I have no issue whatsoever with the concept of the 300 engine. Oh, except does it really have a bloody noisy, engine driven fan? Seriously? You hear 'em roaring a mile away when they're cold. I had assumed that electric fans would have taken over this time. That's a disappointment.
    The 300 dash facia and console is nice. No longer resembles a tarted up delivery truck. I'd like a Sahara but just too expensive.
