I really don't agree. He played on safety and was usually defensive and playing at a distance. That's not possible today. The rubbers and blades of today is far superior to a speed glued rubber of those days both when it comes to speed and spin.
@@andreaseriksson8803 Modern rubbers are nowhere near as spinny as speed glued rubbers.Blade technology is quite irrelevant tbh.Wood is still wood.The Swedes always played with slow blades. Appelgren's distance looping was excellent for doubles.It gave enough time for his partner to get in position,he won the WTTC doubles in 1985.Just look at Xu Xin, pretty similar style.

Furthermore, if you think I'm making up this, the ITTF changed the ball two times due to the fact that the speed became to great. First 40 mm, then 40+. Not counting the plastic, that was due to fire hazard.
