Appelgren style is most dependent on glue. Thsts why we dont see it today

No, because he plays at a distance -being close to the table is more efficient -one needs to be VERY in shape to win matches as far back as he played. From 94 onwards he could not cope with the speed and didnt win tounraments any more. However the larger ball meant that he performed well in the top league in Sweden again also at 45 years of age, at a time where toxic glue was banned.

I really don't agree. He played on safety and was usually defensive and playing at a distance. That's not possible today.
The rubbers and blades of today is far superior to a speed glued rubber of those days both when it comes to speed and spin.

@@andreaseriksson8803 Modern rubbers are nowhere near as spinny as speed glued rubbers.Blade technology is quite irrelevant tbh.Wood is still wood. The Swedes always played with slow blades.
Appelgren's distance looping was excellent for doubles. It gave enough time for his partner to get in position,he won the WTTC doubles in 1985.Just look at Xu Xin, pretty similar style.

      @@dickn.ormous1064 No.
There have been made scientifical tests with a well-known rubber manufacturer.
Furthermore, if you think I'm making up this, the ITTF changed the ball two times due to the fact that the speed became to great.
First 40 mm, then 40+. Not counting the plastic, that was due to fire hazard.
