Every Good Player Does This - TRAIL WRIST BEND & SHAFT LEAN

  • The most elusive position for amateur golfers to replicate in their swings is FORWARD SHAFT LEAN at impact.
Everyone knows that when the pros hit their iron shots, they exhibit forward shaft lean. This position is achieved by keeping the trail wrist bent backwards (extended) for longer in the downswing than the majority of players are doing. The Golfing Machine book calls this the Right Wrist Flying Wedge (RWFW) or Right Forearm Flying Wedge (RFFW) to describe the “wedge-shaped” angle formed between the trail wrist/forearm and the shaft.
Typically, amateur golfers demonstrate a “casting” movement in the downswing which leads to inconsistent contact, and a significant loss of distance. This “casting” is the bane of thousands of golfers’ lives, constantly struggling with fat and thin shots, as well as topping the ball and striking off-centre on the club face resulting in a significant loss in distance.
Training the correct shaft lean at impact has typically proven to be difficult due to the complex nature of the wrist motion throughout the swing, but the Precision Impact training aid from Pure Swing Products manages to provide golfers with the feedback necessary to acheive the perfect impact conditions and wrist angles to powerfully compress the ball with every club in your bag!
In this video, I’ll show you how the Precision Impact training aid helps to train forward shaft lean at impact for crispy ball striking every time and include some drills to help you build up from small chip and punch shots to full swings.

Wow, Just got this training device. I've been taking lessons at golf tech and my instructor who has been bee best instructor in the state for 4 years, says " this (shaft forward) is the most difficult thing to teach and accomplish!! On the first day at the range can't believe how many many things this improves in the golf swing. The front edge of my 7 iron was totally green. Nothing on botton of iron at all. ORDER ON RIGHT NOW!!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT ONE BIT

Rob, watching your videos has transformed my golf swing from 30 years of inconsistent ball striking to a compressing the ball at impact swing. 8 iron distance went from 120 yards sometimes to a consistent 150 yards. I'm buying this device just to help in my practice so thanks for the referral.
Big question, hopefully you'll see it: can you use this device with driver/fairway woods swing or is this solely for irons?
Thanks again for all your content- it really has transformed my enjoyment of the game.

Hello, I'm a (non youtube) instructor and yes, 95-99% of people that come for help use the wrists/hands to move the clubhead. Some don't know they are doing it. Others are aware, but can't stop. Seeing the title of this video, I naturally was very interested to watch the video. Very good presentation of the problem, and how to use this device. I have previously scoured the internet looking for anything that will STOP a player from the scourge of early release. I bought this one and a couple of others. None of them did what I was looking for, but we'll just talk about this one. I was disappointed because although it may help one feel resistance when they early release...it will not prevent them from doing so. I tried it myself and with the fully cocked position and locked in....I could still uncock the wrists due to the flexibility of the device (thus why you can hit a full shot and still have a release later in the follow through). So it wasn't what I was hoping for and I'm not saying it won't help some people but again it doesn't prevent early release. Also was disappointed that I tried to return it being dissatisfied and was told that unless it has a manufacturing defect there is no refund offered. I ended up building my own device from 3/4 PVC pipe, a 45 degree connector and a cut in half 4 inch pipe connector to cup the trail arm. It works the way I want it to.
I think you are a good instructor, this comment is not meant to be a negative at you, I'm just afraid many will buy this aid and it not perform how they think it will.

    Just watched your video!
All I can say, is I bought this about a month ago after watching someone else’s video .
It doesn’t fit snugly to the back of my right hand, would be nice if they included some type of spacers for that. I just found a couple wedges to insert under the hand pad and it fits okay.
I did take it straight to the course though, lol!
Put it on, left it on and played 9 holes.
It did allow me to recover about a clubs distance back. And it does promote a nice tight draw.
Now if I could just get some more distance back, when I started playing-self taught- I hit the ball so pure and had that low boring ball flight. Watching videos for years sure did screw my game up as far as distance goes. Seems swinging slow and smooth just doesn’t create the distance needed….lol!
Nope, I’m not playing the senior tees!
Anyway! I do approve of this training device and if anyone is new to golf, I’d buy this over an expensive driver!!!

Rob, I really appreciate you reviewing this product. In the past, I've used The Secret (very uncomfortable) and Gary Wiren's The Key (not bad). The Right Wrist Flying Wedge is definitely key, and I tend to throw it away for a variety of reasons. Punch drills, and your swing hard stop quick, used in concert with these tools, is great for dialing in impact and there is no better sensation than compressing the golf ball. Isn't that the REAL reason we all play? 🙂

I tried Greg Normans Secret many years ago. It really helped but could not continue with it for very long as index finger joint really hurt. I actually still have The Secret sitting behind me here. This device that Rob promotes looks really useful. Perhaps something all golfers should use to get the correct understanding of the right wrist when they are first starting out on the sport.

Very interesting. I was taught 30 years ago to cock the wrists and "roll" through impact. Having changed to hingeing and minimising wrist cock I hit the ball lower, further and with draw. But it still needs work (unlearning is difficult). I'm going to look into buying one of these. Changing subject, hope you guys make top 4 ahead of "The Arse" but watch us go in future now we've got "E10H" (Erik ten Hag) 😉

I purchased percision impact to help with my flip inculding doing your drills. I try to keep my right wrist bent way past impact to try to exaggerate the feeling. What I see on camera is keeping right wrist back very good when I swing above the ball as a practice swing. When I try the same thing hitting a ball I release because obviously my brain now knows I have to hit the ball. Have you experienced that with any of your students and what drills worked to help?

2nd time putting these comments out:
Hi Rob. As usual, great content. I’ve watched this video a number of times and have purchased said piece of kit. Can you just clarify please. Re the wrist hinge and the sensation I am aiming for, am I looking to bend my right thumb towards my body at the top of the swing, and/or bend my right wrist to the right as if I am holding a plate on the palm of my right hand at the top of the swing? Either one of these moves, independently, makes the device click, but I’m not 100% sure which, (or both), I should be doing. Kind regards, Al

Hi Rob, should you also have the shaft lean (maybe not as much as irons) with the driver? If Iwant to do that with the driver, I feel like I should have a strong grip or a bowed wrist with a neutral grip so I can square the club face so the club face isn't open during the impact.

Would you say that another benefit of the training aid, in addition to keeping the RFFW in tact through impact, is that it also helps with the proper follow through (i.e., that it makes the club travel in the correct path and manner in the follow through)? Appreciate any thoughts you can provide. Thanks

Great video as always Rob. This looks really useful for what I'm working on with Ayumi. Have you by chance tried this on any of your female students, or junior golfers? I'm wondering if the length from wrist hinge to where it attaches at the two fingers might be too long for my small hands. I saw a couple of female college players featured in the video on the website, so that's a good sign.

Hi Rob, the only issues I've had are sometimes hitting fat or topped shots, albeit a minority! As you said in your video, you have to remember that your trail arm is shortening so-to-speak, so need to have and maintain some side-bend..
It does come across though as a bit of a punch shot, so not entirely sure it works with full shots!?
