The kicker that most people today won't quite get is: This is NOT a music video. This is a RECORDING of a PROGRAM you could run on your PC just like Word or Notepad. With a kick-ass soundtrack though.
I grew up with an Atari ST and spent more time watching demos / cracktros, than actually playing games. I still use techniques from back then in my music. I might be the exception, but for me it's a perfect music video.
eni nothing’s the matter. Just glad to see that ASM is still attracting new visitors and creating new demoscene fans. I’ve been following the PC scene since 1991
Hi. I used to be in the scene in the late eighties and early ninties, I turned into a good coder. I'm looking for some Amiga demos, the source code, actually...I want to try some sinewave stuff.
I'd love to see any "old school" demo brought up to date .... ST or Amiga .... just to proove it can be done again ... Syntex Terror Delta Force or Sowatt by the Carebears
Perhaps a stupid question, but considering 'classic'/old demo scene, where the key was to push technological abilities to the edge, I can understand this isn't much the case anymore these days, with super powerful hardware and a variety of systems. So, while I think this is absolutely amazing, how much is this a pre-calced run of effects made in Notch (which as I understand is software to create VJ / large TV presentations), and how much of it is a display of coding skills? It "feels" more like a display of creativity, vs a display of coding skills, but I could be way off the mark here. If anyone could share some background or knows of a site where demos like this are explained, I'd be much obliged.
@@animaze86 flashy things gets votes, it's not like these demo competition are code reviews so i think it's understandable. that said, it's ofcourse a bit sad that coding will be taken out of the equation in some of these file size unrestricted categories.
Notch was created by the makers of this demo. I don't think there's anything wrong with having a framework/engine that helps you build the actual effects. It doesn't make it any less impressive, rather the opposite. Imagine not just raw coding some cool effect for a single scene but turning it into a building block for other scenes.
...and I scoured my TH-cam playlists thinking it was Orange or Nooon Stars, only to see this. It seems there's lots of homage in this one! nice work Gloom.
no but seriously, isnt there a billionaire out there who loves demos? if you were a billionaire and you loved demos, wouldnt you, idk, spend some resources to getting the word out? 52k views, its bullshit cause we know there are a million people out there who would thumbs up this video. I feel like there is a disconnect between the high level of art here and the people out there who would appreciate it but dont know about it.
notch is some crap making it easy to code such visual stuff.. quote from their website "Create Mind-blowing Motion Graphics, VFX and VR with a Real-time WYSIWYG Workflow Trusted by the world’s biggest artists, brands and events, Notch is the first tool that enables you to create interactive and video content in one unified real-time environment."
We've reached a plateau where design is more the focus. With the commercialism capitalizing, I had hoped it was just a in-house / custom tooll.io ( wink*wink ;) but this makes me like Orange Dying Stars even more. While removing technical obstacles from more visual focused designs, this is clear example of how it does make for nice eye candy. But, the scene started out as more technical focused, whats next?
I'm pretty saddened to learn this was made in Notch too. Back in the day kids spent months learning how to build these effects in C(++), Pascal etc or building their own workflow tools from scratch. Now it is just a matter of dragging in some boxes into a node based gui and tweaking/automating levels. It's a well done demo though.
i'm a demoscener since 1993 - this is the best demo i've ever seen ;)

so. many. shaders.
5 years later this is still from the future.
Best demo I have ever seen in my life! Everything was just perfect. Soundtrack was great too.
Absolutely massive hit ! Istant winner of best demo 2018
Absolutely insane. I've never watched any demos before, but going to ASM18 and seeing this live gave me goosebumps. Big ups to CNCD & Fairlight!
well it was about a time to get introduced to demoscene :>
Wait.. you'd never seen a demo, but you went to Assembly 2018?
@@one-bell Yeah, it was the first Assembly I went to. What's the matter?

@eni when assembly started, it was primarily a demo/music compo.
I had seriously hard time remain seated and still when this started playing in the demo compo.
litterally found about the demo stuff 10 min ago, this is super cool.
Next step is to read that .nfo file son
This is insanely cool ! Technical mastery for sure, and great art direction !
The best demo ever.
love this demo!!!!!!!
@3:30 Inside / CNCD 96. Nice touch Gloom!
Thanks ;) (Btw: used with permission from Yolk of course)
that demo was the most absolutely massivest bomb back then, totally unreal
Eyegaboom!
you gotta love that amen break section

Shopping cart reference to Farbrausch
I'm pretty sure the sound from 2:20 is from debris, too.
This looks freakin' EPIC!
Mindbending. Next level!!!!
FATTEST FUCKING TUNE EVER OHMIBOD!! (Really liked the whole thing a lot tho.)
fairlight own it!
Endlessly beautiful 🤩❤💜🧡💛💚💙🙏
This demo is really really good, far away from this year 2024

I guess this goes a long way in answering my own question: th-cam.com/video/HhHBeXthGzA/w-d-xo.html
A lot of sceners share your opinion that a lot of the newer productions are more about style and design now than raw coding and artistry talent.

Incredible.
Damn this was neat and tight package. Definitely do listen it with a banging PA system.
Insane, tried this on my PC but 8GB of RAM seems to be way too less and crashes.

awesome!
Amazing...
Damn good
o ja jebie.. dope stuff

Do I need a 512kb memory expansion and a 68881 for this to run 50fps?
I wish the sound track was better but otherwise a VERY nice demo.
Time 3:29 - do I hear in the background sample from Inside demo by CNCD???
Yes, confirmed by Gloom here :) www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=77399#c831826

i dont know how i feel about using tools such as notch and unity...
You realize fairlight/cncd basically made Notch, right?
This beat ASDs demo? WTF
Is it a real-time demo or a render? "Made with Notch". What does that mean?

I guess my definition of a demo is more old-school then.

First instruction.
Yeah, good luck making something like this at home with contributions from a couple of your BBS buddies you formed a group with.
#jawdrop
Car Bomb should have used this for a music video

you are target market for the visually generic demo
It was great until 2:35 when the shitty gangster rap styled singing kicked in.
Something moronic taking over something clever.
