    I always prefer no-date variants if I can get them. I've been known to ignore the date wheel when putting on a watch, as I can't see them all very easily. But for those whose OCD prevents having a random date showing, your fantastic 1-5 list could be slightly extended...
    #6: You don't have to set a date all of the time for those of us who have multiple watches in our collection and rotate watches with frequency. Which lends itself to...
    #7: You don't have to worry about whether the time is between 9 pm and 3am when setting the date so you don't shear the gears

    I’ve seen quite a few watches with what I consider badly positioned date windows or miss matched date wheel background colours. I don’t ever recall seeing a no date watch and thinking it needs a date complication.

    Completely agree with your sentiments. In a hobby where complication is frequently associated with higher quality and increased utility, there’s something deeply satisfying about a beautifully made, simple hours and minutes only piece. I’ve been looking for such a watch (with a pure white dial and black Roman numerals) for some time. Having balked at handing over many, many thousands of pounds to Patek or Vacheron I was about to pull the trigger on a Girard Perregaux Classique Elegance Ultra-thin. However, I spotted a vintage manual wind Garrard on line in superb condition with the identical aesthetic for a fraction of the cost, so bought that instead. Sometimes less is more!

  • @Thomas_Burnett
    @Thomas_Burnett 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree that a no date Watch keeps you in the moment more than one with a date complication.
    Thinking about clocks 🕰 in general, they tend not to have date complications and allow the observer to take in the required information without any distraction.
    As far as Watches go, there is nothing more convenient than a wind and wear no date piece. Clearly presented and uncluttered.
    However, there is a place for all complications in this wonderful horological world and the date isn’t the most bewildering of them all. Some find it a necessity.
    Of course it all boils down to personal preference but, thought provoking videos like this help us with our decisions. Great work yet again IDGuy! ✊

    No date, diver, pilot or racer watches. How many people who actually own these watches are deep sea divers or pilots or even race car drivers? Nowadays mostly everyone owns a smartphone. So basically a watch on the wrist is more of an accessory or jewellery. In my opinion Oyster Perpetual 39 is the best everyday watch. And if you are feeling adventurous buy the best Mudmaster. ))

    Everything you say is so right. I couldn’t agree more. But I would like to argue that the second hand is just as much an unnecessary complication. The hour and minute hands are by definition what a watch are about, to tel the time. The second hand however is a device which distractingly moves along all the time and thereby instantly attracts one’s attention and pulls it away from the important thing, to register the time! It would be wonderful if you could make a presentation of watches with only hour and minutes hands. At first they might look sparse and bare, but If made properly they are so classy, calming and also perfect devices to read the time with, with just a shortest glance. In such a presentation it would be fantastic if you could have a look at the plain a simple 38 mm Piaget Altiplano (reference GOA29112 in white gold, and GOA31114 in rose gold) It’s design is for me close to perfection, so classy so easy to read! I just wish Piaget would make the hours hand slightly shorter and the minutes hand slightly longer to differentiate them more.
    Thanks for this wonderful channel and it’s information on design and it’s relevance to watches.

    Also with a no-date you don't have to adjust the date 5 times a year, assuming you don't have an annual or perpetual calendar. I find the last point extremely interesting - how a watch tells the time alters how you perceive time. e.g. a quartz or deadbeat movement is precise but reminds me of dripping water which I find slightly foreboding, or a rotary monthly calendar (e.g. Skydweller or Globemaster) I find quite melancholy as it reminds me of the passing of time

    i made this point on the other video, but for me, the date complication frees me from my cellphone. which is one of the main reasons I wear a watch. to escape being constantly connected to the internet.
    i pretty much only like date complications that are clearly part of the initial design. the omega globemaster for example.

  • @gfan1972

    An interesting point of view and I see it, but I feel the same of second hands being located offset. To be honest other than showing me my watch is running, second hands are also distracting. Especially if they are not stacked with the hour/minute hands, at least in my opinion. I am loving the content, thanks!

    • @theJade
      @theJade 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are referring to the seconds hand being on a subdial, there is a reason why most vintage watches have this and that is because of the simpler construction. There is a really interesting article about this on time zone "The pursuit of center seconds". I do agree though, that based on some of these arguments, we should get rid of the seconds hand. Ming does it and functionally, it works just fine.

    Agree to disagree 😆
    I can certainly see where the appeal comes from, but still. It would have to be a really exquisite watch for me to let go of the fact that it has no date. And even then it will probably not be a daily watch.
    With all the smart phones and screens displaying the date all the time, my first reaction for finding out the date is always my watch. I make a reminder on the 30th of every month to make sure I advance the date when needed.
    For me the ultimate 1 watch collection is an automatic perpetual calendar. So there's that...

    Yes, i'am also not a lover of dated watches however so many have them you end up making compromises, never liked the idea of messing around or trying to remember at the end of the month to set the watch. Just goes to show that after all this time a annual or perpetual calander must cost a lot to produce because more affordable watches don't have them. One reason why I ended up purchasing two Tudor BB.

    Yes, I completely agree, the simpler, the better. I have a no-date Rolex Submariner purchased new in April 2003 that I’ve been wearing daily since then. It keeps perfect time and has yet to be serviced. Since then, I have also purchased a new Rolex Hulk in December 2019. I agree, date watches give me anxiety that kept me from using watches in general. Once I no longer thought of a date as necessary on watch, I became open to using a watch again and seeing them as an aid rather than a boss telling me how little time I have. Sounds dumb but it really has improved my whole life. I feel like I have more control of how I spend my time, instead of just avoiding it in general.

    Aesthetically yes, no date watches often surpass their date equipped brethren. I own a Breitling 40 Chronometer Premier and find this dial extremely well designed, at least to my taste.
    But watches are also instruments, which are helpful in a range of situations, from the office to the cockpit. My job involves planning and scheduling all day long. When my watch cannot tell me the date, I feel like Apollo 13 crew without a chronograph.

    • @gilbert4394
      @gilbert4394 ปีที่แล้ว

      We’ll put. the “watch community” has forgotten that watches are tools in the first place, and not just jewelry with pedigree to nurture their fragile egos. Not to mention that in todays world the date is actually more crucial than the time, imo. We have clocks on the stove, the dashboard, our phones and laptops, etc, but we are not constantly bombarded with the date in a comparable way. That’s why it’s so crucial for so many to have a date window on their watch.

    My only watch without a date is my Breitling navitimer reissue 1959 and thank goodness it has so much going on in the dial without cramming a date window in there. But the really great thing is being a manual wind, when it stops I just wind it reset the time throw it on my wrist and go. No date to mess with.

    I am totally "no date". My 4 Nomos, 3 Stowas, 2 Glycine are all no date, the other watches in my colletion have good integrated and not disturbing date-design (e.g. Sinn) so that I can live with it. Hate cyclops (Rolex), big dates (Lange, Glashütte), and framed date windows (Longines etc.). Even worse is a white background of the date on a black dial - or the other way round.

      I respect your opinion partner but with that criteria your watch selection may be rather small. And BTW you just showed a little hate for some mighty fine time pieces.

      Agree 1000% on the unimaginative blight of a white date background - too generic slapped on without any effort at synching with the dial color

    I have a Junghans Max Bill no-date. To me, putting a date complication or even a chronograph like they did with the Chronoscope completely misses the point of the Max Bill.

    I have about six automatic watches, all with dates, some with days too. It puts me off putting them on as I know I'll have to set the date and/or day so I end up wearing my wind-up with no day or date all the time!

    It all depends on how they incorporate the date into the design. There are watches where the date window is part of the design and doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb which is why I can’t stand cyclops over the date. It makes you focus on the date and takes away from the design.
    It also depends on the environment you are wearing the watch. If it’s a field watch and you only wear it during outdoor activities, I can see where a day/date complication isn’t needed. However, if you are wearing a watch to the office or, as an everyday wear piece, the date function is very useful. But again, it’s all how it’s incorporated into the design.

    VC overseas Chrono gen 2 is one of the exceptions to the rule. The big date windows are sexy. My daily has to have a date. So either the SD43 or the VC is my daily driver.

    I've never owned a watch that didn't have at least a date complication. However, in this video you make a compelling statement for the perfections of a bit more simplicity. All for the sake of much that is neglected in design and function.

    I think it's the ever-present and never-ending debate of art vs. function. And it's a great debate because you can really make a case for both. That's why for me, it's better to keep things well designated within a category. When you try and blur the lines too much (i.e. one watch for any occasion) you end up with something that maybe does a bunch of things marginally well, but does nothing great; it also kills the spirit of making something purely for one intention. With that said, I do believe dress watches should not have dates because you are wearing it more as an accessory and an art piece rather than a tool to be used strictly for time telling, although obviously it can do that. I also think your reason #5 speaks to this as well, since you are wearing a dress watch for a special occasion and you should be in the moment during that time. This is why you see dress watches without minute tracks or maybe even indices at all (like museum dials), because it's really not about telling the time, but simply admiring the beautiful thing on your wrist. The Blancpain Métiers d'Art collection is a perfect example of this.

    When you say that the date complicates and makes you study the dial to read the time and removing it makes the time visible at a glance easier, doesn't that also make it more Tooly in design/philosophy in a different way than having the date as well because it Kisi becomes an instrument that tells you the time and nothing else by removing all other noise/nonsense?

    I am lucky enough to own a few no date watches,which to me is a pleasure multiplier.A recent purchase was the Perpetual SC03 a real tour de force of symmetry and a very classical appearance.If i had one dislike of this watch it would be it's size.At forty millimeters it looks great where as at thirty eight millimeters it would be perfection.......

    I can never remember the date so need it. That said I do have a couple of no date watches that I love. I do like the aesthetic of plain dials too but it always seems to me strange how some watches are talked up because they are no date but are instead plastered with horrible text. Looking at you Rolex!

    I had a big fight with my watch master when I took my Seiko Fifty Five Fathoms and told him to change the dial with a Dagaz one, which had no hole for the day/date complication. He simply couldn't understand why I would give up such "important info". After he changed it, he looked at it and said "Mmm, yeaah, doesn't look that bad" :)
