Why did so many FRENCH people support PETAIN in 1940?

- In 1940, Marshal Pétain seized power in France and established the Vichy regime. Some French people wanted this change in response to the Nazi invasion. These supporters of Philippe Pétain fall into two categories: Marshalism and Petainism. I explain the differences and give you the arguments of each camp.

It's really bad that Marshal Foch died first while this demented egotistical character lived longer to exploit the mindless pacifism of his people.
France had 2.2m soldiers in 1939.Approx 50k died in the German in invasion. The BEF lost 70k. More Englishmen died defending France than Frenchmen. I believe the French people always admired Petain for this slight of hand in saving French lives. It's Also why De Gaulle hated the Brits to his death. Great narration BTW. Gunther chasing french bottoms made me laugh.
He also admits in the video that under the Vichy regime, French citizens got rights (from the Nazis) that few others in Nazi-ruled Europe enjoyed during the time.
The BEF lost nearly 70k, but that was the figure for total casualties which also included the number of soldiers left behind in France after Dunkirk.
