FCE - spinal injury in dog: physical therapy at home

  • I am not a veterinarian or an animal physical therapist. This video shows the exercises our vet recommended for Ripley, who had a t-13 FCE...check with your vet for what is best for your dog. Ripley had FCE on April 28. This video made august 14th. Ripley did not walk for two+ months, then started to show great improvement. The neurologist vet was surprised!
Early on, we would do this set of exercises 3-4 times a day, everyday. Now, since he is walking more, 2-3 times a day. Don't forget the stretching.

Ripley moved on to a better place today. Almost 12 years old and the last 4 dealing with his FCE. He loved to run and was dealt a crappy hand in life. Loved until the end and beyond. 🐶

Get a wheel chair. It brought my dog back to life. He can use it on walks and looks forward to it every day. Now he is so cocky again. His spirit is not broken anymore. He sniffs, walks, etc. a dog again. Inside the house I carry him wheel barrel style but outside his wheelchair is his chariot!

Doug, thank you so incredibly much for this video you made so many years ago. Our barely one-year-old English Mastiff had an embolism yesterday and was diagnosed today. You have given me so much hope AND practical action to take until we can get in touch with a veterinarian physical therapist (today is Friday). Thanks to you, and know Ripley lives on doing good and helping others.

Thank you for doing this video. My little min pin fell from a chair onto his neck last week and became completely paralyzed. The vet said that it was just badly sprained. He is still with the vet but I'm going to have to bring him home soon. After 7 days he can now move his neck so I'm staying positive and look forward to watching and working with him to have a full recovery. Your video is so very helpful thank you again! Best of luck to you and Ripley!

Thank you so much for making this video. My German Shepherd boy had a FCE on November 1, 2017. He's not walking yet. His left Front and Left Rear legs are paralyzed. He has gone from being flat out on his side to now being able to set up on the barrel of his chest with ease. As of the last two days he is now tolerating us slinging him with a twin bed quilt. We tried early on and he would have nothing to do with it. But now he's doing well with it, bearing weight on both front and rears, not a long time but bearing none the less. Enough to hold a stance. We are able to get him out on the deck and he does his business out there. Small victories. But you know it's encouraging to know the time line in which you experience victories with your dog. How is Ripley doing today? Thanks again for making this great video! Gotta keep the muscles going.

Hi Doug. Thanks for the posting this video. My dog Alice is about 2 months into having lost feeling in her rear legs. It happened very quicky. One day she had a slight limp and within 2-3 days she was completely paralyzed in both rear legs. The vet could find no sign of a spinal tumor or degenerative spinal disease. We believe she may have suffered some sort of trauma while at home by herself. Especially because she likes to play neighborhood watch and bark at everyone that walks by the house and jump on and off chairs and couches. We have been going to a animal chiropractor and after a few weeks Alice is starting to show signs of feeling in her upper thighs and tail, but nothing from the middle of the leg and down. I'm going to ask the doc if exercises like this might help her out. At this point I just want to see her walk again and get back to her normal playful self. Thanks again, Doug. Good luck, Ripley! Rooting for you, buddy!

My dog had the same thing in 3 days he went from wobbly to back legs barely working. It was a slipped disc and a CT scan confirmed it. Xray not so much. For us surgery was 95% chance and not doing it means high chance of it happening again after healing. So no more chairs couches or bed jumps. We don't know how it happened

Same thing with my Xena. Held right leg up on Friday and completely paralyzed in the rear by that Sunday. We are three weeks post FCE - at least that's what they are calling it. There is a facebook page also for this condition. She started to wag her tail a bit on her own this week and use bathroom normally outside. Hoping mobility is next to follow.

Did you start the exercises straight away or did you wait a bit for the medications to see what happened , I've been told to keep movement to a minimum for 7 to 10 days but I feel like some for of movement therapy is a must any advice would be great thanx

My dog was diagnosed with FCE on 5/10/23 and could stand up on her own a week later. She's walking for seconds at a time, wobbly and not too confident as of today. Her legs and paws are still inconsistent but physical therapist is optimistic. How was your dog doing 10 days later after diagnosis? I'm looking for hope that she's going to recover quickly.

I’ve been crying for a week straight ... my dog is showing signs but only in one leg he doesn’t seem to notice it at all , he will try to play, run, he gets excited and it’s giving me a heart attack.... I assume this happened when he was running or jumping during this week, vet told me it was a spinal stroke but he wanted me to get an mri ... turns out they want 4500$ for an mri ... I’m going to try this I hope this helps

My Collie cross had an FCE 2 weeks ago. How long did it take for Ripley to start walking (was it 2 months)? Also, did he just start walking on his own or did you have to work with him in a harness or wheel chair?
Thanks so much for giving us hope! Your assistance would be greatly appreciated

I don’t recall exactly but I think it was at least a month. He couldn’t even stand up and then one day, he was just standing up in his bed. He then started to (try) and walk.
