I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail.
    Yes I would,
    If I could,
    I surely would.
I'd rather be a hammer than a nail.
    Yes I would,
    If I only could,
    I surely would.
    CHORUS
    Away, I'd rather sail away
Like a swan that's here and gone
A man gets tied up to the ground
    He gives the world
    Its saddest sound,
    Its saddest sound.
I'd rather be a forest than a street.
    Yes I would.
    If I could,
    I surely woud.
I'd rather feel the earth beneath my feet,
    Yes I would.
    If I only could,
    I surely would.

I made my roommate cry. He'd from Peru. I just thought it was a nice song by Simon and Garfunkel. I played it one day, and he cried and told me about his family and how much that song is part of his heritage.

This is a very famous song called El Condor Pasa is a song from Peru by the Peruvian composer Daniel Alomía Robles, written in 1913 and based on traditional Andean music, specifically folk music from Peru.
Since then, it has been estimated that around the world, more than 4000 versions of the melody have been produced, along with 300 sets of lyrics. In 2004, Peru declared this song as part of the national cultural heritage. This song is now considered the second national anthem of Peru.

The music belongs to the Peruvian Zarzuela "El Condor Pasa", which was written by the Peruvians Daniel Alomia Robles and Julio de la Paz. Its premier was on December 19 of 1913. Later, Simon & Garfunkel, American musicians, adapted and added lyrics to it and made this musical piece very famous. The Condor Pasa is a protest because of the exploitation of the Indians in the Peruvian mines. They are asking for freedom represented by the flight of the condor. The sad part represents the feelings of the exploited Indians and the happy part is the representation of the freedom recovered at the end. Ironically was a protest of the Indians against American companies in Cerro de Pasco Peru.

Wow, thank you for this awesome goose chilling all over my body. Yes, it's sad that the world is getting smaller and smaller and lots of rapists (that exploit and damaged) the very earth that God gave to us. Man don't care. (I'm saying that we are losing all the important things and beauty of the flutterby's, ladybugs, praying mantis, and especially the honeybees. The exploitation of chemicals and global warming. They are essential for the pollen to every living thing and animal.

My dad bought a consil stereo cabinet with a built in recorder and recorded me singing, played it back to me and when I heard what I sounded like..... I to this day have never sang again. But listening to those recordings now brings a smile to all of our faces. Thank you for this song.

The background music came from mountains of Central America. It also has some Appalachian appeal. When Simon & Garfunkel added their melody and words to the music, it became a timeless masterpiece.

The saddest sound, in my mind, is found in another S and G song The sound of silence. The lyrics in that song i relate to how the people are being lead like sheep to the neon light on the subway wall.
