    A note about Gandalf... he's not just a typical fantasy "human wizard." He's actually an angelic being sent to guide the free peoples and aid them in their fight against Sauron (who was the chief lieutenant of Morgoth, essentially Middle Earth's equivalent of Satan), but he is commanded to limit the use of his power. His charge is to guide and encourage, not to win the war for them. That's why he only uses his full powers when he's directly fighting other beings like him (such as the Balrog).

    The thought of Haldir and his elven archers joining the battle when there is no hope to win, when they could just as easily have joined the rest of the elves, sailed into the west and lived forever. What a gesture!

    Amazing movie and perfect trilogy. I remember watching these in the theater. Good times. But the one-year wait between the parts was quite something. Watched them in special midnight screenings. Great crowd. The battle of Helms Deep here was so epic...and then with Gandalf coming to help. Beautifully shot and as always with an amazing musical score. Looking forward to your reactions to the third part.

      So, the first movie in the theatre was an absolute nightmare for me. Let me explain... it was on the largest movie screen in the entire world located in Wichita KS at the time. But, my group ended up in the front row... so close to the screen that we had to turn our heads to see either side of the screen.
      Cue the opening battle scene with Elrond, Isildur and Sauron... whiplash. The whole thing was whiplash inducing. My neck hurt for a week after that show.

      @@jamestaylor3805 I feel you, my ex took me to the movie as a "surprise", while I loved it, she complained the entire time about how long it was, how she didn't like fantasies etc..., even later when talking to friends she'd bring up how much of a sacrifice it was for her to endure it, what a martyr she was. Just one of the reasons she's an ex.

    The Battle of Helm's Deep is still the gold standard for battle scenes to this day. Especially since it takes place at night, but you can still _see_ what's going on, something that modern directors seem to have forgotten how to do.

    Elrond has particular reason to be concerned what Arwen is doing, since his own brother Elros chose a mortal life over immortality. Up until that point, he would never have expected to see his brother grow old and die. Elros was the first king of Númenor, distant ancestor of Isildur, and therefore also of Aragorn. And now he is facing the prospect of his daughter also dying.

    Sam's line "By all rights we shouldn't be here... but we are." is a reference to the fact Faramir doesn't take Frodo, Sam and Gollum to Osgiliath in the book but lets them go after he discovers that Frodo have The Ring (which Sam accidently blurts out after getting a bit of wine and got too comfortable) and Gollum is captured like in the movie (though not tortured but just being interrogated by Faramir). This was added to give Faramir some character arc as in the book he gives up on The Ring too easily saying "I wouldn't have taken it if it was lying by the wayside" and to give Frodo and Sam another climax because of the real one (which hints to "Her" that Gollum refers to) would have cancelled out the climax of Helm's Deep plus even if it is in The Two Towers book, it does happen during the events of The Return of the King according to Tolkien's timeline.

  • @WJS774
    @WJS774 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    "In the book": The Ents do take forever to decide to act, and have been debating taking action since before the Hobbits even arrived. But ultimately they do decide to join the war, they don't refuse. As usual though, minor characters are not allowed their own agency, and it has to be a main character who _tricks_ Treebeard into joining the war, making him look like a very poor "shepherd of the trees" if he hasn't noticed that Saruman has cut down half his forest.

    • @ucheehQ
      @ucheehQ 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      As a counterpoint to that, if Merry and Pippin didn't have more of a role in the Ents' decision to join the war, they did pretty much nothing of import during this entire movie.
      All they did was get carried around, first by the Uruk-hai, and then by Treebeard. They're still main characters in the trilogy and narratively they should have something to add to the move the plot forward.

    • @WJS774
      @WJS774 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ucheehQ Sure, if you like formulaic Hollywood bullshit.

    • @ucheehQ
      @ucheehQ 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@WJS774 Or if you know anything about storytelling and narrative. Having two of your main characters do literally nothing but be dragged along for one third of your story without them taking any action to drive the plot or change a course somewhere is bad writing, not just in Hollywood slop, but literature as well. The movies aren't perfect, and they've definitely made some questionable and even bad decisions (looking at Faramir and especially Denethor here...) but having the two hobbits actually do something wasn't one of them.

  • @WJS774
    @WJS774 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    In the book Faramir didn't try to take the Ring, he was afraid to even _look_ at it after Sam accidentally let slip that they had it. In the film you have to ask if he isn't going to let Frodo go, why on earth does he _not_ take the Ring from Frodo? Why on earth does he let him keep it, and send Frodo to Gondor still _with_ the Ring instead of taking the Ring himself? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Also... he didn't just let him keep the Ring, he let him keep his sword too? WTF?

    Gondor couldn't help Rohan even if THéoden did send out riders, they were busy defending their own lands against attacks from Mordor. Like Madril, Faramir's second in command said "We must look on to our own boarders", so they don't have enough men to spare. They were attacked at two fronts, Cair Andross near the boarder to Rohan and Osgiliath.

    On the true depth of these books and movies...
    Brego the horse was looking in the river for his Fallen Prince but found the Wounded King, the man who let him free to search for the lost prince.
    Had Aragorn not freed Brego...
    Had the Rhohirrim put the mad horse down as they intended...
    Had Rohan's prince not died...
    There are so many seemingly unconnected chains of events, and had any otherwise insignificant item in these chains been missed the war would have been lost, even if it seemed like a princely death was bad at the time...

    • @jamestaylor3805

      Had Saruman not turned and betrayed the others his consel would have ever been to use caution and to avoid risks with any plans on how to move/deal with the ring, and the war would have been lost.

    Two Towers is not my favorite out of the three but it still features my favorite battle sequence, Helm's Deep, the build but to it is phenomenal. It was the biggest medieval battle scene after Ivanhoe's battle of Torquinstone in the late 50s ! (you should enjoy those older movies soundtracks by Miklos Rozsa !
    My favorite is the first one, followed by the third movie, Two Towers comes last but not far behind. But I usually take the three movies as a whole, as it was intended.

    Peter Jackson generally avoided such references because he didn't want to introduce notions that are unfamiliar to those who know nothing about the lore.
