3/4 ton Suburban - Another Project Begins...

  • So this barge landed on the auction block, and somehow it followed me home... Bought it sight unseen. The next to the last year of the square body style, these are definitely a cool truck. This one caught my eye because of the 3/4 ton and 4 wheel drive. We quickly got a crash course in working on these older GM's, and even though a lot of parts interchange over the years, there's still a lot that did change. As with any vehicle that's this old and been off the road for a while, there were a lot of details and small stuff to fix to bring it back into service.
In this installment we basically just focus on getting it roadworthy again, and planning out some future modifications. It definitely needs a manual transmission swap! Came with a TBI 350, TH400 transmission, and a 241 transfer case. Semi float 14b rear - 10b front axle.

My dad had a half ton busurban same gen and color as this one. I was 16 and got to drive it. Took out a few mailboxes around the circle from the house, raced and gapped some of the self proclaimed "fast" cars (in 4 low!), and so much more. I just realized that was 30 years ago!

Awesome vidya fella! Everything you replaced and fixed is just normal high mileage TBI stuff. I've only seen one of those old GM engine computers ever take a dump out of probably the 100's I've touched. Hell I took one out of a 2.8 MPI powered 86 firebird and put it into a 1990 350 tbi chevy truck just to see... and well it ran. Batch fire is batch fire no matter how many injectors hahah

Man that’s a good idea on using zip ties on holding that diaphragm for the fuel pressure regulator! I pinched mine when I rebuilt it on my 95 2500. I had my buddy watching while I tried to start it. It sprayed fuel onto the coil of all places and caught fire. Luckily I had a small fire extinguisher in the truck tool box and another in the shop. It took both to extinguish the fire. Had to replace the injector pig tails, coil, and a few other things. I bought a replacement fuel regulator pre-assembled after that 😂

    • @toocheaptosmoke

'90 V1500 barn door was my first truck. Got it at 273,000 miles, it was almost trouble free for the two years I daily drove it. Got rear ended twice and the second time was a little too much. She's out to pasture now waiting on a donor body but still mechanically sound. Use it to help with yard work on occasion.

I'm halfway threw the vid up to the headers. Unless your going to invest in coating them, I'd be looking for some good factory ex manifolds. After about three months of heat cycling they will warp and leak. Again and again and again...... the burb is heavy and that old motor is never going to run at the rpm where the headers will be beneficial. Lessons I've learned. Enjoying your content.
