    T-Rex was the moment that made me realize I really shouldn't blame teams that bend the rules as much as possible to get a fast race car. When you legit build the fastest car possible BY THE BOOK and it STILL gets banned what are you supposed to do then? You follow the rules and STILL get banned so to Hell with the rules.

      Just goes to show in all of motorsport that vague rules lead to grey areas which leads to innovation..which then leads to bans when that innovation is too outside the box for the governing organization lol

      I loved how they banned this T-Rex or trying to build better cars than today’s stupidity equal racing cars that all crowded in bunched together and it was boring! I wished NASCAR just leave it to the owners and drivers control not NASCAR became fat purses and tv deals and big corporations and became greedy and destroyed southern only love sport and taken away from them. Now, it has become like the NFL playoffs style and it’s not working! Racing is totaling different from football and NBA playoff games. But NASCAR can’t seem to understand because they have become blindsided by money and don’t care about the sport and its fans base anymore!

    OH BOY!!! T REX!!! And T. Rex was not named soley for the Tyrannosaurus Rex and Jurassic Park on the car like most people assume and think they know. The car was actually named after the chassis designer, Rex Stump. So, since the car was so dominant in the testing session for the Winston, they knew that had something special. So, with the T. Rex on the car, and the man's name that designed it was named Rex... They gave it the name, T. REX! A freaking incredible car. But the following year in 1998, Ray Evernham, Jeff Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports brought a car that was even faster than T. Rex. But, there werea things they learned from T. Rex that NASCAR didn't outlaw and put on the "DON'T BRING BACK EVER" list. Like running a lot bigger sway bars in the front and the rear of the car, bigger than anyone had ever run before that. And he dominated The Winston that year, but bc of 2 extra caution laps at the end of the race bc Jeff jumped the green flag, so NASCAR threw the caution to redo the start, and Jeff run out of gas going into turn 1.
    Plus, I understand that the 24 car was fast... But he didn't dominate the 97 Winston. When u hear people talk about it, they make it seem like he lead from flag to flag, and over a second a lap faster and nobody could stay with him. But he only led 9 laps. But, he was faster once he got out front, but that car struggled badly in traffic.

    Being born in '93 i never saw this full race. But Nascar had zero right to ban the T-Rex chassis after just one race in which Jeff only led 10 laps. Why didn't they ban Bobby Labonte's, Jarret's, and Earnhardt's cars too while they were at it. France's and making stupid decisions, classic.

    • @ggsimmonds1
      @ggsimmonds1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you watch the full race yet? In both of the first two stages Jeff started at the rear and blitzed into 3rd. The one stage he didn't start at the rear he ran away from the field crazy quick. It may have been a bad move to ban the chassis, but lets not be mistaken and think those other 3 cars were remotely close to its level

    Three things:
    1.) Back when double-file restarts were a rare thing.
    2.) This format would be perfect if they took the average finish from the first two segments. Kind of BS that you could just intentionally finish last in the first segment, get a huge lead in the second segment by starting up front, and then get to start up front for the final segment.
    3.) I have always heard about how insanely dominant Gordon's T-Rex car was, but it wasn't THAT bad. He seemed to pretty clearly have the best car but it wasn't blatantly obvious. Didn't even lead a lap until the final 10-lap segment and he wasn't restarting around the other fastest cars of the night because the drivers who purposely dropped to the back in segment 1 were still leading.

      @OLd_One-eyeguy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kyle Wagoner #3 point, you are correct about laps led. Consider this, if you as he driver of Trex know that you have the field covered and can pass cars at will.... why would you show that to your opponents on segments 1&2 while the have an opportunity to make a pit stop and make their car better.

    • @ak102986
      @ak102986 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think anything was illegal. I think it was just right up to the line and ahead of the rules i.e. it did things that weren't against the rules because they were no rules on the book that was against what they was doing. But like Petty and Elliott before, Nascar can't have one car so dominant that no one else can touch them.

      The car itself wasn't illegal at all. Everything was 100% to the rule. The problem is that the car had the potential to be so dominant that it likely would've forced every other car to change to be like Gordon's in order to be competitive (which would've Coste a bunch of money and would've made many races boring as a result, since Gordon could've and likely would've won almost every race the car ran at). Rather than force everyone else to change, they told Gordon's team to go back to what everyone else was running, essentially changing the rule book so they couldn't run the car again. Of course, Gordon's team likely went and did the same thing multiple times over the next few years, building cars that were 100% legal but stretched every rule (I know they ran the T-rex chassis at one of the Daytona races later in 1997, but they changed everything they needed to before running it and it finished 4th).

    • @TheTISEOMan
      @TheTISEOMan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ak102986 Much of it is due to lightening the unsprung weight. They lightened areas that they could and used Titanium for that process. This was an EXPENSIVE car to build. Another example is aero. Lowering the chassis rails a bit created an air block similar to Gurney's BLAT car and 80's formula 1 did and basically made the car have downforce basically expand across the whole underbody of the car.
      If you wanna know just how powerful underbody design can be, look up the "Delta wing" you can see it as a successor to the BLAT where essentially there was no wing, just a huge underbody and a big diffuser.

    How bout that racing. Multiple cars going back and fourth. Multiple cars coming from the back to the front back the back and to the front again. They could run 2 3 wide and not wreck. Cars were bouncing around and once the leader got passed the 2nd place car would pass the leader back and fourth. You don't see that in today's nascar. Seems once a car is out front it'll stay out front.
