  • Recently found out that my wife's first and only Superman was Henry Cavill in Man of Steel. Time to rectify this error and take her through the joy of the classic Christopher Reeve Superman that made us all believe a man could fly.

"Can you read my mind" (from the first time Superman and Lois fly and you called "cheese") is actually a song, but Margot kidder (Lois) couldn't sing, so it became a poem, if you want to hear the original song, sung by Maureen McGovern, you can find it on YT. Christopher Reeve RIP will be THE Superman forever, and not just onscreen, after his accident, he worked relentlessly for spine injuries. And this is my favorite suit.

My earliest memories of this film was my father taking me to the theater on a Saturday afternoon when I was 5 years old. Christopher Reeve is my childhood Superman, so I'm very partial to his portrayal. I also really enjoyed Superman Returns and Man of Steel.

Superman Returns I thought was a great performance around a mediocre story. But even then I found the story compelling.
I understand why a lot of purists didn’t like Man of Steel. But you’re a great example of someone who has fond nostalgia and holds onto Reeve as your Superman and can still appreciate MoS. I thought MoS bridged the gap of 40 years and successfully propelled Superman into a modern dogma and aesthetic. The Superman of 1970s and 80s just would not work today.
I appreciate you dropping by 🙏

Yes, the John Williams score is very iconic. However, Jerry Goldsmith was originally going to score the movie. That Donner/Goldsmith winning combo(Goldsmith winning the Oscar for best original score for the awesome "The Omen"). So, when Goldsmith scored "Supergirl" perhaps we got a taste of what his score would've been for "Superman".

Think of it this way: Superman isn’t “spinning the Earth backwards”. He’s traveling faster than light and time is reversing. The reversal of time is illustrated for Superman and the audience by the Earth rotating backwards. Superman even uses that events on Earth as a reference point (ignoring that someone traveling faster than light wouldn’t be able to see their surroundings).

Please give Shelly Duvall (actress from The Shining) a bit of a break. It’s well documented that Stanley Kubrick mentally tortured her during production in order to elicit the mentally worn down stressed and panicked performance for the film. She never fully recovered from the experience.
“Actress Shelley Duvall did not get along with Kubrick, frequently arguing with him on set about lines in the script, her acting techniques and numerous other things. Duvall eventually became so overwhelmed by the stress of her role that she became physically ill for months. At one point, she was under so much stress that her hair began to fall out.”
“Kubrick antagonized his actors, and Kubrick and Duvall argued frequently. Kubrick intentionally isolated Duvall, and went through exhausting shoots, such as the baseball bat scene, which she had performed 127 times. Afterwards, Duvall presented Kubrick with clumps of hair that had fallen out due to the extreme stress of filming.”
    -from Wikipedia.

    • @PatrickStewart316
      @PatrickStewart316  ปีที่แล้ว +1

First. Let me say that Shelly Duvall is an accomplished actress and very talented. Second, I can appreciate what she went through filming that movie. Third, all of our off hand comments are tongue in cheek. We are every bit irreverent on this channel and have always been so.
And although I appreciate what Shelly went through filming the shining, I don’t feel bad about it in the least and don’t feel we need to give her a break. My complaint isn’t with her, but rather Kubrick’s portrayal of that specific character. He got what he wanted out of her. I am well acquainted with what transpired on that set. However, is that not what she got paid for. I love Ahmed Best as a person and actor. And he portrayed Jar Jar Binks exactly as George Lucas wanted. Doesn’t mean we aren’t going to make fun of the character.
Pay me millions and I would let Kubrick verbally abuse me to play a role in a movie. Nobody forced it on her. Do I think Kubrick was despicable? You bet. I have never liked him or his movies. I think of him much like Marlon Brando… overrated diva who thinks to highly of himself and his own genius.
End of the day I no more feel sorry for an actor dealing with a butthole director than I do when an NFL player gets hit hard in a football game. They are getting paid millions to play a role or a game for entertainment. I don’t see people lining up to defend people like me and my fellow service members with PTSD and saying, do you know how many times they were isolated and berated during training for years. Oh, and they got paid 28k a year. Just saying. …. “It’s well documented” what we go through and when one of us can’t handle the pressure we are told it’s what we volunteered for and to suck it up.
Do I appreciate Duvall. You betcha. But the flailing armed pitiful exhausted character she portrayed is exactly what Kubrick was going for. We know because that’s what he chose to put on screen. It worked. But I will continue to make fun of the flailing arms. Just like we make fun of Jennifer Lawrence’s cry face. Doesn’t mean she sucked as Katniss. She rocked it. But come on. It isn’t that serious.
I am an old bald headed fat guy. Make fun of myself all the time. If we can’t laugh at ourselves it’s a miserable life.

Hey there! So, I finally have a chance to watch this. Very nice. However, (and I know I said this in your Superman III watch), I finally it irksome that you keep calling this the original Superman on the big screen. George Reeves had a big screen film "Superman vs the Mole Men" in 1951, and before that Kirk Alyn had two Superman serials (in 1948 and 1950) complete with the origin story! Speaking of which, I didn't want to belabour this, but you might enjoy knowing that your friend is only partly right. You see, his description of the Superman comics is post-Crisis (there was a MAJOR reboot of Superman and other DC comics around 1985 (which is when I initially stopped reading them by the way)). These movies came out before that, so some of Supes strange powers actually WERE in the comics only with other "cheesy" stuff (like the various colours of Kryptonite that did various things) If you want to know about this, (which actually may interest you), then have a look at my vids.

It was invented by a writer who wanted something to weaken Superman. Why not a chunk of Krypton? It existed for decades as merely a plot device. More contemporary writers provide an explanation that involves a radiation that Kal-El is susceptible to.
That’s what I mean by comic book logic. It’s fine to just accept that kryptonite not only weakens but also can kill Superman, because comic books. There may be another commenter that may have more in-depth knowledge that can fill in any contemporary, canon, details.

You don’t get to determine my belief system by your arbitrary rules. If I happen to like Henry Cavil’s take on Superman it does NOT mean I don’t like the character. It’s a completely different take on the character. Christopher Reeve will always be my Superman. I broke my arm believing I could be like him.
But even Superman 2 portrays two different supermen. Which do you adhere to. Donner cut version or theatrical. I can disagree on your take. But for me to state you hate the character based on your opinions of a different character is the height of arrogance and hubris.
Superman is make believe. None of these actors are actually Superman. You do know that right. And none of these actors understands Superman by anything different than what they were directed to be.
I have yet to see anyone capture on screen all the character that is Superman. Because what he means to me will always be different than what he means to you. We will never perceive him the same way. As a child I needed a flawless superhero whose only weakness was one he couldn’t help and a reaction to kryptonite. The older I get I prefer my heroes to have flaws. Moral quandaries and dilemmas of conscience.
My favorite scene of all time with Superman will always be him in the scrap yard struggling with himself. That scene spoke to me and still does to this day. Superman 3 may not have objectively been the best film but I loved it.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the better portrayal, but I have no idea why you would call him a "crackhead." Also, I'm assuming you're referring to when he killed Zod, let's not forget that Superman crushed the bones of Zod's hand into a powder, then threw him into arctic water, killing him. The remaining kryptonians also met their demise in the arctic water. I know that the Donner cut changes that, but it's irrelevant. In my opinion, no one has been able to play both Superman and Clark Kent like Christopher Reeve. However, I like Cavill, and felt that Zod's death was necessary. Knowing the comics, after Superman was killed by Doomsday and came back, I know that Zod eventually will too. I still am perplexed over the crackhead jibe at Henry Cavill. That insult is usually reserved for skinny people that look rough and down in the dumps. I like Man of Steel, placing it 3rd, after Superman 1 and 2, but it wasn't without it's issues. My biggest complaint with the film is that Lois was able to find him so easily and the military, even after a spaceship went to Smallville, couldn't figure it out. Not only that, but Lois yells out Clark's name when an officer is there. I also hate the destruction that went on in metropolis, but Superman was young and learning, so hopefully he wouldn't allow that to happen again. I'm also on the fence with Jonathan's death, but I liked Kevin Costner's portrayal for the rest of the movie. Superman rescuing Lois in the helicopter is still the greatest introduction to a superhero of any film, IMO. However, in Man of Steel when Superman learns how to fly, they do a great job of showing that he could only jump at 1st, just like in the comics. Then they show him breaking gravity, which I thought Cavill emoted very well, but he hadn't completely grasped how to fly yet, and crashes into a mountain. The crash would make a geodesist pissed, because the mountain lost a considerable amount of its elevation, and Superman ended up creating a crater in the earth at the base. After that, when he finally flew, they showed it's reaction in clouds breaking and water churning, a nice touch. They also show his speed by him going from the arctic to Africa in seconds, then into space. The part with him flying upside down in space and "burning" up on re-entry was also another great touch, as this showed his resilience. The score during this scene by Hans Zimmer was excellent, though not as good as Williams. I grew up reading comics, DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, CHAOS!, and I don't think they massacred Superman's character. I just wish Cavill could have done a better job at portraying Clark, that might have been Snyder's fault.

@@PatrickStewart316 sorry to rant again, but I only read the first part of your response to the first comment. So I repeated the Superman 2 deaths, although that depends on the cut. Anyways, I actually like Superman 3, though not my favorite, it had many good moments. The scrap yard scene is is in my top favorite scenes in the original 4 Superman films. The scrap yard is the best scene with Reeve in terms of its dynamic and his acting IMO.
