Good question! the - - background is ionic CSS Custom Properties that can be found in the ionic official documentations mostly applied for ionic UI components which starts with ion like ion-toolbar and the background is the normal CSS property.

Quick question, for a full fledged app, would you put all paddings etc in a style object, so if you ever have uniform padding, you wouldn't need to change the padding of every single object? I don't mind hardcoding, but it might get difficult in future development right?

This tutorial is still very helpful 3 years later. I would add that handling light and dark mode is not addressed.
