Childhood memories are always bittersweet. You can never experience the world like that again. My childhood best friend and I played this together. Sadly, we completely lost touch over time and those memories are the most bittersweet Trying to play this as an adult is mind numbingly boring. But as a kid my best friend and I played this thing for hours on end. It was one of the few games I could run on our computer. The limitations were filled in by imagination. We searched every corner for little secrets. Discovering LEGO Radio above the information center or finding the hidden cave with the pirate was amazing back then. I knew every song from the jukebox by heart.

That would actually be interesting. Making the sky like a Green Screen green. That way, you could make it look like some kid's bedroom, or the basement from The Lego Movie.
I know this video is from 2022, but I just wanted to say that this is great! I sat through all 8 hours of this, as this game is one of my special interests, and you did such a good job with everything. This is by far the most complete playthrough of this game I've seen, and all the effort that went into this is highly appreciated, plus the subtitles were a great addition! I'm not a native english speaker, so they were super helpful
I have a lot of love for this game. Very nostalgic. Used to spend hours on the game when I was a kid. Lego games have come a long way since, but this was pretty ground breaking. That soundtrack still hits hard. I wonder how much wasn't used due to limitations at the time. I played this on a Packard Bell home computer with a beastly 5mb of RAM, and that couldn't play the game smoothly xD. I never played the 2nd Lego Island game, which filled out the island a bit more - but some say it lost the soul of the original. Great playthough - I'm amazed you got to 8 hours, very thorough :D. There was a bug / feature I remember where if you rocket down the road and exit the vehicle while it's still moving - it would take off around the island without you.
Lorin Nelson, the lead musician for this game, released a bunch of unused music several years ago. Along with some stuff from other musicians there's over 20 unused tracks known, plus several early/unfinished versions of final tracks. There was definitely way more than just this, but a lot got lost when Lorin's houseboat sank a long time ago... I love that runaway vehicle bug. I had a bunch of bugs like that showcased in some videos on my old channel, I should try recreating all that in better quality
Great video, I like that you took a lot of time for just messing around on the island (surely the thing we all spent the most time doing as kids) rather than just blasting through every mission and ending it there
My computer in 2000 / 2001 was so janky, I couldn't even run this right on a consistent basis. Pepper's intro movie at 8:43 reminded me of *trying* to watch it once, and I just got the intro music before repeating over and over for maybe a minute before the game crashed. Click the timestamp repeatedly and there you have it...

the skeleton of Captain Click the pirate is behind the door and mockingly gives you gameplay hints if you click it. there was supposed to be a lot more in there that would relate to the game's planned sequel, Beneath the Phanta Sea/Lego Sea Challenge, but it was cut due to them running out of time, and also that sequel never happened because Mindscape fired all the game's developers the day it released so they wouldn't have to pay them. great company

Nick shows a weird bigger model of himself to the right; that must be a glitch You aren't automatically classified as a Lego Character by clicking the Character's icon, you actually have to Click and Drag as promoted The Racecar, Jetski, Dune Buggy and Helicopter Builds don't automatically quit and finish when you place the last brick, you actually have to click the Triangle itself to confirm as promoted As far as I can remember; the character you play as affects how you interact with certain plants, buildings and characters: Pepper: Changes Plants to Trees, Palm Trees and Street Lights along with changing hats of any character clicked Mama: Changes the SFX of any Plant/Tree/Palm Tree/Street Light and character you click Papa: Changes the Animation of any Plant/Tree/Palm Tree/Street Light and character you click Nick: Changes the Colour of any Plant/Tree/Palm Tree/Street Light and character part you click to Red, Yellow, Green, blue, Black or White(Torso, Hands and Face are unaffected) Laura: Changes the mood of any character you click(Plant/Tree/Palm Tree/Street Light are unaffected)

I can try, I've been planning to do that for at least Rock Raiders, maybe other Lego games too. What have you done to install it, and what happened when you do? For me I just inserted the disk (or ISO), ran install.exe (not setup.exe, which is 16-bit and won't run on 64-bit), and the copied the Lego\Scripts folder and merged it with the installed copy so I could run it without the disk.
@@xXD4rkxR4v3nXx apparently a lot of copies have 16 bit installers, I didn't know sorry. There are alternate installers out there, I don't know how they work but here's one: github.com/le717/Island-Alternate-Installer A more complex manual solution is to install the English one, then manually copy the contents of Spanish Data\Disk into the install directory, as well as the Lego folder on the CD, overwriting all of the English files

it takes you to the registration screen, and if you registered the game (something a lot of pc game companies back then encouraged, not sure what it actually did) you'd get a map of Lego Island you could print out. The registration no longer works (there's some video you can find of some guys trying that in a stream) but you can just open the registration program's exe in 7zip or something and extract the bmp files for the map.
I wonder if its possible to swap the 1.1 voice files with those from version 1.0. Also, there was an uncut version of the bad ending which was never used in the final version, as the developers thought it was morbid for a game targeted towards kids. A higher quality version of the longer version was recently found, and one could put in the transition effect used in the released bad ending on top of the beta bad ending.

I know mattkc made a tool for replacing music and was working on a new SI tool for his decompilation but idk how that's going. I'd like to try replacing the video files whenever that's fully possible

that i don't know for sure but i would guess no, the 1.0 version is sorta rare and as far as I know all the initial versions were the big box ones that came with an infomaniac figure, so I'd guess they're all big box
anyone can check out any part of it they want, or grab a clip from it for a video if they need it. archival and reference are the main point of my longplays, especially since a lot of these older games are harder to run on computers these days.
@@koledone which part? this is an older version of the game but it only has a few differences from the final version, the sky is pretty much the same as far as i know.

I was trying to change it back to blueish for the winning Brickster chase and it turned out a little too green, but I went with it since it was different enough from the blue i first used with Pepper. I tried to have a different sky for everyone since that's a part of the gsme people don't show off much.
I use dgvoodoo and MattKC's Lego Island Rebuilder. It otherwise is running on Windows 10 but both of those help a lot with compatibility issues - the latter especially fixes the horrible turn speeds. You can get it running in non-direct3d modes in a virtual machine fairly easily though, and if you want direct3d you can set up an emulator in PCem - I'm not too familiar with it but it's very versatile for emulating a lot of old computer models (i can try to send the bioses for it if needed)
I played this on Windows 10! It runs fine for me, it just needs d3drm and dgvoodoo, which I guess can be a little complicated if you dont know how to set it up, but it works! I also recommend mattkc's Lego Island Rebuilder, which can add a lot of improvements, especially with the janky turning.

I'd like to make videos for all of the (old) Lego games eventually. Loco I'd probably want to do multiplayer stuff with, so that might take a bit of planning.
@funnyguy3D there's two options on the main menu, one for singleplayer and one for hosting or joining a server. the old global servers have been dead for 20 years and it's otherwise LAN only but that can be fixed with stuff like hamachi. just need to find enough people willing to screw around for a couple hours.

i tried to. i was copying lines from the lego island script book that bricks to bytes site published a while back since some lines are hard to understand. it was too much work though. i wish i could ask for help but for some reason youtube removed the caption contribution stuff a while back even though it made everyone angry. i keep saying i'll finish it at some point but i never get around to it. sorry if i've let anyone down who needs captions.
i think its more accurate to say roblox is (or was in the old days) based on the lego aesthetic. in fact im pretty sure i remember something about them making sure their figures didn't look too much like minifigures. but roblox now seems completely alien from the roblox i played in 2010 and all i hear about it now is how horrible it is so idk
@@Sockeye1 I don't think it was meant to be played in 30 minutes, it's more likely it was meant for kids to play around in for a long while and mess around with minigames and customization and seeing all the wacky interactions, and that's what I was trying to emulate here.

Hey, thanks a ton for posting such a memorable game from my childhood. I've tried to install it using the wiki, but I can't seem to do it correctly.

I can try, I've been planning to do that for at least Rock Raiders, maybe other Lego games too. What have you done to install it, and what happened when you do? For me I just inserted the disk (or ISO), ran install.exe (not setup.exe, which is 16-bit and won't run on 64-bit), and the copied the Lego\Scripts folder and merged it with the installed copy so I could run it without the disk.
@@Ringtail I tried to download the v1.1 spanish ver and when i try to run install.exe it says "this app cant run on your pc" error

There are alternate installers out there, I don't know how they work but here's one: github.com/le717/Island-Alternate-Installer
A more complex manual solution is to install the English one, then manually copy the contents of Spanish Data\Disk into the install directory, as well as the Lego folder on the CD, overwriting all of the English files

it takes you to the registration screen, and if you registered the game (something a lot of pc game companies back then encouraged, not sure what it actually did) you'd get a map of Lego Island you could print out. The registration no longer works (there's some video you can find of some guys trying that in a stream) but you can just open the registration program's exe in 7zip or something and extract the bmp files for the map.

I wonder if its possible to swap the 1.1 voice files with those from version 1.0.
Also, there was an uncut version of the bad ending which was never used in the final version, as the developers thought it was morbid for a game targeted towards kids. A higher quality version of the longer version was recently found, and one could put in the transition effect used in the released bad ending on top of the beta bad ending.

that i don't know for sure but i would guess no, the 1.0 version is sorta rare and as far as I know all the initial versions were the big box ones that came with an infomaniac figure, so I'd guess they're all big box

anyone can check out any part of it they want, or grab a clip from it for a video if they need it. archival and reference are the main point of my longplays, especially since a lot of these older games are harder to run on computers these days.

I was trying to change it back to blueish for the winning Brickster chase and it turned out a little too green, but I went with it since it was different enough from the blue i first used with Pepper. I tried to have a different sky for everyone since that's a part of the gsme people don't show off much.

I’m really curious, what emulation did you use to run it? It sounds like you can get old school windows emulators on a pc, is this true?
I use dgvoodoo and MattKC's Lego Island Rebuilder. It otherwise is running on Windows 10 but both of those help a lot with compatibility issues - the latter especially fixes the horrible turn speeds.
You can get it running in non-direct3d modes in a virtual machine fairly easily though, and if you want direct3d you can set up an emulator in PCem - I'm not too familiar with it but it's very versatile for emulating a lot of old computer models (i can try to send the bioses for it if needed)

I played this on Windows 10! It runs fine for me, it just needs d3drm and dgvoodoo, which I guess can be a little complicated if you dont know how to set it up, but it works! I also recommend mattkc's Lego Island Rebuilder, which can add a lot of improvements, especially with the janky turning.
It's not a true 100% without the installation 😂😂
I don't usually include the installers but if they're unique enough looking (and sometimes also sounding) like this one i will

@funnyguy3D there's two options on the main menu, one for singleplayer and one for hosting or joining a server. the old global servers have been dead for 20 years and it's otherwise LAN only but that can be fixed with stuff like hamachi. just need to find enough people willing to screw around for a couple hours.

How did you manage to write all the captions?
slowly and one line at a time while checking the original script document to make sure I was getting it right and also making sure the timing was exact. Which is why I got exhausted and never finished lol.

i tried to. i was copying lines from the lego island script book that bricks to bytes site published a while back since some lines are hard to understand. it was too much work though. i wish i could ask for help but for some reason youtube removed the caption contribution stuff a while back even though it made everyone angry. i keep saying i'll finish it at some point but i never get around to it. sorry if i've let anyone down who needs captions.

i think its more accurate to say roblox is (or was in the old days) based on the lego aesthetic. in fact im pretty sure i remember something about them making sure their figures didn't look too much like minifigures. but roblox now seems completely alien from the roblox i played in 2010 and all i hear about it now is how horrible it is so idk

@@Sockeye1 I don't think it was meant to be played in 30 minutes, it's more likely it was meant for kids to play around in for a long while and mess around with minigames and customization and seeing all the wacky interactions, and that's what I was trying to emulate here.
