Insane work. I can't imagine how much time and effort you put into this transcription considering the fact that Brad is not like a typical bebop player.
I first heard this recording not long after I started studying jazz over a decade ago... I come back to it every few years, thinking I’ve learned a thing or two and that maybe this won’t shock me as much as it did when I first heard it. I’m always wrong. Nice job with the transcription!
this is an amazing solo by Brad Mehldau. The way he takes his time building a dialog and then swings like mad!!!! He akes it and doesn't stop, ON FIRE!!! Thank you for doing the transcription I can't tell you how many times I've listened to this and am learning from the transcription. Thanks for all your hard work Tom. Peace
Amazing transcription, thank you so much! This is an utterly baffling solo. The deliberate pacing and control are balanced with so many wonderful surprises and a feeling of "discovery" throughout the course of the solo.
Bryant Miano Wellllll yeaaaaahhh, but that’s not a useful comparison first of all because most metronomes stop at 208 so you’d set it to the half note, not the quarter note, but more to the point it’s not a useful comparison anyway because there’s plenty of jazz tunes at this speed (most of oscar Peterson and like all of phineas newborne, for example). So all you’re saying is this tune is similar to a lot of other ones. So let’s go with Half Note = 156. Or hell, if we assume he’s feeling this in 4/8, then in 4/4 the quarter note actually WOULD be 156. So, you know, whatever. Lol. Enjoy the music, I think is the moral of the story. It’s good shit.
I listen to this about once a week, after reading the News. The creative SPIRIT of mankind won't be subdued by tyrants after all. It's a force bigger than all the Evil. Extremely uplifting MUSIC.
Certain parts of this remind me of Brubeck, where he got way out on the rhythmic sense (4:56), while the drummer kept the train on the tracks; then everybody gets back together as the station comes into view. Extremely adventuresome! Meldhau has a kind of a weird rubato in the middle of a swinging monster. This is FREEWHEELLIN'
WTF, most impressive Brad Mehldau Solo I ever heard 😮 Not sure if it's only thanks to the transcription. But I rather think that someone thought this had to be transcribed because it's so incredible 👏 Thanks for sharing the transcription!
You deserve a medal for this. Absolutely incredible transcription of a genius solo. What's your analysis of his scale/chord usage over these changes? I noticed he was using that flat 9th a lot.
Sorry, meant the #9. Seems like he's using the Bb7#9 as a kind of pedal throughout the A section, giving the whole thing a very bluesy sound. In fact he finishes the whole solo on an Ab - the b7 of Bb.
@@bigmoish9363 are you the same person amending your own comment on a different account 3 years later?? and are you gonna reply to me ANOTHER 3 years later? and will it be with yet another new account? inquiring minds must know
Great job - that was a Herculean effort on a difficult solo, especially with the poly rhythms! I would be interested in getting the PDF of the transcription.
Those are just telling you what beat some of the notes should fall on to help you get a sense of how that weird rhythm should go. So the 3 above the g in measure 100 is telling you that the g falls on beat 3, and the 4a above the f in measure 100 is telling you to land on that f on the and of beat 4, and vice versa👍
+Tomek Soltys Good on you. I always start on transcriptions all like, "I'm gonna make it this time and get some more language *20 minutes later*...... *door slams*". Can't believe you have the patience to complete a project like this. Seriously, how the hell do you do this? I want to know.
Incroyable solo! Pour ceux qui seraient intéressés je parle de ce solo dans mon workshop sur la créativité rythmique: th-cam.com/video/roPOXJzk68U/w-d-xo.html
This is a Charlie Parker composition...yet someone else's name is in the spot that is reserved for the composer. Everyone is mentioned EXCEPT the composer...UNACCEPTABLE!
+haroun elnil Yes, and while we're at it, let's not forget to give a credit to the REAL composer of this tune - I Got Rhythm - George Gershwin. Strictly speaking, Anthropology is just a variation on that song.
Nobody talked about copyright or law,so there's no need to be rude. You can't copyright harmony of the tune, only melody, so legally you're correct. But the tune and solos are based on a harmony and form written by Gershwin and without him there wouldn't be Anthropology or many other jazz lines using these chord changes. That's all I meant, ok?
There are only two things that the ALL the musicians in a band have on common...the tempo and the melody...NOT the harmony! By convention there is a place on the music for the composer's name. Just like meter and key. It's on every piece of music you've ever seen. The pianist could have just broken in playing running chords, but he didn't he chose to play Charlie Parker's melody. On the recording, that fact must be properly documented. ...and it was NOT properly documented on the music. Good Day.
I'm sorry to disappoint you, but you don't seem to know the most basic thing about jazz. In jazz we improvise on harmony of the tune and NOT on melody. The tempo is also optional and is usually decided by the leader. Bud chose to play this particular Parker' "line" because it's a good one and he liked it, but he and his trio still improvised on "I Got Rhythm" chord changes originated by George Gershwin. That's that in a nutshell!...... On the second matter, I fully agree with you that composers (Parker and Dizzy Gillespie*s) names should have been stated and share in your disgust over the people responsible for failing to do so. We have no argument on this account. Good Day to you as well!
Story has it that Brad got up about around 9pm, had breakfast, then opened the gig with this...
just Brad being Brad
Tomek Soltys i fucked brad!

Nice job with the transcription!
Face-melting stuff. It's so perfectly formed, too, with interest and surprises around every corner. A top solo.

This is one of my favourite piano solos of all times, thank you for sharing this! Congrats on your work.
Clocked at 316 bpm. I tried to practice this but my metronome caught fire.
Bryant Miano lol insanity

Matthew Newton people use their phones for metronomes nowadays and they clock in at 500 BPM for the max most of the time

This is one of the most interesting solos I have ever heard in my life, incredible stuff from Brad here. Thank you for sharing!

WOW what a play and what a transcription!
Fantastic work and thank you so much for sharing.
Jumpy nervousness, fingers almost STUCK, followed by full bore swinging! Brilliant contrast!
When he stops doubling he basically writes another tune over the original changes. What a beast!
both mehldau and the transcriber are on fire here; subscribed....

Amazing performance but also amazing transcription !!! Well done !!
What do the 1, 3, 4a, and 2a written above the septuplets at 1:17 mean?
