    My fishing buddy told me that his old 4400ss wasn't right, the anti reverse didn't work. I was amazed that you had a vedio dedicated to just this issue, I was able to repair the reel in short order. I also have a 4400ss, it has caught many a fish over the years. Great video and good advise, as usual. Thanks!

    Absolutely beautiful reel! Wish it was mine. You’ll never believe this but - I know how to fix this problem. I’ve done this on quite a few Penn Reels. I thought this reel might be one of Nick’s reels. This one is different from my own older Penn reels but I had the opportunity to work on one of these. Also this is slightly like an old Penn 105 Silver Series though more complicated. You don’t have the problem of how to remove the main gear. Anyway I could never do this as well as you! I do like this reel though. Maybe I’ll start investigating collecting some of these Penn Saltwater reels. I know they command high prices on EBay. These reels are more modern than my older Penn Z reels and much more than my 704 and 700 greenies. The dogs on those reels will shoot out and fly across the room if you’re not careful. That’s why you put the handle back on so the main gear will prevent that. I truly admire your skill and experience with these great reels. Also your channel has enabled me to meet and correspond with some really great collectors and restorers that know so much more than I do. I got a nice note from Bob today about his Mitchell 306A project. I have one of those and restored the reel myself so I can really relate. If it is possible to find the parts he needs I’m sure the two names I gave him can do it. They have always found what I needed or directed me to the place or person who had it especially for Mitchell reels. Steve has invited me to visit his Mitchell parts warehouse at Carolina Supply. He literally has several million parts for Mitchells and other reels including Daiwa, Pflueger, and Penn. He also does fine fiberglass repairs and customizing of fishing rods. I think he is sort of giving that up now. He, like you, does a lot of work for charter boats near him, in fact he has his own 58’ offshore fishing boat or yacht much like a Hatteras or in that style. He is about 80 now and I’m not sure how much longer he will continue working as hard as he does.He has had some offers for buying his inventory but he knows what he has and won’t just give it away!. He kindly took me under his wing and has taught me a lot. He is a very special man and a good friend.
    This was a very interesting and skillfully done video Dennis!!!

      Gene: Carolina Supply is located in Sneads Ferry, NC on the coast north of Wilmington. He has a site on EBay by that name. If you give me an e-mail address I will send you the info. I have from the company business card. They are the best source for Mitchell parts that I know of. I also have a great contact in FL that I’ll share with you. I have 18 Mitchell reels that both of these companies have really helped me to restore. They have parts available for many vintage reels!

      Gene I’m not sure exactly how to do that. It might be possible to message me on my EBay acct. but I’m not sure how secure that is. You will need an EBay acct. to do this. My EBay acct name is ctjenkins1954. Problem is I rarely sell on EBay and am not selling anything right now. If you can figure out how to message me there go ahead and I will be notified. Send your e-mail there and no one else should be able to see it. If you e-mail Dennis he knows my e-mail address and can give it to you with my permission. You can then e-mail me and I’ll forward the information to you in a reply. That’s about all the ways I can figure to do it. Carolina Supply is listed on EBay as “Carolina_Supply” if that helps. You can go to his site, pick an item on his page and go to it. Then find the information on the page about the seller. You can contact him there with an EBay message to ask any question you might have. Again I think you’ll have to have an EBay acct. to do this though.

      Gene : The EBay site is called “thefisher_man” and is a great source for fishing reel parts, trades, or repairs. It is run by Mike and Kathleen Arthur in DeLand, FL I think. You should be able to find him on EBay just like Steve at Carolina_Supply. If you can message him and get his business telephone number that is what I’d recommend. I enjoy talking with both of these and if there is a way they will help you. What are you working on right now? If I can help out with either of these sources just let me know.

      Gene Given that the Mitchell 300 historically is the most popular spinning reel ever made and so many were built you should have no trouble finding these parts. You’ll save time if you can call them. Let me try to find their numbers for you.
      Okay I found their business cards in my files. I didn’t know I had them. Carolina Supply 910-581-9750 Steve Brinkley Is his name. The Fisher Man - 386-624-6920 Mike and Kathleen Arthur. This is off their business cards so I don’t think they mind me sharing this. Mike also has a web site: www.thefisher-man.com. I always do better talking to them to get what I need.

    Ok so i just did this repair and it works if you hold the reel with the handle slightly up but does not work if you move the reel in a jigging motion for say a lure....the older 4400ssg does not have a dog spring like the newer one does i have both really like the new model better....i took it back apart and cleaned and lubed everything 3 or 4 times still does not work??? should i pinch the dog fingers tight ? I am at a loss.....My reel has been used much more then tom's and my dog gear was the same im guessing the little fingers wear out with time.... I noticed the bottom of the flat brass gear has a slight ring indentation on the bottom is that for the small indent on the finger to kinda hold? any help would be appreciated.....You have the patience of a saint....

      when i ay up i mean on its side cockeyed so gravity helps the dog for lack of a better way to put it....

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would try pinching it. My guess is that the dog is not holding and dropping to the side to engage when jigging because it is too loose. You can also order a replacement dog through Mysticparts.com if one is needed. I just did one a few weeks back and the tip had sheared off of the dog and no matter how much you pinched it, the fingers would not reach the ratchet. - Dennis

      @@2ndChanceTackle thank you i did use a new dog..The post the dog rides on had some build up i cleaned that and it still did it... the dog was kicking up and not dropping i took it apart a few times pinched it a few times then used a round file on the inside of the dog hole to make its move more free and it now seems to work well ... not sure what thing fixed it? but its working decent LOL.... all the bearings seem tight my pinion gear seemed to have a little wear and the reel is not as smooth as it should be ...do you have videos on doing shims? and whats the best way to get the bearing off the handle side of main gear it seems to be set or peened in place? this is on the older style with the older dog... my newer 4400ss seems a little rough also i mean very slight ....I may sell them and buy a newer 440ss as they have infinite anti reverse .... what are your thoughts on the best series of these older penns? and thanks for your videos ...i took apart a 4/0 last week and had to find your video on the gear stacks... to put back correctly

    Great as always! However you did not mention that the early versions of the SS series had a serious design flaw. There was no slot or groove for the Eclip to fit into! The Eclips all popped off. Then the Antireverse dog would come loose. Penn fixed this issue and added a groove in later manufacturing. For a while a 3rd party company sold a kit to correct this. Penn did fix my reel dog for free long after warranty was up but only because I was able to speak on the phone to one of the few old guys still working there from the US assembly days. This anti reverse design is a real weak point of this series. I feel this series should have been recalled and everyone given free repair or replacement. I had this failure ruin a fishing vacation. US Penn reels were supposed to be Mack Trucks but this poor design led to the end of US manufacturing and Penn reliability.

      Thanks for the update and comments. I don't think I have seen the earlier ones with that lacked the groove. Always learning! I appreciate you sharing the knowledge - Dennis

    This model of penn...made the sound.. click click??

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the anti-reverse dog clicking against the ratchet that holds it from backspin. If you take the anti-reverse feature off, the click goes away - Dennis
