Well, well. I don't use Serum. The only software I use these days are Ableton, Reason, and a few vst plug ins from Arturia & Roland. + a few hardware synths and devices. However, I'm not here to digress. I only want to remark on how entertaining this video was IMO. A talent I rarely see. You got yourself my LSD (Like, Sub, Digress) Comment bundle. Well Done.

YES it lacks sort of the true warmth of anologue, but the sounds that u can make from it when u master sound design comes very close to analogue. AGIAN FOR SOMEONE WITH LESS TIME> OUT OF THE BOX COULD NOT MAKE THESE LUSH SOUNDS EASY, it would be easier to just purchase sylenth or uhes zebra or something more analogue sounding
I imagine it's like the DX7's sounds quickly becoming stereotypical. Since we live in a world where every teenager with 1000+ dollars to spend on a computer and music software can make it, so there's just so much of it. But I think it's also going to get nostalgic just as quickly and stay around.
The best thing about Serum has always been its design. Everything is so easily accessible, so intuitive and easy to learn, the visual feedback is amazing.
This is such an important point! I used wavetable synths before - like the on that comes with live or the excellent vital, which is a little undersold in this video to be honest. And while those provide you with more or less the same options, it wasn't until I bought serum when I truly started to get into sound design. Serum told me how to design exactly the sound I am looking for. Now I can do it with all the others but I still use serum on every track because it is just so easy and intuitive to work with.
@@waynesilverman3048100%, saw a tutorial with a sub37 wavetable, i think of sellimg the sub because serum can do it like the original. Hint google wavetables serum, insert favourite synth in the search.
I've only played with Serum a few times, but what stood out for me is the filter selection. As a mostly west-coast/modulation person it blows my mind when I do reach for a filter and am surprised that most softsynths don't offer many types. Also while it's obviously designed and marketed for EDM I'm sure that Serum can sound more subtle and varied without too much work.
i did rent to own on serum through splice like 3 years ago when i first got started. it has been my go-to synth because of how many sound packs are being offered by really good sound designers. there are things you can do in processing to add warmth to the synth. i personally run all my serum tracks through a tape vst to add that subtle warmth and grit that can make all the difference.
Single most used plugin I've ever bought! The possibilities feel truly endless, I still get new sounds out of it all the time. The ability to render the entire patch as a new wavetable is wild, and continues to yield new results.
Good watch! As someone who has dabbled in many modern Drum & Bass tunes, the reality is that Serum is good for both analog and extremely digital sounds. The basic waves and noises can yield fantastic results with some of the misc LPs in terms of sounding analog, while the reverb and comb filters are in a league of their own in terms of assisting with the creation of harsh leads and basses. Genuinely really surprised that more synths haven't implemented a reverb filter like this one has.
HOW DARE YOU :D I guess it was inevitable that serum appeared on this show. Jokes aside I use rarely anything else on my productions. Drum Samples with Kikzilla, Serum for Synths and Hainbachs "Noises" for Atmosphere. That combination gives me the best results for acid techno. awesome episode!

In my adult life I tried to get back into it as a way to have a "cool hobby" to impress people and make myself attractive, but someone I really respected the opinion of called my music mechanical and soulless. I just kind of stopped after that. I don't have the time or energy now, what with 50-60 hour work weeks. It doesn't really matter, I never made anything worth a damn anyway. She was right, it WAS mechanical and soulless.

Don't let anyone else tell you music is not worth doing! It's worth it if you enjoy it.

A good month ago I bought Pigments 4 half price during an Arturia promotion. It is truly endless, and it looks kinda similar in power. I also have U-he Hive 2 and that one is quite inspiring, really. Hopefully you can eventually look at them as well.
Its still a good VST dont get be wrong, especially with the sheer number of presets people have made, but I feel there are better plugins out there, especially now.
I know a lot of people complain about digital synths being "VSTs in a box" (even though most actually aren't), but I'd love an actual "VST in a box" hardware version of this. I know there's the Korg Modwave but that still seems to actually need Serum if you want to make custom presets for it.
DO VITAL NEXT! That definitely wouldnt be redundant! Also I've commented something similar to this before, but there's a serious lack of videos about the Jupiter X's built in synth engines. Particularly the XV-5080. A video using one of those/comparing the XV-5080 emulation to the original would be awesome, but I'd imagine that would be difficult to fit into the bad gear formula.

I’ve used the Jupiter Bass preset on Vital (with some minor envelope and filter adjustments) on quite a few things I’ve done. It’s also a lot less overwhelming than Serum in my opinion.
Nicely balanced. That first jam captured what I've always found difficult about software synths in general - they overpower absolutely everything else. It takes a lot of work to thin them down to mix properly with all my analogue and digital stuff, so whilst they have that initial "wow" factor, you quickly tire of them and go back to hardware!
7:08 the fact that Serum is still used by MANY very advanced DNB producers for mind bending basses and incredibly punchy drums is more than proof that it still holds up ;)
@@AudioPilz i do however hate how its default unison stereo width makes it completely non mono compatible. I used to make these insane wide stereo basses with it and when i discovered that it was a best practice to have the foundational sounds of a track be mono compatible, i found out the hard way that my sounds did not hold up :(
your videos are like those slideshow presentations we did in school trying to look cool by using all the fontwork and transitions but YOU take it to a higher ground. the animations in the jams were next level! you must really put effort in that.
Vital is ridiculously good, and has features that Serum doesn't have, and vice versa. I love them both! And I love making wavetables in the old freesynth FMetal. Bad gear? Not a chance!
Duda made some great synths in Reaktor back in the day. They are probably still on NI site in the user library. I believe they were originaly made for NIN to use on tour.
I love the interface and control but something often sounds soulless about serum. It really does have the best interface in soft synths tho. So quick capable and a pleasure to use.

It's something about wavetable synthesis, serum included, where like you say the sounds feel empty, like they're missing something, like they lack weight. I don't know quite how to put it. And it's not a digital vs analog sort of thing. There are some incredible soft synths out there, just something about wavetables, I don't know? Regardless, as always, amazing video!
Not using a fixed velocity and having it modulate the gain and other parameters would already make it less soulless. People just tend to use it in a specific way. It's a musicians job to bring soul into their music.
To be honest this was the best demonstration of Serum - at least compared to when I scoured TH-cam two months ago to decide between Serum and Pigments. I knew I should have gotten Serum - it just has more character than most other software.
I mainly use serum to convert drum loops and reprocess complex wt positioned lfo mods into simple wts, or cool sounds on other hardware synths i use, to send to my hardware wt synth (modwave): And the resynthesis on serum is great. You can say serum is cold or tinny, but with all the filters it has, and eq options, I'm thinking it's all how you use it. Maybe it's easier to make a thin tone than a fat one, but you can still do it on serum. One last thing ive always liked about it too is you can make your own sounds also with the formula parser. I've actually made lots this way that I like at least Love the memes though!

The workflow of phaseplant is lacking imo. having to add all the filters and oscs in everytime is not convenient
The price of Vital is perfect.

I’ve used the Jupiter Bass preset on Vital (with some minor envelope and filter adjustments) on quite a few things I’ve done. It’s also a lot less overwhelming than Serum in my opinion.

Nicely balanced. That first jam captured what I've always found difficult about software synths in general - they overpower absolutely everything else. It takes a lot of work to thin them down to mix properly with all my analogue and digital stuff, so whilst they have that initial "wow" factor, you quickly tire of them and go back to hardware!

I've never used Serum but that sound at 4:17 was used in Sonic Mania. I couldn't pick this synth out otherwise

@@AudioPilz i do however hate how its default unison stereo width makes it completely non mono compatible.
I used to make these insane wide stereo basses with it and when i discovered that it was a best practice to have the foundational sounds of a track be mono compatible, i found out the hard way that my sounds did not hold up :(

Vital is ridiculously good, and has features that Serum doesn't have, and vice versa. I love them both! And I love making wavetables in the old freesynth FMetal. Bad gear? Not a chance!

Duda made some great synths in Reaktor back in the day. They are probably still on NI site in the user library. I believe they were originaly made for NIN to use on tour.

I love the interface and control but something often sounds soulless about serum. It really does have the best interface in soft synths tho. So quick capable and a pleasure to use.

It's something about wavetable synthesis, serum included, where like you say the sounds feel empty, like they're missing something, like they lack weight. I don't know quite how to put it. And it's not a digital vs analog sort of thing. There are some incredible soft synths out there, just something about wavetables, I don't know? Regardless, as always, amazing video!
Not using a fixed velocity and having it modulate the gain and other parameters would already make it less soulless.
People just tend to use it in a specific way.
It's a musicians job to bring soul into their music.

To be honest this was the best demonstration of Serum - at least compared to when I scoured TH-cam two months ago to decide between Serum and Pigments. I knew I should have gotten Serum - it just has more character than most other software.

I mainly use serum to convert drum loops and reprocess complex wt positioned lfo mods into simple wts, or cool sounds on other hardware synths i use, to send to my hardware wt synth (modwave):
And the resynthesis on serum is great.
You can say serum is cold or tinny, but with all the filters it has, and eq options, I'm thinking it's all how you use it. Maybe it's easier to make a thin tone than a fat one, but you can still do it on serum.
One last thing ive always liked about it too is you can make your own sounds also with the formula parser. I've actually made lots this way that I like at least
