One thing that everyone is wrong about- it was never about love or obsession or even seeing his daughter as his possession. It was never about his daughter at all. This man wanted to keep his daughter simply to punish his wife/ex wife for daring to stand up to him, tell him she wasn't going to take his abuse anymore and leaving him. He didn't care about having his daughter, he just knew she wanted their daughter and so would do anything to keep her from having the daughter and would cause destruction- knowing she'd feel guilty- when she did have their daughter. If he wanted to keep the girl due to obsession or twisted love or whatever, he would have taken her and moved away, maybe even to another country, trying to hide away. But he didn't. He rubbed it in her face because the point was always to punish her for daring to leave. That's why he let his daughter go without a fight later on- he had a new wife, someone new to posess and control, and hed already done what he set out to do- made hisex give up custody by giving her thechoice between having her daughter and public safety. Even though she wasn't responsible for any of those killings, he knew she'd feel that way and eventually give in to him, meaning he'd "win". It was all her ever wanted- for her to admit he still controlled her.
Agree 100%... unfortunately from personal experience.... Its sad and emotionally destroying when you are forced(primarily by the courts) to choose between your childs life and their fathers "madness"....after multiple late returns from court ordered access visits...he just disappeared with child... the AFP then got involved....at it's worst l was told by ex that l only had one choice to make.. "Did l want our child to live or die", if he didn't get at least shared custody🥺 ...after all these years l still don't know if l made the right decision but we all lived to tell the tale. The family courts need a massive overhaul still, thirty years later🤔
So all these people died because a big man baby didn't get his way. Incredible. Andrea is an remarkable lady. Amazing, amazing video!!! Keep 'em coming!!!
I agree with you! He never would have hurt the child but he would have continued to murder people over her. The mother sacrificed her happiness and love with her child for the safety of others and that does make her remarkable!
@@chickenlover657she didnt want to get killed also. Yea,it is a bad thing to do but both could have lost their lives, even by knowing what he did. She knows what he did and couldnt stop him from taking her child. She believed everything would be okay and her child would escape by police saving her,but that didnt happen.
RIP Steven I story makes me sick , how these domestic abusers ruin so many lives just because they are so mentally stunted and evil to the core with hate.
I don't understand how this man was allowed to threaten, scare and murder people for so long. If they had followed him and kept tabs on him 24/7 like they should have they would have caught him doing things, threatening people and planting bombs. It's ridiculous what he was able to get away with. I don't get it...
I AGREE!! The wife had been telling them this for YEARS! If they were intelligent they'd connect all these crimes to this family situation. All they had to do was wait till a judge took away his right to see his child for a period of time & perform surveillance 24/7! Duh... But then again Australia is KNOWN for having lackadaisical laws as well as police that aren't the brightest & best. They just follow master's orders, no critical thinking allowed!
@@kristenwolfe5272 I agree. I cannot believe that incompetence on such a level is possible. And after the book was published, ALL OF A SUDDEN they were able to find enough evidence and lock him up. Which is proof that they could, if they wanted to.
What an absolute miscarriage of justice. The fact that Andrea had to put Trudi in the hands of a monster to attempt to stop the killings is both horrifying and revolting. At no point should that have ever been an option that had to cross her mind.
I don't agree. I know she could've just as well leave the country and just not watch news about him anymore, but since she didn't, who knows how many lives she saved with her selfless decision. I don't condemn her for not doing it sooner, and I wouldn't have condemned her if she never did it, but she had to be very brave and tough for that decision. However, I still think the police should've done better to stop him. I understand her, seeing how not even police could help.
@@ArissXAS it doesn't sound like they're condemning her, more like they're condemning the system for forcing her to have to choose between keeping her daughter and giving her to a monster to prevent more people from being hurt and killed, because they couldn't do their job properly.
The obvious motive, the fireman's thread... This video showed how weak the Australian police force was at the time more than anything, because the signs were all there. It's so unfortunate and unfair that he was allowed to reign terror over the people of Australia for so long.
It showed how weak the people were. My grandmother would have killed him. Literally. (And probably have dared a court to convict her) Hell over here a cop would have probably killed him as soon as he started threatening the police.
@@RecklessInternettingI mean look at FriendlyJordies and how he’s been treated by Australian police, where they terrorised his editor etc, Australian police are an actual joke I swear
It's pretty darn obvious all the connections the bombings and murders had...they were all connected to Andrea and Trudy. He was not a serial killer, but a Narcissistic revenge killer. How those detectives never pieced that together is ridiculous.
Like the way the Australian police say that the deaths of the in-laws of this lady, Erin, might be coincidental and that there could be ‘a totally innocent’ reason for it. They died after eating the pie Erin cooked, which contained the toxic mushrooms. Erin and her children were not affected. Her ex-husband nearly died last year after a mystery stomach illness put him in the ICU for 21 days. He was in a coma. Despite all that, the police can’t seem to be able to join the dots. They are investigating her and they have taken her children away as a precautionary measure. Good to know that.
Unbelievable that a serial killer was able to live as a FREE man for more than 35 years! That's no justice for his poor victims. Andrea's brother was also killed at 25 and he wasn't arrested either, all I can say is that Andrea was extremely noble even giving her child back to him for full custody, how on earth did she cope with not knowing if he would harm Trudi just to spite her too? Horrific situation. I understand why people feel obliged to take the law into their own hands., perhaps innocents lives could have been saved from this monster.
He didn't love his daughter, he was only interested in having her as a possession and inflicting maximum pain on her mother and anyone who tried to stop him. Typical malignant narcissist.
Exactly what happened to me. My dad took my and my 5 siblings for 11 years and I just recently got out 6 months ago. Trying to get my brother out still… got to reconnect with my mom. She was alienated from her kids for over a decade.
Amazing how an innocent person can be arrested and serve jail time with coercion but an actual violent criminal can't be touched without physical evidence first.
It sounds like all English speaking countries have the same identical issues going on, the police there can't go after this guy Leonard, but they have huge populations of homeless citizens that they ignore, and refuse to build affordable housing for them, even seniors and disabled people, working class renters. It's not random, it's not " market forces" either. It's part of a long term plan, that started in the early 1980's. Neoliberalism, actually. Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher lead this policy trend. Bad men like Leonard have free reign, while law abiding, average citizens really suffer !!
From the experience of 30years of hell begging police and our justice system for protection for me and my family. It took a private prosecution to force the police and the Courts and also a Notice of Motion presented before the New South Wales Parliament before the Justice System in Australia were forced to hold our abusive perpetrator accountable!! We are now free to live in peace.
This whole case is frustrating but it's even worse to know that Australia first used DNA to solve a case in 1989, and it was commonplace in the '90s. The fact that they had that at their disposal and didn't think to test cold case evidence - especially such a major case! - until journalists wrote a book about it is disgusting. He still would have walked free far too long if they got him in the '90s, but only arresting him in 2015 is reprehensible.
Actually it was Britain in the 1986 case of child rapist and killer Colin Pitchfork. You can read about it in detail in the Joseph Wambaugh book "The Blooding".
This is what was unforgiveable in this case (and so many others). DNA profiling was common before that detective remembered the blood stain in 2012. How is it that he didn't remember it sooner? How is it that they ignored the blood stain for decades? Reprehensible.
I'm shocked somebody didn't take this man out a long time ago... He was a clear and present danger to anyone remotely close to his vindictive nature. He proved that too many times
The way things are going in society these days Oh man. I had to take the law into my own hands not long ago because cops send junkies and gang stalk me Cops with all the crime now look at all the crime
" I had to do it, what choice did I have?". The answer is you kill the mother F'er. Honestly I'm shocked the cops didn't do that when he started threatening them. I'm no fan of vigilantes but this would have been self defense in my book.
@@ThursdaysGirl I was raised by my grandparents. My grandmother was born in the 1920s. She lived through a time when not much was done about domestic violence. So her solution to it was simple. Kill the bastard in his sleep. (She was an Irish red head that according to her father had "too much of the devil in her"). On the other side my grandfather was a backwoods country bootlegger from a family of bootleggers. I was taught from a young age the only person you can count on to solve your problems and protect you is you. Law enforcement is nice and all but not something you can bet your life on.
And then go to prison for it? If it's planned it's nor self-defense, they justice could care less if you tell them you are certain the man was planning your murder if it's not a defense against a direct attack in which the consequence is death of the attacker it's still murder. Not sure about USA but in Europe if let's say someone attacks you in your home and you fight back and cause a fatal wound you must justify why you inflicted a fatal wound and not one that just incapacitated the attacker. I remember years ago this case of the owner of a jewelry fatally shooting an itruder he was judged for murder because he shot the intruder from distance basically he shot him not knowing if said person was there to kill or to rob. It happened like a decade ago but I still remember thinking “ the intruder knew that the man was very rich, entered the house knowing that the owner could be was inside and had a weapon, his it is possible that now the owner is being judged because he decided to shot and not politely wait till the intruder took his weapon and pointed it at him”. The fact that the intruder had a weapon on him was the only thing that saved that man from prison. I also remember thinking “this case would have been so simple in USA” but here in the end the victims always have less rights than the attackers.
@@LifeInPink999 in the US if someone breaks into your home you are usually justified in killing them.(we have a lot of self defense /stand your ground laws here) And it depends on the time period. Anytime before 1980 you had a good chance of getting away with killing someone as long as you were a little careful. And even until the 90s you had a halfway decent chance. (Unless you were a serial killer). At the time this took place you had a really good chance of getting away with it as long as no one saw you do it. And if no one ever found the body your chances went up drastically.
Lack of evidence. Ok. But what about using the process of elimination? Narrow the suspects down and find a common thread. And then the murders stop when he gets his daughter? Ugh.
I'm not a lawyer, and especially not an Aussie one, but I'm pretty sure elimination doesn't really count as evidence in court. It needs to be strong and supported by other evidence. I'm still baffled at how it took them 35 years to arrest the man.
... and as sooas the book came out, all of a sudden they were able to find evidence and arrest him. Because it had become too embarrassing for them, so they decided to get their asses moving.
I don't agree, I think it was real fathers love, when she'd grew up she could decide on her own (and she did, she left him) but 'till then....don't f with fathers who dearly love their daughters
@@rowlandwetmaker I hope to God you’re a troll because what he was doing had nothing to do with love. What he was doing had everything to do with being a controlling, manipulative psychotic murder.
@@rowlandwetmakerYou're a monster if you think this is "real father's love". He had a history of violence towards the mother and killed numerous innocent people when it was unnecessary. Could you terrorise the mother of your child and then bomb the locations where they lived, threating to kill family that were close to them, creating constant fear for your child that you supposedly "love"? This isn't love. You don't kill innocent people out of love when there is simply no need. What would you suggest then? Have the wife comply with a psychotic abuser who beats her? No one "fucked" with him. His own actions of abuse caused this.
The thing is it was never about his daughter, it was always about punishing her mother. Violent control individuals don't care about people, they only care about their control. When his wife left him he lost control and that was unforgivable to him.
If the police can’t defend society, IT needs to take action. The police and justice system FAILED utterly in this case, they could have easily booked him just on the abuse, stalking and kidnapping charges. And they should have guarded the obvious targets from the start. The even more insane thing is that he got his way, and got the daughter. Incredible she had to give her daughter to a serial murderer! What was wrong with the justice system? However I do hope he will FINALLY get his punishment in jail. Still don’t understand why they didn’t go for the DNA evidence earlier. They could have probably send him to jail 15-20 years sooner.
I hope the society fix this, it's very messed up and your right, the police should actually do something instead of sitting around while people get hurt or abused.
I just cannot fathom, and stop laughing at the absurd, incompetence of Australia’s policing. I can think of several ways, to take him out, permanently. And easily. 1) like the OP said, you arrest him on one if not all three charges, and he’s gone for 30 years. Then, DNA is around, and you slap him with murder. 2) Or, after his arrest, he’s in jail. He just happens, to have an bad “accident”. He doesn’t survive, and unfortunately, no witnesses. 3) on his way to work, 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗠! he’s hit, and dies, the driver took off. Oops, no witnesses. 4) Uh, no. 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗠! His house is on fire.Ahh, “Let the mother fker burn”. Burn, mother fker burn. 𝗛𝗮𝗛𝗮𝗛𝗮𝗛𝗮! I just happen to love #4 the best. So easy Peezy, and they wouldn’t have been, more people, murdered, and the city terrorized, by this evil serial killer. Because, this psychopath, couldn’t have custody of his daughter. This is easily one of the best true crime channels on TH-cam. Amongst a sea of similarity The Unseen manages to have a distinct personality. The scripts are consistently clear, concise and well researched. Historical photos, news clips and audio are well selected to support the narrative and connect us to the actual events. Great voiceover free from artifice or affect. And most importantly The Unseen centers on the victims and survivors. While the killers are fascinating because their behavior is so anomalous and abhorrent, they are monsters who do not deserve the spotlight. Thank you for such great content and for keeping the focus on the people who deserve our attention and compassion
Hard agree. They're very victim-focused, and respectfully choose not to rehash details of things like sexual assault details out of consideration for the victims. They stick to the facts and don't give a lot of commentary as if the case is an entertaining show like a lot of true crime channels do.

Then once he got her he was very controlling and verbally abusive towards his daughter, because I saw another documentary were she is talking about she couldn't do anything not even have friends or any kind of social life. Some of these folks in family court to mentally and emotionally drain and torture the other parent and they don't care anything about their child. 😢

I wonder why Trudy was never included. Has she since passed on? Was she just not as willing as her Mom to bring up the horrible past. That would be a perfectly understandable reason if she chose not to. But I don't recall hearing anything about why she wasn't. Maybe I missed it. It seems like such a glaring omission. I:m just curious as to why she's not featured. So many people here left with so much destruction and heartache, and so many others carrying so much guilt with them over their life, even though he's the reason for all of it, not them. And he still got to live out the best years of his life free. Still, it's good to see him finally get consequences. I only hope he spent all those years worried and looking over his shoulder about that day. Great videos!

And maybe wouldn’t have been at all if it weren’t for journalists bringing attention to the case? I mean….

Have to agree. We had an attempted home invasion & it took the police 6hours to attend the desperate 000 calls we made. When they got there, they couldn't have cared less even though it was the second night in a row he'd tried to get in! We had to move out and spend over a week at a motel while we waited for security to be installed. As soon as we moved back into the house the security alarm was triggered & this time the police casually rolled up at 10am the next morning! - They couldn't understand why I refused to speak to them except to tell them to get off the property!!
This is so sad, all those lives lost because of this selfish heartless man. I can’t imagine how this woman feels thinking that if she hadn’t married this evil man how different life would have turned out for her 😢
This was infuriating to watch. The U.S. definitely has poor law enforcement and a terrible justice system but what took place in this story is absolutely egregious. The victims need to be compensated by the government. Crazy.
This is a fantastic representation of why vigilante justice is sometimes acceptable and needs to be protected if ever taken to court. This man ended so many lives, ruined so many families, and got away with it because properly dealing with him was not protected by the law. Juries should never convict anybody for doing the right thing, even if it was illegal.
He is one of the biggest piece of shit in Australia's criminal history. So awful it took nearly 35 years to actually convict him, and so many people suffered because of him. I know the daughter and wife of one of his victims and as you'd expect from this level of trauma, they continue to suffer with their loss 😞 thanks for your well made video on this tragic story
I seriously can't believe he was able to go so long doing what he was doing. If they truly had surveillance on him, they should have caught him in the act on more than one occasion! Not only that, but was he still allowed to keep working for the fire department? If so, why? Finally, why couldn't they get a court order to at least get a blood sample from him? Like they do with DNA today?

That's why he let his daughter go without a fight later on- he had a new wife, someone new to posess and control, and hed already done what he set out to do- made hisex give up custody by giving her thechoice between having her daughter and public safety. Even though she wasn't responsible for any of those killings, he knew she'd feel that way and eventually give in to him, meaning he'd "win". It was all her ever wanted- for her to admit he still controlled her.

Its sad and emotionally destroying when you are forced(primarily by the courts) to choose between your childs life and their fathers "madness"....after multiple late returns from court ordered access visits...he just disappeared with child... the AFP then got involved....at it's worst l was told by ex that l only had one choice to make..
"Did l want our child to live or die", if he didn't get at least shared custody🥺
...after all these years l still don't know if l made the right decision but we all lived to tell the tale.
The family courts need a massive overhaul still, thirty years later🤔

But then again Australia is KNOWN for having lackadaisical laws as well as police that aren't the brightest & best. They just follow master's orders, no critical thinking allowed!

Look the lad up, his deep diving into the corruption of NSW [The place where this whole shitshow also happened in] will both amaze and disgust you. The man got FIREBOMBED for crying out loud, yet he keeps going.)
They are stupid.
What insanity is this? I can't fathom how they let that monster roam for decades. What incompetence.
SMH…😮 how can this man do all these killings right under the police’s nose and get away with it for so long? If they ever had searched his house in the first place, I’m sure they would have found some traces of the material used on the bombings.. very poor investigation. The fact that the mother had to give up her daughter to stop the killings, instead of police doing their job, made me furious.
A sad and heart wrenching case of the most incompetent, useless and innept law enforcement system I have ever heard of!!!! 🤬
Near the end he says Trudy her Mum and her sister (I think) are still close
She moved away from him when she was 16.. and he let her go
Is the mother of the child Are you nuts.
This just tells me the intelligence (or laziness) of Australian law enforcement. There is none.
As far as I can tell, Australia also seems quite generally anti-woman and certainly anti-feminist. This is obvious in the police unwillingness to confront abusing and controlling men.
This is my new favorite TH-cam channel!
As the ever-wise Judge Judy says:
'You have to love your children more than you hate each other '!
Very well made piece, high quality with such sound presenting of the facts. Thank you ❤
Really enjoying all these 🇦🇺 Oz cases. You're finding some wild ones! So far, I don't think I've seen any of them covered by other True Crime Creators. I had forgotten about this guy, but now I definitely remember the Family Law Courts Bombings!
Well Done... This Aussie says more please 😊
Is it alright to beat someone’s knees in if they threaten our lives? Just asking for a friend.
This is a story of Australian police incompetence. Absolutely enraging.
I notice everyone hates their governments and law-enforcements.
The law always seems to be on the side of evil! You had to be there to judge not by these days. Ray Watson paid a very high price.
Wow!! Atrue crime case I have never heard of And it is so incredible. Thank you!!
Love your channel, keep em coming !!
._.
The fact that they didn't even just go ahead and charge him for the smaller stuff he's been doing blows my mind. Like not even for harrassment or a restraining order. Sure a paper wouldn't stop him but it sounds like they didn't even really try to take action.
Breathtaking incompetence by Australien police. Why didn't they put
this monster under surveilance 24/7???
That was one of the wildest Tru crime stories I've heard, and I've heard a lot. Great work, keep it up
Just a correction he was a volunteer firefighter that wasn’t his regular job. Also thanks to a brave news investigation he was arrested and convicted.
An amazing story. I am lost for words. Thank you for the excellent cover ❤
I would never hand my child over to a mad man. I can’t believe the police were so incompetent.
I would of finished him if I was her
She should of joined a more powerful cult n screwed him over
I agree!
It was a beyond extreme situation and that move did stop further attacks and murders.
Astounding story I would probably never heard about if it wasn't for TH-cam and your work! I'm amazed by the sheer number of documented nutcases like this that we get to know about now. Great work! I used to believe that people were kind first and foremost. How naive of me!
Not to be overly critical, but I can’t imagine this guy remaining free for 35 years if this went down in the US. DNA technology was plenty far advanced in the early 2000’s to match him to these crimes, but he’s not even arrested until 2015? And maybe wouldn’t have been at all if it weren’t for journalists bringing attention to the case? I mean….
Similar has happened here though with DNA. And quite a few exonerations of innocent people after years. It’s just sad and scary how so many slip through the cracks. What an evil man.
You're giving the US too much credit. lol
@@FelonDog If someone was bombing courthouses in the US, I think there would have been a bigger sense of urgency than 3.5 decades to get the guy they KNEW did it already.
Since he was going after government officials, probably, but if he was going after others, nah
@@colinwoods9601 this. This guy would be found and under the jail quick.
This is the second documentary I've seen on this case and it is still just mind blowing to me that he was allowed to get away with all of this AND get custody of his daughter. If I was Trudi's mother, I would have disappeared with her (it was easier to disappear back then) to parts unknown. There'd be no way in hell I'd let a murderer have my child.
Shameful, couldn't protect their people.
What a weak law system! This guy should've been dealt with so many times before it got as far as it did!
I am gobsmacked by this case. There are no words.
Rest in peace to all those who passed.
I hope that the survivors are able to find peace. 😢
Sad to say this, but shame on the justice system! All they had to do was privately follow him. Idk the laws in Australia, but wire tapping, PI’s, or even just a police officer in a long term stakeout, could’ve saved many lives. They should’ve listened to her, and done everything possible. The judiciary connections alone, should’ve been enough. 😢🤯
Side note, he reminded me of John Wayne Gacy 🤢
"That's my congregation." 'Oh that's the connection'. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! She's been warning you multiple times. Listen genius, had you listen to her from day 1, this wouldn't happen. The level of incompetency is beyond comprehension.
Wow, to live for 40yrs in fear is heart breaking and mind blowing
Thank goodness DNA was introduced so the Blanchard family and others can finally live in peace..
RIP to all of his victims..What a Monster
Useless idiots . They knew all the time who he was and were not able to get a search warrant and find smth to put him away for good.
INCREDIBLE !!!!!
No. Idiot, there’s a thing they need first - evidence and they had none. Are you really this stupid that you don’t understand how the law works? There seem to be an awful lot of you ignorant, uneducated morons making inane, inaccurate comments on this vid. Just shush you brainless person, you’re tedious in the extreme.
I will never understand how this woman gave up her daughter to a murderer, I could never. I mean she did save lives by doing that but I just don’t know how she did it.
The emotional torture perpetuated by years of state assisted harrassment will do that to you
Australian law is the weakest I've ever seen. Lord have mercy.
They couldn't understand why I refused to speak to them except to tell them to get off the property!!
this is the most incredible case
This is so sad, all those lives lost because of this selfish heartless man. I can’t imagine how this woman feels thinking that if she hadn’t married this evil man how different life would have turned out for her 😢
She just has to focus on the good - Trudy!
I think police could do better...i mean, come on.
Right they could have simply followed him the day before and day of him going to court and they could have stopped it much much sooner
Look at New York
If they had brains yes.
This was infuriating to watch. The U.S. definitely has poor law enforcement and a terrible justice system but what took place in this story is absolutely egregious. The victims need to be compensated by the government. Crazy.
WOW, such a brave kid !
DNA has been both a blessing for the victims and their families and a curse for the perpetrators of horrific crimes
This one guy controls everyone out of fear and nobody could stop him? Kind of amazing
He was a government worker after all
100% Alpha
This is why women don't leave abusive relationships because they never stop tormenting them
Way too long to catch this murderer. 👀SHAMEFUL
Just discovered your channel, and very much enjoying your content!! Keep up the great work!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
They caught up late but they did. Rot in hell.
R.I.P. to all those who succumbed to this man's deadly hands.
I haven't heard this story before and I'm surprised. He is so evel.
My heart goes out to her. She has been throw hell and back. ❤❤❤
This case is infuriating,Andrea pleaded over and over with authorities and nothing was done.Tha FKR even in photos and footage has a haughty, arrognt smugness to him...loathsome monster.
