Barnes is spot on, defense always shifts over and leave the switch relatively unmarked and then shuffle back over IF they switch it and they did but Walker gave himself too much to do or was uncharacteristically slow to get out to cucarella, the literal fact the cross came in, means he misjudged the needing to leave no gaps in the center vs marking Cucarella. He looked tired, should have been rested more in the games leading up, lack of rotation and resting of him has cost him, should have been able to get out the groups and easy KO run without having to tax the first teamers and sap their tanks.

John makes some good points here. The success of the Premier League doesn't help the England team because the reason why it sells the world over is because it has an exciting array of different styles up against each other and as John says that means when you get to England the players aren't used to the way of playing. I think it was the dutch back in the 70s where most of their teams played the same way so it was easy at international level. Closest England got was when Ron Greenwood picked an England team made up mostly of Liverpool players because of their success. I think England's biggest problem now though is that the best players if the Premier League are generally the foreign ones.

  • @not2busy

I think England had played better than in past matches. Not by a lot, but there seemed like they were more solid overall. But I agree a lot with what Mr Barnes has said. Most of the so-called performance analysis so far seems born more out of disappointment than real analysis. Mr Barnes seems to have actually looked at things for exactly what they were and makes a lot of sense. England were within 5 minutes away from going into extra time, in the finals, against the team that beat other strong nations to get there. FourFourTwo also has a good analysis as to the tactics used by both teams.

England have never respected the number 6 position. They played gerrard and lampard over Carrick when you simply could have just played all three. But carrick should have been the first name on the team sheet. And they have never been able to keep the ball with intention. We have a long way to go. Bellingham is a Fellani and mctominay kind of player, runs around alot, a nuisance and gets in the box with a gl every now and then but because he's so trained in media and his PR is so good he wasn't allowed to be dropped! Its baffling he was played in a playmaker position where Kane should of been. Southgate sacrificed everything for commercial reasons

As long as the media gets involved in the squad selection and who starts for England, then England won't win anything for a long-term. Most managers also reward their players after putting the team in the final. Watkins deserved to start against Spain in the final. He can press better than Kane. Foden or Bellingham should have been benched for Gorden. Spain is better in keeping the ball, but England could have used counter attack to hurt them.

JB spot on... both goals came from Saka side... yet he is not even in the the frame... his left back crossed and Saka is no where.... said all along Bowen a better option because he tracks back... Saka good going forward but he is not good tackling back.... he is an out an out right winger....NOT a midfielder as was Sterling...
JB is correct Walker was superb and especially in the final.

Toda la razón. Saka en vez de apoyar y defender por su banda, se estubo tomando varios daikiris en el otro extremo del campo. Walker, hizo lo que tenía que hacer.

Reality is when WALKER retires England are screwed because in an attacking sense he's poor, but defensively he's the only difference in how we travel so far in recent tournaments! His MONSTER pace and recovery bails England out making last ditch blocks or locking down other nations best attackers! People talk about the goals against Spain have no idea in how passing accurately at the right time with the right tempo destroys any fast or competent defender! People forget what prime Barca was doing lol. Look at Rio and Vidic in that final lol

The last decent tournament was Russia 2018, this England team should have dominated world football the last six years, it was their turn in the cycle, but they didnt have a manager capable of taking advantage of that fact and filling the vacuum, consequently just a few near misses in an era they should have done what Spain did earlier in the century, sadly Glenn hoddle was the last manager who played an England side worth watching.

I love Barnes however Kyle Walker is the weak link. He is negligent at the far post. Got exposed in the World Cup 2018 by Croatia perosic and by Williams in the final. Reece James is the best defensive right back but he is too injury prone
