I’ve never seen a better comeback amidst that sort of pressure from 3 sets down against a Phil Taylor at the peak of his darting powers ! Sensational match , full of drama and it was in a Saturday night into the bargain 👍🏻🍺
The match that made Mardle a legend. What happened in the semis doesnt take away from this achievement. Wayne Mardle is one of the very few players who can say they eliminated a prime Phil Taylor at the World Championship.
This was truly historic, as it was the first time that Phil Taylor ever failed to advance to the World Finals.

I think everyone knows mate. What a waste he proved to be on the darts circuit. Wayne should have won it in 2008!

I asked him about it on Twitter and he admitted it was fault, he just felt he had to turn up to beat Kirky and the rest as they say is history. Wayne was the best player at that championship until the semis
Yeah, that's really sad - if he would have beaten Shepherd, he would also have had a chance against Part - and winning the World Championship would finally have made him one of the best in the world and boosted his career. Instead, right after this greatest moment of his career, he entered a downward spiral from which he never recovered. Would love to see him make a comeback one day, but that seems highly unlikely as he is probably happy with his job as a commentator.

That was Mardle’s final. I said at the time Shepherd would beat him in the semi, but I didn’t think Mardle’s career would go into free fall after that. A great dart player who couldn’t leave the showman part out when the game started, like Peter Wright does

Yeah, that's the tragedy of it - he had the highlight of his career but then it turned into a downward spiral from which he never recovered. Would love to see this awesome bloke make a comeback one day, he certainly would have a chance since he's still only 46 (three years younger than Wright and two years younger than Gary Anderson), so he still could have a career in professional darts, but he's probably satisfied with his job as a commentator.

The resolution is bad so you can't see it for certain, but yeah, it looks like he hit the 5. Lucky for him.
@@torstenscholz6243one things for certain. He would never own up to it. Frequently endorses gamesmanship and cheating in his commentary.
If Mardle didn’t have to play Taylor and MVG or Tabern put him out like they should’ve done, I think Mardle would’ve won the title that year. I don’t know why but he seemed to think that he only had to turn up to beat Shepherd. Just goes to show averages mean absolutely nothing. Shepherd didn’t average over 88 the whole tournament.

bigsky Ryza look at Taylor’s record against ANYBODY over that 20 year period ! That was the first time he’d lost before the Final in fifteen years of the PDC Worlds so took some performance from a ‘Pub Player’ considering no one had been able to do it during all that time
Pretty much everyone has a rubbish record v phil, except mvg but even he is about 8 or 9 matches behind i think.
Everyone has a trash record against Taylor, that's just how good the guy was.
