Dusty and Hannah! I'm so excited for your projects ! I learned a ton about the food forest concept from you in the latest N-Land, (and swales! ) Keep going! And using herbs and such as natural pesticides is the way to go . Look into biodynamic farming- uses lunar cycles to guide you on best time for harvesting/planting and also how to make teas/ tinctures to enrich the soil. Keep us posted!

I share your ideas about land use. We live in Northwest Arkansas on sloped (20 or so degree slope) red clay "soil" with plenty of rocks. My best purchase was a laser level so I could tell what the terrain was really doing.
I've had a hard time finding dirt guys who understood swales. They are used to high-side ditches to control erosion, and that's about it. One guy even tried to tell me you couldn't control water, it goes where it wants. I showed him some pictures of places the Incas terraced in the Andes 1,000 years ago, and told him I wanted a swale version of that. He still never really got it. I ended up buying a mini-excavator and digging them myself. I also made a spreadsheet to calculate the area of rainwater collection for the keyline swales. I'll be happy to share it if you're interested.
For trees, I started with Apples. I also started with cages and had the grass problem. Early on, I had some type of fungus to deal with and had to spray with Neem oil. It seems to work. Since the cages, I have switched to tree sun tubes and a simple electric fence. I use the mini to scoop out a hole, plant the tree, lay down ground fabric to slow the grass and follow with a 3" layer of tennis ball size rocks from a local quarry to keep the voles from hurting the trunks. Lastly I slide the tree tube over the top. Between the single smooth-wire electric perimeter fence and the tree tubes, I think the trees will hold their own without anything more by me. There are some good videos on the tubes and deer fencing.
I don't know if you planted anything around the house, but I found a cheap deer deterrent that seems to work well. It's a solar powered motion sensing sprinkler. The deer were decimating my roses and garden until I bought a couple of these. Now, no more deer damage. The biggest downside is the sprinklers cost about $50 each. That's a small price to pay to avoid seeing all of your roses petal-less when you go out in the morning to stroll with your dog.
Great videos. I really enjoy watching what you're doing.
