  • A Tye Dye Movie By Brain O'Donnell Starring Actual "Deadheads" "Not The Way The Press Portrays Us"
Covering 10 years, this 60 minute art documentary takes an inside look at the artisans, magicians, musicians, and lunatics that make up this cult of devotees, deadicated to a band that originated in 1965. Why these fans leave their schools, families and jobs to be part of these ritualistic tribal celebrations of dance, drugs and community, is a 20th century American cultural phenomenon captured here in this time capsuled video tape.

This is the best Grateful Head documentary yet! Master editing. It takes us from the street, with a gatekeeper of wisdom, to the Dead Lot, to the show. It's just like being there again. Walking through the perimeter of guitarists and vendors, to then enter the drum circle. Which then leads past more vendors and, finally, to the band itself. Recognizing people from the '89 tour is a heartfelt bonus. Especially the piano player, Johnny, at ~54:00. I would listen to and watch him play hundreds of times at the Pike Street Market, where I was vending apples and almonds for a few years.

I love watching and listening to people play music. Even if the guitar is out of tune, or they aren't great, it's still nice to see. Most of these musicians are playing from the heart and it shows.

I love this SO MUCH, it encapsulated so much of the jovial gypsy spirit of the nomadic tribal bohemians that were the cultural phenomenon that is everything that The Grateful Dead symbolized and that which it was born from. I just love the energy that this documentary exhibits, with it's soundtrack consisting pretty much of "music from The Lot". And all it's weird and magical majesty!

With our loss of love we lose our bonds with the beauty around us and as long as we stay on this narrow path we will eventually lose all humanity eventually turning back into animals who fight for everything... wake up, look at the happiness of these times then you'll realize you aren't happy at all your just trying to survive in a vile society... Let's go back to when life made sence!!!

I was a bit young so I didn’t get on the bus until 92 but wow what a ride. I know people say I didn’t get to see the Dead in their prime and I agree but the 26 times I saw them which 20 or those were in 95 but they all meant the world to me and Dayz Between is as good of a song that Hunter and Garcia wrote in my opinion. I love all their music. Blessed to have seen what I saw.

Brian, please release this on DVD if possible! My VHS copy from probably 20+ years ago won't last forever!! I think Heads would love to have this in order to reminisce. My 1st show was 7/4/89 in Buffalo. We parked in a neighbor's backyard across from Rich Stadium. Then my life changed!!!

Mine was same place, same date, but 3 years before with Bob Dylan and Tom Petty/Heartbreakers for just another 4th of July...hard to believe it was 31 years ago.I was 17 and on a bus from Toronto,Canada with 14$Can and a half ounce of black hash which I was able to trade for everything I needed.I ended up meeting my first love on the bus ride home...I`m still friends with her...maybe someday she will come out west, but we will always have Buffalo in 1986 when Liberty Saluted the Dead...Seen a few other shows, but that one was my first and favorite show of all time.

All I can say is how thankful I am to witness that circus.watching the energy flow out of everyone at rfk 93 and called althea down on the field with a dude and his girlfriend from Maryland that smoked me out w some strait out sk1. Hopefully them Maryland folks remember that too. Thanks boys for the one and only experiences that the luckiest humans on earth got to witness. Still a hippie Gipsy at heart. Forever stamped

It was a "shelter" for kids in between court placements. Wouldnt have been so rough if any of us knew what was going on or what was going to happen to us. I smile so I guess it was cool. God bless deadheads with dope hidden in their art supplies!

I only knew about Truckin and Touch of grey, in those years. But 4 years ago I rediscovered what the Grateful Dead really were through my manager recommending them to me. Which he is 6 years older than me. I love the Grateful dead now, their music is incredible! In 1988 I was a freshman in high school. I don't know why dead heads had a bad rap back then, our high school near Chicago did not really have too many people wearing tidi shirts
