The first time I walked in to Floores it was after marching in the Helotes Cornyval parade with the Pat Neff Jr.High band. After marching through Od Town we would all go into Floores and belly up to the bar and get some Barq’s Root Beer and Nehi’s. I was probably 12. Later on it would be the John Marshall High School reunions that were held there. Then we bellied up to the bar for real beer. Many times. I got to see Willie and the family there one time and now I get to say Willie Nelson signed my Fishing Texas hat at Floores Country Store. And I got to play there once with my band the S.A. Blue Cats and some gospel brunches with Miss Neesie and the Earfood Orchestra. I pretty much grew up at Floores. The first honky tonk I ever walked in to. Way too many stories. I could write a book.
I lived in SA for 12 years. I lived not too far down Bandera Road and would visit Floore's and El Chapparal once in a while. In 2000, I got transferred to Utah. Funny as it may be, I met Mike Ryan at a local country bar here in Ogden Utah called The Outlaw. Mike puts on a good show! Goes to show you just how small a world we live in. 🌎
This is crazy. This is literally 2 miles down the road. I live by Shaenfield and 1560. I’ll be going to Government Canyon next week. I could walk there if I wanted to.
While in Dallas on business, in '03 or '04. I planned a weekend trip here to see James McMurtry at Floore's. I was lucky enough to see Scott Miller and the Commonwealth open the show, and had a second favorite band! What a great trip, the people, the town and the show are etched in my mind. One of the bartenders gave me a poster promoting the show that hung on the wall of my friends barber shop until his closing during covid. Love your videos Chet!
We live in Georgetown now. But, used to live in Helotes, way back when 1604 was still a 2-lane road. I can't believe how much it has grown after 2+ decades.
Thank you for this video! This is where I live. Loved watching your take on the town. Now I need to go to el chaparral for dinner! Really love Charlie and he knew my parents as we would always go eat there prior to living in Helotes when I was young. There was a race track ( horses) in Bandera and we would eat all eat there when heading from a day of betting on the ponies!
I'm in Leon Valley, next door to Helotes. Whenever my out of State friends visit, I take them to Helotes. ❤ Great town. Floores Country Store is an excellent venue for live music!! I saw Dwight Yoakam there!!
I've been to Helotes several times to visit my brother-in-law and family. It is an interesting place. Deer sometimes walk up to you in hill country (or a couple did to me). El Chap is everything you said it is. You cannot go wrong eating there. I'll be there again for Thanksgiving this year 2024. Can't wait!
I have the pleasure to live here and we love it. Used to be lots of cattle ranchers everywhere, where stands schools and shopping centers now, but it still has a small town feel yet with everything convenient nearby. I love that Government Canyon is close by and we’re right on the edge of the Hill Country. We can get away from civilization in literally minutes! All these places you visited are some of my favorites. My children worked at El Chap many years ago, back when the restaurant was in the old house! Charlie was always such a great guy, even giving my kids a ride home as he lived up the street from us. Thanks for visiting Helotes! There is more that goes on here, such as the Cornyval, and the Highland Games and more but that’s for your next visit maybe!
Hi Chet, Sister is visiting from Fresno Ca (4th trip to Austin in a year and a half since I moved here from Hawaii ) and we have followed many of your suggested road trips and loved every one. Now we are off to Helotes on Saturday! Great big Mahalo to you and yours.....keep em comming.
Wow, been in TX since 75. I know the Hill County and San Antonio but this was a wonderful surprise. Gotta ck out Floore and Government Canyon. Thank you!
Just north of helotes is pipe creek tx where the best place to relax is Als Hideaway . Awesome cabins lovely pool with an fantastic staff . Check it out . When you go say howdy to Gordon Jennifer and MeMaw
Several years ago asked a local SA resident where the best Mexican food was, they said El Chaparral in Helotes. Have been enjoying it since then, so glad you went by!
We bought a house about ten minutes away over 3 years ago. Only been there once in that time as we live in Japan. Love that place, but you did miss a couple of the best bars in town.
I live 5 minutes from Helotes and have never explored half of these spots. El Chaparral is the bomb though. The Dino tracks don't look like anything. This is a very well produced and edited show.
I just looked up El Chaparral and I’ve driven by there many, many times but I didn’t know its reputation. Gonna take the family especially now that one of our favorite Mexican restaurants has closed. Thanks.
❤ I will be buying the "Texas Secede" "Let's go Brandon" and "45" coffee beans for all my friends and family this Christmas! And by then I'll also be buying the "47" coffee beans. ❤
Helote comes from the Spanish word for corn cob. Elote as we know it is a specific corn dish. Corn is also Maiz in Spanish when referring to the corn kernels or using the ingredient in a dish.
Definitely refers to corn. Every year in Helotes (which is literally across the street from my neighborhood) they have the Cornyvale and there’s corn cob designs everywhere.
If you pronounce Bexar as "Bear", then why don't you pronounce Texas as"Tear" (No, not like you are all lcryin', more like you are gonna rip something to shreads). Try "beh HAR", rhymes with jar.
Absolutely disappointed in Daytrippers featuring a business with coffees named "Texas Secede", "Let's Go Brandon", and "45". I guess true colors come through eventually.
I agree somewhat and voiced my dissatisfaction to the staff. If you wouldn’t print the words “Let’s Go Brandon” is supposed to represent on your coffee, maybe it’s inappropriate to do the dog whistle. But I will say that after trying the cream puff and coffee, that it is outstanding. So I say let’s all go there and just keep harassing them (politely) about the politics. Maybe coffee is something that can bring us all together after all.
That's one of the reasons I will go there! In fact, I'll go there every week for a month! And I'll buy those coffee beans for all of my friends and family!

Our daughter started working at Texas Grounds the day y'all filmed. We have been waiting on the show to come out. Loved it!!

BEST Zip Lines EVER! Scenery is Awesome!!!
Thank you Chet and Daytripper crew. I'm going to visit Helotes as soon as the heat breaks! (It's August 2024)
I honestly believe that yall make everyone wish we lived in every town yall visit. 👍
We went to visit this past weekend thanks to your episode ! The zip line was so badass.
Love Floore store. I have seen Willie there. 1978..

We went for soccer tournament and it was my first time learning about it. Cool place.

We actually watched this one in Abilene! You always make me so darn hungry on these shows.

That food looks delicious Chet
Awesome video everything from the production to the flow. It’s a freaking masterpiece. Great work guys.

The El Chapparal on 1604/Redland isn’t very good & they are stingy with giving out extra salsa.
@@mare8371 I agree completely, the original in Helotes is MUCH better!!
We bought a house about ten minutes away over 3 years ago. Only been there once in that time as we live in Japan. Love that place, but you did miss a couple of the best bars in town.
I live 10 miles from Helotes but hadn’t heard about ElChap but now that I have I’m definitely going.
Go early. The wait is worth it, but it is always busy.

Government canyon used to be my backyard. Lived out there before it was a state natural area was just open land.
That El Chap is sure looking good right about now...🤤
We love Helotes
Home… literally, my house is on the Daytripper!!!
As always such wonderful edutainment. Thanks, Thermos
p.s. can you get a new Texas blue Chevrolet please? That would really make my day...
We are moving there in a few weeks 🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽
It’s not that exciting and I’m from San Antonio
I grew up there! It's not as country as it used to be! San Antonio expanded too much😢
Welcome!
Oh well I’m sorry 😂 nothing exciting here haha. Unless you like traffic 🤭

Bexar county (San Antonio ,Texas) is named after San Antonio de Béxar , it is Spanish (Spain) the X is silent
Hilarious hearing him pronounce it
😊😊

Elotes sin H
Helotes is not corn lol that's 'Elotes' 😅

For the same reason we don't pronounce good and food the same way.
Because we pronounce things however we want to in Texas. Take for example San Jacinto.
No. It’s pronounced “bare” or “bear”.

Those are great names for coffee
