This was interesting. Many many moons ago when I was in home economics in grade 7 I was taught to pull a long thread down the length of the fabric we wanted to gather then do a zigzag stitch over it, keeping the thread in the middle and at the end you just pull the thread going down the middle as much or as little as you want. Works like a charm. No fancy feet needed. 😹😹😹💝🥰🤗
Ok I HATE gathering the traditional way - I''m sure I have seen the method you describe before and can't believe I have never given it a try! Thanks for the reminder x
Method 4: a wide zig-zag stitch over a length of yarn (but don't stitch over the yarn). Then, just pull the yarn to make gathers. A little less labor-intensive than two rows of straight stitches and just as even. I have to admit I still use the two-row method most often, but I do the zig-zag method when I'm feeling lazy!
Thank you Janelle for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience. I have learnt so much from you. Always a joy watching you. Remain blessed xxx
A home sewing machine is nothing like a factory sewing machine, but there is something to learn about your technique!👍 I'll share our garment factory sewing tips afterward, too! 🥰🥰
The gathering method we had to do at school back in the late 60s was to hand stitch gather, as there were only a couple of sewing machines available. Our project was to make ourselves a baby doll pyjama set, so we had to gather the sleeve hems and the shorts hem, needless to say I don’t use that method now but I did back in the day when beginning my sewing journey. ✂️🧵
Janelle, thanks so much. Your tutorials are fantastic, straight forward and clear. You're a charming model for your garments too. I'd love to make your Pansy dress and more. However, I don't know how to make adjustments on the patterns to fit my proportions: bust 29.5", waist 27", hip 35". I wonder if you could advise.
Thanks for being interested in the Pansy pattern and for your kind words! Your measurements should still work for the size 4. The Pansy pattern is quite an oversized fit though and if you did want to take it in slightly, you could use a 1” seam allowance (instead of 1cm), or you could take the sides of the template pieces in by about 1” - I hope this helps x
Thank you for sharing the 3 methods of gathering! The first method is the only one I've used but have been searching on TH-cam to find the answer to a question about using the machine method of gathering (the single layer). With the machine method, using the machine gathering foot in this way, do I still have to option to adjust the gathers to fit the flat layer as I do with method #1? Also, I do not feel comfortable using method #2 yet because I cannot figure out how to ensure that my pattern pieces would end up being the same finished length as the pattern calls for. Thanks for your reply in advance and I hope my question makes sense (smile).
My preferred gathering method is to set my stitch length to the longest one, and set my tension to the highest one (like what you did in the last method) but I just use a regular sewing foot. Very fast
Thanks fortve tutorial. I am beginner. I used a gathering foot I am not sure how to adjust the garthering to fit the to part of my dress without breaking the thread. Can I loosen tve gatherings ? Please help.

Haha yay I’m glad to hear that! With all the gathering I share in tutorials this video has been a long time coming 😆
Thankyou I just bought my gathering foot this is more information than I had in my sewing machine manual on how to use it.

Great ideas Janelle
Omg thanks soooo much for the tips I needed to see this video I struggle with gathering
Great video, thank you!
Unfortunately I don’t understand how with method two or three I can get the correct length of gathered fabric I’ll need?
Can you control the amount of gathers using the gathering foot? So it fits correctly?
No not really, but you can change up the amount of gathering by changing the stitch length. The longer the stitch length the more full the gathering 😊
THANK YOU! Extremely helpful!
I’m glad you found it helpful ☺️
Thanks so much, this was super helpful ❤
This helped so much thank you 🙏
Beautiful your work good idea
You come back
Loved it. Thank you so much ❤

When you use this method, is it possible to adjust the gathers afterwards? Like if you wanted them tighter or looser?
@@jhjln8712 yes! Just don’t backstitch
@@AllycatlovesAG thanks!
Yay second comment and top 10 likes. Love this channel. Best to you and your family. Thanks for making this video.
Aw thank you, that means a lot 🧡
omg loveeee this!! thank you for these videos!!
Thank you for your content x
Appreciate the tips!
Thank you
When you sew the gathered edge to a regular edge, is it as simple as adjusting the tension to accommodate the bulk? Or is there more to it?
I don’t change the tension at all when stitching the gathered fabric to non-gathered fabric 😊
@@RoseryApparel Thanks!
brilliant, thanks!

thank u so much!
Hi what kind of fabric you used?
Hi! Does anyone know if this works well for muslin or single cotton gauze? I’m new to sewing and trying to make a milk maid dress! Thank you 😊
Not sure about the second method, but method 1 and 2 should work for most fabric types 😊
