This video had a lot of interesting facts (although, it's always good to check the source and age of the quoted data). According to 2021 data from the UN, the top 10 countries with the highest "intentional homicide rate per 100,000 residents" are... 1) Jamaica- 52 2) South Africa- 42 3) St Lucia- 39 4) Honduras- 38 5) Belize- 31 6) St Vincent and the Grenadines- 31 7) Bahamas- 29 8)Trinidad and Tobago- 29 9) St Kitts and Nevis- 29 10) Mexico- 28 (Venezuela was at about 50/100,000 in 2017, but it had dropped to 19 in 2021 and I was shocked to see that the US Virgin Islands was at 49 in 2012, the last year they released data). Some other homicide statistics I thought you would find interesting....Mexico has 8 out of the top10 most dangerous cities in the world, ranging from a homicide rate of 73.40 homicides per 100,000 residents for the #9 city, Uruapan, to an absolutely mind-boggling rate of 196.6/100,000 for the #1 city, Zamora.

I guess there are a lot of scrubby bush-like trees (obviously the definition of 'tree' vs 'bush' would have a bearing on it) but Australia has a huge area. Again, many of the trees in Russia and Canada would be relatively small pine trees, but then Canada and particularly Siberia are vast.

Find it super interesting how impactful the relationship of humans and dogs have shaped both of our histories etc.

The middle-aged one is a bit of a misnomer though. People act like life expectancy is the same thing as a normal lifespan. It's not, it just describes how risky it is to live in a particular country. A country with high levels of infant deaths will have a lower average life expectancy. But once you survive into adulthood, you're not likely to drop dead at 55 because that's the life expectancy. Obviously poorer healthcare of public safety might make you more likely to die early, but it doesn't mean everyone should only count on living to 55, just that lots of unlucky people never even make it that far.

Next to extreme temperatures, humidity levels should be calculated in earth's extreme climates, as the combination of both temperature and humidity takes climates to even more extremes. And maybe you should take wind chill (or the lack of) into account as well when it comes to experiencing extreme climates. This also demonstrated how evolution works: all life on earth is specialised to the climates that are available here. When, for instance, combining a temperature above 37°C with a humidity above 65-ish % relative humidity, you (a mammal) start to drown while breathing as your lungs are the coldest part the air touches and water will condense in your lungs. Your body actually refuses to breath in these conditions if values are increased as it feels the same as drowning. You also start to heat up while breathing as you don't loose any bodyheat anymore that way. Typically, this circumstance doesn't occur on our planet, hence we (mammals) didn't need to adapt to it.

The first fact about life expectancy is a bit misleading. Life expectancy at birth in can be very low in poor countries, but this is skewed by a high infant mortality rate. Once children make it past age 5 the figure for life expectancy can increase by 10-15 years, so a more accurate "middle age" in the central african republic is probably somewhere in the 30s.

Mauna Kea only stands 13,796 feet above seal level, but the mountain extends about 19,700 feet below the Pacific Ocean. Over half of it is submerged. The Nauru vs Vatican City vs Monaco etc. thing is getting into nitty-gritty definitions of what a country is. VC is an independent state under international law, but it isn't a country. Monaco is a city state; technically a type of country, but one that exists entirely within a single city. Nauru is neither, it has land outside the city walls. Also, Nauru is a Republic, which none of the other small countries are. VC is a monarchy, Monaco is a principality.

meeting in silence... what a massive emotinal encounter was. I want to see again and I stumbled upon the music version.... what a sacrilege! Put an idiotic pop song on this beautiful silence. Why? Its like shiting on Mona Lisa

The world's economy is a Pandora's Box of existentialism.
But I can vouch that Luxembourg is indeed filthy rich. My visits there have been an overload of luxury, particularly the wine. The amount of wine that gets passed around at gatherings has damn near killed me multiple times .... and I'm Irish.
Coming back from that, you start to vividly feel how much you and everyone around you struggles to afford things.

Nauru is an interesting island. They used to have a decent GDP from the mining and export of phosphates. The minerals and money's all gone now.
It put them in a bad enough position that they agreed to shelve Australian asylum seekers for a while.

I have only watched the first one so far but I immediately thought they made the same misleading conclusion as some do when looking at time periods long ago. If the child mortality rate is high that means average age is low but by mathematical necessity those that survive must live longer than the average. Googling tells me Central African Republic has the third highest child mortality rate in the world (at over 7%). So looking at only the group of people who actually grow up then you would not expect to die at 53 because that number is artificially low due to those dying at, or near, birth. At 7% I'm not sure the picture changes drastically but with child mortality rates throughout history at up to 50% this can make you draw very wrong conclusions sometimes.

I don't get why California having double the GDP of the Nordics is "ridiculous". California is an international business hub. It also has 1.5x the population of the Nordics. Neither unexpected nor crazy.

Vatican City is a city state, not a Country. So, Nauru is the smallest country.

  • @Peatingtune

Nauru is indeed the smallest country in the world if you don't count European city-states ("microstates") like The Vatican, Monaco etc. as proper countries. I don't personally count The Vatican City as a "proper" country because there is no such thing as a permanent Vatican citizen. All Vatican citizens are temporary appointees (and their spouses/children in applicable cases) who lose their citizenship and leave at the conclusion of their appointments. I would personally count Monaco since it has jus sanguinis citizenship laws and people who are born, raised and live their entire lives there, although I agree there are arguments to be made whether a sovereign city state truly counts as a "proper" country. By my reckoning that makes Nauru #2 smallest with a strong case for first place.

I'm a bit bothered every time he says "kilometers squared". It's not the same thing as "square kilometers". A million kilometers squared wouldn't fit on the face of Earth (or any of the planets in the solar system for that matter.
