  • Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’ll be discussing the history of wizard medicine as we know it.
When a witch or wizard uses their skills to heal themselves or another, it is referred to as a specific branch of witchcraft and wizardry known as healing magic. Although it can be performed by just about anyone with magical abilities who has knowledge relating to this field, those who are properly trained wizarding medical professionals are referred to within the Wizarding World as Healers and Mediwizards. The primary responsibility of both Healers and Mediwizards is to tend to the wounded and treat the sick. And, from what us Muggles can tell, they appear to be the magical equivalent of doctors, nurses, and medical health professionals in our world. It’s unclear whether or not there are specific ranks within this branch of magic-but considering Madam Poppy Pomfrey, a Healer at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, was noted to be a matron, it stands to reason that there is some sort of seniority system in place throughout this field, as there is with our Muggle doctors and nurses.

Perhaps the second or third worst educational offense at Hogwarts is that Dumbledore and Madam Pomfrey never saw fit to establish an extra-curricular “Wizarding First Aid” course. Snape has potions, of course, but with how many broken bones and scraps and bruises students get, it would be more helpful for students to know how to tend to injuries to make them bearable until more serious healing can be done.
Remember when Ron’s leg broke and all Lupin could do was conjure a splint, or when Ron got splinched and Hermione could only use dittany to close the wound?
Even if it was only offered as an extra for NEWT students, like apparition, it would probably help more wizards and witches in the long run to learn that stuff while in school.

Wonder how many students pursue a career in healing, would it require more knowledge than other careers like aurors and curse breakers?

Yes it would as it clearly stated in this video

I thought there was going to be a mention of how Molly Weasley was appalled by the fact that they used Muggle techniques like stitches on Arthur when he was attacked by nagini. How the wizarding world views Muggle medicine compared to theirs.

Mr. Weasley had stitches that never seemed to mend the snake attack. If it was the effect of the venom or the fact he is not muggle is unclear on why the muggle cure did not work.

Heard about the doctor who fell in a well? He should've tended to the sick and left the well alone

It would have been amazing if Harry or Hermione carried a vial of Pheonix tears and maybe that could have helped heal Snape or dobby's wounds

Phoenix tears can be replaced by spiritual healing that may be embraced through the genuine Christian spirituality and literature or maybe any genuine religious school and scripture ? just a theory.. who knows..

So sad that magical healers could have not cure the Longbottoms, Neville would have grow up in a loving home.

@@bailatwerski2951 I think it is that what the Cruccio does is to magically destroy the brain if/when a person is exposed for a long period to being Cruccio-ed; since is a curse and not just a spell. But I'm speculating 100% here.
But seems like a good way for healers to experiment on that healing magic to restore torture with happiness. Like to find an effective counter curse /spell for torture. They should try that at St. Mungos and see what happens.

Could something have been done to save Severus after Voldy had Nagini mess him up? Like, could a vial of phoenix tears poured onto the wound in his neck have neutralized Nagini's venom and allowed time for him to be treated by Madame Pomfrey? I'm just saying since it worked for Harry when he got a basilisk fang in his arm in his second year and Fawkes saved him by allowing his tears to drip onto the wound, it makes sense that Sev could have been saved that way too. Basilisks have venom too, btw, tho Idk the difference in toxicity between basilisk and Maledictus venom.
