THANK U! I totally agree with u. I mean, I absolutely love Rosario Dawson's acting and all but everytime I see Rent the movie, when Roger says ''U look like 15'' I'm like 'no she doesn't'... Vanessa is the first one I'm seeing playing Mimi that actually makes me believe Mimi's 19. And it is not something look-related.
Gotta say, maybe its just my interpretation but...Mimi kinda IS childish. She's 19 years old. She acts like she's 19 years old if you listen to a lot of her dialogue (or the song 'Out Tonight': she's definitely a teenager who wanted to grow up to fast, made play at being a 'bad girl' and landed in a bad way because of it) Sure, Mimi has been through a lot more shit than most girls her age; but she's still a 19 year old who spends the majority of the play pining over the neighbour boy.
Honestly, i think Vanessa plays a wonderful Mimi i mean she isnt the Mimi in the movie nor the original play but she certainly played the shit out of this role and its not that shes childish its just that her voice is too damn high but she really isnt that bad. However, everyone is entitle to their own opinion.
vanessa did better in this song, not that that's saying much.... eh, you can't blame the poor girl. as other commenters have noted, neil did cast her, and who would turn down the role if offered it? would you? even though i'm nowhere near broadway caliber, if someone wanted me to be the lead in rent, i must admit it would be very hard for me to say no. i think she clearly enjoys the part and brings a youthful innocence to it in place of the jaded world-weariness of all the other mimis. she's not very good, but she's not as awful as she could have been.
+Julia Fontaine Tracie Thoms had been auditioning for the part of Joanne in the original cast but was rejected because of young age (the character Joanne definitely isn't 20 anymore, but she was at the time). I love how powerful her singing has become - plus, the looks on her face are simply priceless. You can tell she's an experienced actress. :D
Even if the casting isn't perfect, they did wonderfully, this song is probably the best out of all their's! And they both are looking hottttttt ahaahhaah!
Beauty4ever04 She has played Joann in 3 different versons of glee, the movie, the last broadway production in 2008 and the hollywood bowl. Probably because she does so well with the character.
The problem with Vanessa as Mimi is that she is not theatre. She is an actor and an occasional singer. People tend to push aside how hard theatre performers have it, we have to put the 3 arts together and keep them on pointe. She isn't the best for Mimi, but at the end of the day Mimi is quite a tough role to play and keep up with. Considering she is an actor mainly, she did really well in this show.
@princessvanessahsm not sure if you are serious, but Roger and Mimi have just realized that they both have AIDS, and Roger is still trying to heal from his last girl friend's suicide. He's terrified to let himself get close to anyone else and Mimi is wearing down his defenses. She's explaining that she understands and she's scared too, so after fighting with himself Roger decides to take her outside and kiss her, which Mark describes and can be seen (on stage) at the end of the song.
Its true, I felt so bad when the critics destroyed her. Live theatre is difficult and demanding. Though it does seem like Disney doctored her voice in the HSM franchise. However she isn't as bad as everyone said. Plus I think that all of the Rent songs have difficult notes in them.
its almost an allstar cast, especially now the two guys playing mark and roger had movie booms last 2012 :) ... and vanessa .. very different role from HSM, but unenexpectedly'''' she did it, ..van and her love interest looks good together :D.. oh and i wanna ask, is nicole of PCD in this cast too?
the thing is with vanessa hudgens, as adorable as she is, she's too conscious. she is a decent actress and singer and she focused too much on herself and not on the character--the feelings and the emotions. Note that Mimi was a pivotal character in the play who shows emotional depth. had Vanessa understood the complexity of it and was able to convince that she was it, it would have been more successful. The fact tht she was casted as Mimi, the producer/s believed that she could do it.
Alright, so I know that she wasn't that bad vocally here. But even just the one line of "Azt break" was just...off to me. I know I shouldn't judge just on one line, but the whole little giggle and everything just seemed so unlike Mimi to me. I don't now just my honest opinion.
A dream to be able to play mimi with Aaron... Such an amazing vocalist.
i love how when they're singing la vie boheme repeatedly at the end i can hear aaron singing it even though he's not on on stage
They did an amazing job in this song. Vanessa really played up mimi's nerves and cuteness and Aaron was just amazing! I actually love this rendition!
Aaron's voice is heavenly
Vanessa is honestly so freaking lucky my dream is to be held in the arms of Aaron Tveit
Aaron and Vanessa have amazing chemistry!!
I just have to say this...Aaron Tveit I desire you so much, you hot piece of musical performer.
i am in love with Tracie thoms note when she says "they don't know what their doing"
Vanessa and Aaron are terrific together! They made it work.
they're definitely the best looking roger and mimi i've ever seen

Vanessa would make a wonderful Disney Princess. She has the voice that would make it great.
KILL ME OH MY GOD. Aaron did SO well in this song (and the whole thing TBH)
Ok this one is great. Vanessa was horrible in Light my Candle but much better here!

I feel like lot's of people see "Vanessa Hudgens" and immediately shut her down as the HSM girl, but she's not bad at all as Mimi!
I agree. The singing may not be amazing, but she acts it beautifully. She understands the character so well.

Vanessa's better here than in "Light My Candle."
I love how they add more instrumentation than the original instrumentation!
Favorite part right here ^^^ You can see the chemistry between them
Vanessa is definitely one of the greatest celebrity ever. She's able to do EVERYTHING. I am in love with my babe
AARON TVEIT!! 😍😍😀😀😀
3 seconds in and I'm already crying. I CANNOT HANDLE RENT.
I actually thought Vanessa did alright as Mimi. I mean, she did do well here, and she have Mimi more of the innocence of a 19 year old.
OH MY GOD JOANNE IS PLAYED BY THE SAME GIRL AS IN THE MOVIE IVE NEVER BEEN SO HAPPY AND VANESSA HUDGENS IS GREAT AT THIS

Amazing job.
*rizzo and danny joke*
Even if the casting isn't perfect, they did wonderfully, this song is probably the best out of all their's! And they both are looking hottttttt ahaahhaah!
I love this song
YES BECAUSE WE LOVE YOU AARON WE LOVE YOU SO SO SO SO MUCH
pitch perfect and rent has a connecting link! yay!
vanessa looks like she's always happy. she can't help the smile
Beauty4ever04 She has played Joann in 3 different versons of glee, the movie, the last broadway production in 2008 and the hollywood bowl. Probably because she does so well with the character.
This song remember me and my bf so much
Tracie killed me with her little back girl hand motion to Nicole in the middle of her solo.
very good roger!!!!!
She's good here!
LOVE HIM XXXXXX

this is way better for Vanessa than Light My Candle
Aaron ❤️❤️❤️
Joann is literally plays every single Joann character on every version of Rent.
@princessvanessahsm not sure if you are serious, but Roger and Mimi have just realized that they both have AIDS, and Roger is still trying to heal from his last girl friend's suicide. MUCH better than Out Tonight...
It sure is :) Welcome!

Yes :)
she CAN sing
vanessa is greaat! ilove her ♥ my role model ♥♥
VANESSA I LOVE YOU!♥
is that Vanessa Hudgens? Sounds and looks like her....
vanessa's portrayal is way too sweet for mimi
aaron tviet is so perfect
its almost an allstar cast, especially now the two guys playing mark and roger had movie booms last 2012 :) ...
and vanessa .. very different role from HSM, but unenexpectedly'''' she did it, ..van and her love interest looks good together :D..
oh and i wanna ask, is nicole of PCD in this cast too?
Well they got Joanne right
tracie thoms. nuff said
Agreed.
NICE,, i cant believe i just saw this videos today, , i sure have wasted some years. haha :D
Skylar Astin
I prefere her like actress! But.. She's so beautiful! I love her :)
I don't know if I love or if I hate this version, Aaron is like, my favorite ever, but Vanessa... I just don't know...
i can't believe that's Vanessa!!!!
No I agree completely! :)
only reason im here!
@8bittrauma nope. she sounds better on the lower notes. she opens up and isn't as nasally.
I think most people are hating on Vanessa Hudgens because of her past. She actually has a good voice.
hey do you have any of the kissing scenes?
I heard Nicole designed and made it herself. Perhaps possibly so she wouldn't have to do the mooning bit while giving the outfit an update?
I Love Wayne Brady. And baby v
Isn't this the Neil Patrick Harris directed version of rent?
@XDancethrulifeX Of course Joanne is perfect. She's the same actress from the movie! ;)
This performance was better for Vanessa then some of the other ones in this show
he's great! she's alright, not terrible but not my favorite.
Skylar Astin was Mark?!
:0
Did Aaron and Vanessa kiss???
Who played Maureen and Angel in this?
+Jordan Nickel-Dubin maureen was nicole sherzinger and I'm not sure who Angel was
+Jordan Nickel-Dubin Telly Leung was Angel
like Daphne Rubin-Vega?
Is that Vanessa Hudgens?? She is absolutely stunning
I know he did in the movie.
Is that wayne brady?

Yes, that's the same Nicole Scherzinger
Vanessa is seriously wrong for this part. Sorry. And what's with the tattoos on Aaron? Did Roger had tattoos in the original rent? Curious.
Vanessa looks glassy eyes :D
Joanne is perfect. Vanessa is a decent Mimi, though her voice got kind of shaky when she did Out Tonight.
I feel like their touching is awkward...like they connected in voice but it didn't connect on a visual level..Still very well performed though!
aaron tveit! yay
I don't think she's bad...it's just singing with Aaron and actual broadway singer exposes her voice...it's doesn't blend in their harmonies
Waitwaitwait... Is that Skylar Astin?
im sorry, i had to quit this video because i could hear my heart breaking because aaron tveit.
This is probably the only song she sounds alright in.
vanessa didn't do too bad in.this one, but aaron was flawless.. yet again
I feel like someone other than Vanessa would've been a better casting choice vocally for Mimi.
look at how many likes this has.
can anyone tell me who the asian is that sings the Mimi part at the beginning of B?
@8bittrauma she can't sing musical, cause she can't sing and dance at the same time...
actually as a singer shie's pretty good.
Except the original Broadway Cast. Sadly.
Alright, so I know that she wasn't that bad vocally here. But even just the one line of "Azt break" was just...off to me. I know I shouldn't judge just on one line, but the whole little giggle and everything just seemed so unlike Mimi to me. I don't now just my honest opinion.
