What a wonderful video. Seeing Phil an Steve Mahre reminded me of my big light bulb moment in terms of skiing technique. I am Austrian, I first stood on skis, when I was 3 years old, broke my leg at age 5, like you're supposed to do, and then became a pretty decent skier, taking all of the courses up to the expert level. But skiing always seemed to feel sort of hard work still, although I was able to ski on all slopes and under full control. That was until I was at the World Cup Finals in Saalbach in 1980, at age 14, and it was not the races, which changed my world. At that event, I watched the Mahre twins numerous times just skiing freely with no gates down the slope, on which the Giant Slalom was to be held later in the week. I must have watched them going down the entire track about 5 or 6 times, and suddenly something clicked and told me "That's how you are supposed to do it". From that moment on, my skiing changed completely and was taken to a different level. Nothing felt forced anymore, everything was just smooth effortless motion. It was all about how they finished every turn still on the edges, something which carving skis obviously have made a lot easier since then. But at that time, it was mind-boggling to see it and then to be able to reproduce it. Now, if only I could have a similar experience with my golf swing. 😂

As a functional skier (safe and can go everywhere but not pretty or stylish) watching champions and other elite skiers turn is pure artistry.

Wow! What video! In my childhood, everyone wants to be Franz Klammer... he is my idol. Also a joy to see the Mahre brothers, Ken Reed and the others. The days of my childhood when I would look forward to the race weekend to see all these big names in skiing. Some of my childhood heroes. Thanks Deb, for bringing back those days!

Your videos are so much fun to watch - thank you. When I was young, watching these legends (including yourself) attack a hill was something to remember! Those cowbells jangling on the Saturday afternoon broadcast of the Wide World of Sports! And to see everyone still doing it is a testament to what a great sport it is!

I ski 100mm plus skis most days in Whistler but everyone should own a 70mm ish carver and take some lessons learning to really learn how to carve. The high edge angles, the energy the feedback is not just addititive its great for your skiing and skill development. That and once you get good on a real piste ski or race ski it forever changes how you ski for the better!

Wow !! What a treat, Debbie watching the great Franz klammer inspired me all those years ago ! Watching him in the 1976 Olympic games in Innsbruck! & Now I am a qualified level 2 Canadian ski instructor & that whole love affair started in skiing with watching Franz !! Love your channel Debbie !!!

Phil and Steve are so nice and so fun, with endless amazing stories. I'll be at their masters camp on Hood this summer! They give super intuitive advice, last summer I finally started to understand what it feels like to dynamically drive a ski through the turn (a combination of their feedback and your videos). Way back in the day when Phil and Steve were skiing on K2 Race skis I had the good fortune to attend a K2 Dealer Demo that they attended. They were absolutely down to earth friendly and spent time skiing with us. Needless to say these guys something to watch. Skiing with them is one of my favorite experiences of working in the ski industry over the last 45 years.

The White Pass turn was an exam task at one point; and here they are saying that nobody needs it in their bag of tricks. I love it!!!!
I love how their takeaway is that it was a mistake; meanwhile, coaches today are using it to teach early inclination at the top of the arc.

What a great video. My brush with greatness was in 81 or 82 skiing moguls at Bear Mountain Killington Vermont when it was the US Ski Team training ground. I was 15-16 , varsity ski team and I thought I could ski. My friend and I were slamming the moguls as hard as we could when Phil and Steve skied past us like we were standing still. I'm still a good skier, but those guys (and the others in the video and especially Deb) are amazing. Pay attention to what they say and how they ski.

Thank you. What an amazing lineup. All I was saying about fore and aft is when things get steep, hip has to go forward. This builds the stepping stone down the hill. Ps, they absolutely do ski on Mars.

Watching the skill and agility shown, especially the micro-turns at 3:48 and close calls at 0:45 and 4:20, it is obvious that the skis are an integral extension of body and mind to these experts. To mere mortals such as myself, skis are still felt to be a foreign attachment snapped to the feet.

My favorite thing as a younger skier, 30 years old, 8 seasons across 17 years(took a break during and after college bc skiing is expensive for a college kid)
is high speed carving. Big wall to wall carves, I ride a stiff wider skis with a 21m radius, and it's my favorite thing to do on the mountain.
Totally agree with Steve, always in search of that perfect turn...it keeps me coming back too! Also, I was coached by the great, "Blitz from Kitz" at Summer Ski Camps at Red Lodge. Andrel Molterer was a great Coach back in the day!

Great point Deb. Glad you posted this. I always tell my student to always move forward into your turn. Not lean forward into your turn. Using the running as a metaphor does help the athlete inclined. Many students actually do the opposite out fear.

One ski skiing, and White Pass turns have great value on our current generation of skis. It teaches inside ski awareness and control, which is critical to maintain edge angle similarity.
@@shooter7a Agree. Making the old outside ski the new inside ski before weight transfer allows you to ski a slightly shorter distance (the new inside ski is closer to the gate/pole than new outside ski) , i.e., ski faster. Also, turn transition becomes seamless.
@@KenpoOjoko I raced in the late 80s and early 90s...then stopped skiing by about 95. I started again last spring after 27 YEARS of not skiing. It is a very unique perspective to have skied at a high level on old technology skis....stopped for a long time, and started again. Coming from the 80s...I had "dumb" inside legs. I just had no feel for edge angle control for the inside leg. One ski drills have really improved my edge similarity, and transition speed as you note.
@@shooter7a Interesting. I, too, restarted skiing in 2015 after 12-year hiatus. In the 80s and 90s, I tried not to put weight on my inside ski because I couldn't trust it. But, with the shaped skis, I can engage the inside ski edge in the early part of the turn ("upside down" before the skis point to the fall line) so that the edge hold. As a result, I can do smoother turn transitions. I couldn't do that with old straight skis. :)

This is great to see so many of the icons who got me interested in skiing all in one place!
I sometimes practice "White Pass" turns on gentle terrain even if they were a mistake or something we don't need in our "bag of tricks" as Steve says. I like them because the new "inside" leg has to be fully engaged at the start of the turn and there has to be ankle flexion and shin/tongue engagement for them to work. Also the center of mass has to move down the hill and over the base of support - something so often emphasized in videos here. With so much focus in skiing and coaching on the new "outside" leg and ski, it's nice to sometimes focus on the other side too.

Hi Deb, your videos are always wonderful, and this one is a gem. Truly an incredible collection of Legends.
You make an art of giving your students what they need at the moment, and not overloading them. It is so heartwarming to see the little one incorporated so organically into presentations, hope for the future. You have an incredible eye: “No, that is not a subtle move!” You perform a valuable service to the skiing public, and I recommend your videos constantly.
I did not ever meet Franz, but did make a trip to the Tyrolian Alps with his agent Peter to study the old barn houses (1000-1500 yrs) and develop an architectural vocabulary for expression in their contribution to Mountain Village. According to locals, his skiing was jaw dropping.
The Mahre brothers inspired a generation of youth to become better skiers. As a drill, the White Pass turn helps me focus on moving fore/aft balance from the middle of the ski at the end of the turn to the front of the ski at the start of the turn, the little retraction necessary to transition. And it may help eliminate pop.
Tamara is so smooth and energetic. “Lazy” LOL.
The inter-generational difference between Franz and Bode is astounding. Really beautiful, both of them.
Steamboat has plenty of hometown legends. 50ish years ago my wife rented a room from a widow that eventually donated a park to the town to formalize a path for kids to get to school. She was active in the LRC, Ladies Recreation Club, which was, for 100 years, the social outlet for some of the oldest names in town. The Pioneer Museum is a treasure.
Steamboat is also home to a PSIA Demo team member (cross country) who, if you have not already crossed paths, I think you would enjoy.
Thank you for this skip down memory lane. It is refreshing, encouraging, to see that Legends can dial it back and enjoy sport as sport, and not just hang it up. All the best to you.

Deb! Oh my gosh! Wow! Incredible group. You just brought me back to 1983 when I was a chef at the Lodge at Vail watching these guys during the worlds. I think I remember an interview with Tamara where she said that she was looking forward to the day when she didn't have to carve every turn. It's ironic that Franz made the comment that it looked like she was lazy.
What I would have done to ski with or behind this group of Legends. Franz says I like to make the small turns like the old days wedeling. Deb... One of these days... I dream of skiing with you. By the way, conditions looked awesome.

super cool one! i am inspired to ski a narrow ski. taos looks fun, not the usual mega resort experience. hey, theyre forecasting lift service turns early next month, nov.23. ive forgotten so much skiing this summer, maybe you can do a simple drill video to help us find our balance?
Thanks Deb! Good to hear the low down on the "White Pass turn." It's in the progression at my ski school to get the inside ski edging to happen earlier. I could see it as a step towards one ski skiing, but could be about as useless as putting training wheels on a bicycle.😊

White Pass turn around is when the sign says "CHAINS REQUIRED past this point." I been working on the back thing a lot.
My go to ski every day under a 30cm powday is the Head e-race 68mm underfoot. I must be a legend too.

So glad to hear you and Franz favouring the narrower skis. Deb can I ask what your opinion is on recreational skis with raceplates on them? Quite a few manufacturers are making what they say are "world cup construction" skis fitted with raceplates but with recreational sidecuts. Are they ok for advanced to expert skiers who want to push themselves or should they be reserved for skiers with top notch technique already? Thanks!

Oh my gosh .. did those folks on the deck have ANY idea how many medals and podiums they were in the presence of? I agree with Ken Reed that short turns ARE work .. 😉 .. and Phil still totally works ski to ski, completely picking up his inside ski. Actually, you all probably do but that one sequence behind him was so textbook to watch.

Hey Deb, you talked about how narrow underfoot you like skiing, what exactly is that range 60 - 80, 70 - 90...I used to ski voekl P slalom series all the time because of narrow underfoot, and used to ski them everywhere even off piste...
Deb, can you pls explain the counter, how much and when. I noticed it can be used to control speed- less counter=more speed on the curving arc, more counter= better grip edge but less speed

How about instead of hiking Mt Hood this summer you come to Little Cottonwood Canyon and invite all your friends for a few days lapping Main Chute, Little Chute and Perla's. Nearly 900 inches have fallen this year and so far Baldy has been open for a grand total of 2 days.
