What a treat! My two favorite youtube channels both together! A newbie to gun ownership, my main goal is to preserve our rights to own firearms and to hunt, and to improve the image of responsible gun owners and hunters. Thank you both for sharing a wealth of information and insight!
Ron saying "I watched your channel and said 'wow, this guy knows what he's doing'" is quite an honor. I love both these guys and it was nice to see that them get along so well and genuinely like and respect each other.
I'm not sure why some people dislike Ron's guest so much, maybe he gored someone's sacred ox, but to each his own. Jim seems to give his honest opinion about the things he reviews; I don't get the sense that he's a shill, and he doesn't hold himself out to be an expert. The same goes for Ron, who has tons of real-world hunting experience, but is honest enough to publicly admit when he is wrong or doesn't know something. Thanks Ron, this was a good interview.
Ron, I need you and Jim to ABSOLUTELY do more podcast!. I imagined a campfire conversation from watching you guys! You two complement each other!! I watch both of your channels, but when you two get together there something magical about the podcast. Thanks for the wisdom and words!!!
I think the trail from the bullet is a vapour trail due to the low pressure in the path of the bullet , similar to a fighter jet wing tips creating the same effect ,
Wow you both went above and beyond expectations. You guys work great together. It's pleasant to see the young and the old agree on so many things. I'm in the old category as well Ron so please don't be offended. Thanks guys!
Talking about Copper Bullets... I got into solid coppers because of 300blk. Shooting subs or supers solid copper expanders have been great. I took 3 deer this year with 125gr Makers Bullets. I have picture of a piece of meat that the bullet passed through. You could see where the 3 prongs cut through it and its around .75 of inch diameter and we lost very little of the meat. I had another deer that I broke the upper leg, took out both lungs, and caught the bottom of the heart, while also taking out the far side leg. This doe went 80+ yards on her chest before she piled up against a tree in heavy brush.
Old Guy here. I have been using a Wilson case/ headspace gauge.( for ever) Before and after case resizing and alteration. It speaks volumes, imo It replicates chamber dimensions. It is a reliable way of sorting cases.
Hi Ron, I watch and enjoy your shows. I am the head engineer for Berger Bullets and ammunition and a member of the R&D team for Vihtavuori 37:0737:10 , Lapua and SK. So I understand a lot about what you are talking about, you do a very good job of discussing these technical issues in every day common language. In your discussion about lead poisoning of raptors, there is a simple explanation for the observation that there is a lot of issues for birds but not much on mammals. Birds have a gizzard which grinds the lead into very small particles, a mammal does not. Lead poisoning occurs when the lead is in a small enough particles to pass through the small intestines and get into the blood stream. So mammals pass the lead and birds digest the lead.
Hopefully Jim realizes who he is talking with during this podcast. Ron is a legend. A well respected outdoor writer, hunter, shooter, and a great story teller with an unlimited amount of knowledge, experience, and character. I watch Backfire often but I’m all ears with Ron. Thankful for Ron reaching out to the younger generation with Jim and Who Tee Who.
Who tee who is NEVER going to be a legend, I can't stand his IGNORANCE. you REALLY need to find others to learn from. Much like Hickock 45 "reviews" you learn ABSOLUTELY NOTHING from him. His pitch, "this is a great gun, go buy some ammo from federal and buds gun shop". -- oh, and let's smoke pot.... 100% USELESS. Guys doing presentations, calling it a review, even Ron does that a bit much. (He has to sell NEW crap to keep up with what people want).
I wasn't sure if I was going to watch this one. Boy, am I glad I did. This is one of the best guncast shows That I have seen. Great 2023 perspectives and I agree with just about all of it. Definite thumbs up.
Talking about penetration, or bullet expansion, and an animal running a mile, sometimes they just have the will to live. The old timers used to say it has a lot to do with the moon phase. I can't confirm that, but I can say that an animal with an entrance hole and an exit hole will bleed OUT better than an animal that has one hole and the blood fills the cavity. I have never lost an animal shot with a Barnes bullet. As matter of fact I have yet to be able to find the bullet because of a complete pass through. I have tried a lot of different bullets as I hand load, and find that Barnes, and Nosler Partition are my favorite ones.
I have had high-pressure signs in my Christinson Arms 300 PRC sice day one. The first few times I shot it with factory Hornady ammo I ad to pound the bolt open and then pound it back with the palm of my hand.. It has gotten better the more I have shot it but still with the 225 ELDM ammo it is a stiff bolt after just a few shots, also could see rifling marks on bullets when chambering the 225 ELDM ammo after I ejected a live round.
Jim, I suggest you stop shooting that load. From your description it sounds as if the throat/leade in your rifle is too short to accommodate those long bullets. They are jamming into the rifle lands. This creates significant inertia on firing and that raises chamber pressures to dangerous levels. Either seat those bullets deeper or ream out some freebore in the leade.
@@RonSpomerOutdoors Thank you for the advice, those 225-grain ELDM bullets are quite long. I have gotten some Hornday outfitter in 190-grain pure copper. I will see if they make contact with the lands as I am not set up yet to reload. If so I guess I will be either sending it back to Christenson's arms or have a smith ream the thoat lead for me.
I enjoy both of your channels and this was a fantastic episode.. on the over pressure signs I have a 30-06 and had flattened primers on a 165 sst Hornaday superformence so definitely check your loads even factory. Keep up the good work!
Im very thankful people take the time to give us vital information, experience, and wisdom. For people like me who've never hunted and know no hunters, i can't express my gratitude enough. I hope I can find an experienced hunter to go hunt and learn from and make a lifetime friend.
Awesome discussion, I really enjoyed the information, and your stories. It shows what kind of men you both are, when you can talk about your successes, but more importantly, your failures. Because we’ve all been there.
A truly enjoyable episode. Thank you both for what you bring to the understanding of ballistics and ethical hunting. Y'all represent the best of what TH-cam has to offer. Again, thank you.
THANK YOU Ron and Jim for such high quality work. Work that you both just happen to enjoy, and that comes through the camera lens. I have had the opprtunity through the years to read a lot of fine print in several magazines. I have enjoyed this hobby for more than 50 years. and now with the help of the internet, the wealth of knowledge and support has increased many times over. Thank for all that you do Ron and Jim.
I rely on both of your channels for useful shooting information. I have made many of my purchasing decisions based on the money and time you both have spent behind the gun. Thank you.
Excellent video content gentlemen. It's educational to listen to other hunters who make careful observations, thanks for sharing them. Having wandered up and down the bore diameter, bullet weight, speed and construction myself, more and more I think that monometal bullets with reasonably high rpm are as close to "it" as I've seen in nearly 50 years of chasing big game. Thanks again and all the best to you both.
A delightfully thoughtful, informative and empathetic conversation - a pleasure to watch gentlemen, thank you very much! Warmest regards from the deepest rural Yorkshire, England

What !!! a realistic at the same time educational conversation!!! A gave thank to both of you guy’s. I feel so happy about every time I watch your videos 👍
Two of my favorite people in the same broadcast is pretty cool. When the subject of one MOA hunting rifle comes up , I am reminded that every gun that claims to be one MOE is typically just under two am I way for real unless you can do your own loads to bring it in.
Those rifles are also shot indoors locked down in a vice with a controlled trigger pull. With no variables, they probably are sub-moa. Doesn't mean they will be sub moa in the hands of a shooter.
Great interview guy's, you are both 2 of my favorites. On the practice on how you hunt topic. I always practice with the rifle on my hand not resting on the sand bag because I won't have a sand bag in the field but I always have my hand!
Bow first for me too. Boy I had to think back but grandpappy hand made me first bow. Just two arrows to start with and permission to harvest as many semi wild Guinea fowl. It took my over two weeks tu bag the first critter but there was no going back, I was 7 almost 50 yrs ago.
And I have been a fan of both channels for some time, now. One of my favorite Ron Spomer memories is when he was elk hunting with the Mossberg Patriot 7 mm Rem Mag. It is not here or at his site, it is now at a site called Wide Open Spaces and it is privatized. Of course, all of Jim's comparison vids. Including his newest ones, the rifles he would not take on a hunt, for various reasons from inaccuracy to prohibitive weight. Then, again, he has taken so much game with the Sig Cross.
Excellent show. I enjoyed the discussion on the copper bullets. i have been shooting Accubonds for years, and i am starting to load more copper. This is my first year in Alaska and it will be my first year hunting with copper. Thank you both.

@@omf2007 haha fair enough😂 maybe not the correct word to use for that. haha but yah just a fan of both and had wondered if they might ever do a collab podcast together talking guns. Certainly not the way or context in which the word ‘fantasy’ is normally used nowadays?! haha but also, I am fantasy/sci fi fan in general, you know like LoTR or Star Wars and all that fun, entertaining type stuff. Hmmm wait i think there’s another application of the word fantasy?🙃🤔
I would agree with Ron on archery. Most of the animals don't know what stung them, and they run 30 yds or stand there and fall over. It's good to hear the Blue Wildebeest stories.
I love both you're guys channels watch almost every episode! As a Nebraskan though I must say I've only shot one deer inside 50 yards, most are 150-300 yard shots in my area but you could often take them from over a mile if you had the ability. Lots of quarters and sections of farm ground that may have a few shelterbelts of trees on the edges but most have gotten tore out so the pivots for irrigating the crops can make full circles. There are of coarse parts of Nebraska with more trees but also parts with no tree's whatsoever just wide open prairie and Sandhills. Keep up the good work gentlemen looking forward to the next videos!
On my short 60+ years of hunting and reloading I have found nothing beats real life hunts on animals and not gel test! Copper is king on tough big game but on deer size and smaller I prefer the lead because of the performance! Both types have there place! I was lucky growing up my fathers good friend was a friend with John Nosler in the 50’s and 60’s and my dads pre64 would drop elk amazing results with Partitons! I prefer the Accubond and Barns when hunting tough big game with much better results!

This was a great combination, I had to watch the whole thing.
I myself have never hunted large game with such a small caliber as 223 but Seeing Alaskan hunters successfully use it just blew my mind
Great dialog. Really enjoyable.
Yes fantastic to listen to my only gun utube channels please do this again
More please!
Great job guys!!!
Really enjoyed this
On my short 60+ years of hunting and reloading I have found nothing beats real life hunts on animals and not gel test!
