Here's What I'm Planting This June In Our San Diego Garden | Zones 9 & 10

  • It's already June, but there are SO MANY things that you can plant this time of year. Let's dive into it!
Here in zones 9 and 10, we can garden all year long. We really just have two long growing seasons: cool and warm. We're still in the first half of the warm season. That means we're mostly continuing what we've been doing for the last couple of months.
We've removed or added a few things here and there, but all of the warm season months are mostly the same.
This big thing for June is to continue succession planting. If you haven't started yet, that's okay too. Get on it! Most crops are ready to harvest anywhere between 45 and 90 days, so you might be already taking out some of your early crops if you started them in February or March. Time to bring in the replacements!
This is not a totally comprehensive list, but it should be plenty to get you going.
    DIRECT SOW
With warmer soil and ambient temperatures, it can be easy to direct sow certain crops, especially those with larger seeds. This includes things like beans, corn, cucumbers, melons, squash, and pumpkins.
If you live in an area that doesn't get much or any rainfall this time of year, be sure to keep the soil moist!
    TRANSPLANT OR SEED START
Eggplant, peppers, tomatillos, and tomatoes are all easier to start in seed trays. You can still start new seeds, or you can transplant seedlings out, whether you started them or bought them from a local nursery. Depending on your variety and how long it takes to reach harvest, you may be running short on time to start them from seed.
These all have smaller seeds and generally like warmer soil temps to germinate, so it's easier to start them in a controlled environment.
We have the last of our tomatoes in cells now, and we're going to transplant them out pretty soon here. That's because it gets really hot up in Ramona, so we don't want to be starting these outside in the middle of the summer.
    FLOWERS
There are a TON of flowers you can start this time of year, so we've just listed some here. Some of my favorites are cosmos, dahlias, gaillardia, sage, and zinnias.
With all of this advice, it's general to zones 9 and 10. Heck this time of year, these recommendations apply to just about anywhere in the northern hemisphere. That said, I encourage you to break the rules a little bit.
Try planting some seeds at the recommended time, but maybe also try some before and after. You might just find out a better planting window for your micro-climate.

June is when I clone my fall tomatoes here in NorCal 10a. Pruning and rooting cuttings off my current tomatoes gives me a jumpstart over growing them from seed. 💚

Yes, that's a GREAT way to do it. Already pruning, so might as well use those to start new plants!

9b central valley, nothing but 90s for 2 weeks now, going into triple digits after Tuesday. We may be the same zone but our summers are not the same. Everything goes into survival mode in June through August and generally speaking pollen becomes non viable when temperatures remain above 90 for multiple days.

Thank you so much for the info. Well here in the Imperial Valley it is averaging 102 to 106 degrees so shade is definitely up.

I understand what secession planting is. But I grow your typical tomato’s, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, okra, squash almost all the way to July/ August where the duds and zucchini die off. And then I’ll plant something heat tolerant. I’m in zone 9B, But my other plants just until I plant for winter time. Please let me know if I’m doing something wrong in your opinion. Thank you and great video

@samanthawhang7498I had some tomatoes that i grew last spring the grew all summer and fall the looked like they were going to die in the winter got some frost damage, but in late winter early spring the started to thrive again, they just wouldn’t die 😂 It was in a inconvenient spot of my garden because it was right in the walkway at the entrance of the garden 😂 i ended up pulling it because i still have so many tomatoes in the freezer from this plant

You’ve talked a lot about succession planting. How do you know when a plant is ready to get pulled out? Or when it’s done giving fruit? Is it when it’s dying? I’m a new gardener so I’ve never succession planted but would like to.

    • @SanDiegoSeedCompany
      @SanDiegoSeedCompany  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

It depends on the plant. Herbs will go to flower, and the taste will often change. Something like a determinate tomato will give all at once, but an indeterminate (or squash, peppers, etc.) will continue to produce over time, so it's your call on when the plant either no longer looks healthy or stops producing.

I am growing Armenian cucumbers in container and they were yellow and dying off before opening so I used bone meal and they have started growing a lot. Do I keep using this fertilizer and how often ? Or add in another too ? Your videos and calendars inspired me to start gardening 😊

Dahlias- how much water should I give them on drip? Also when it gets hot and dry out? It is dry here.
I read that they need 60 minutes of drip watering 3 times a week. I live in Southern California, zone 10. That’s a LOT of water!! How can I be smart about watering?
