Hi David - thanks for the video. I just recently purchased the F38 backpack clip along with the Ulanzi F38 tripod. Initially, I found that I could not use the clip because of the pointy screws sticking me in the arm as you illustrated.. However, I solved the problem by replacing the screws with three #10-32 x 3/4 inch machine screws from the local hardware store (cost $1.39 for a pack of four). Now the clip feels great. Will be sure to pack a very small Phillips screwdriver when I travel in case I need to tighten them. So staying with the F38 system for now! I would be glad to post a picture here but cannot figure out how! 😇
I like this idea. I may try this!
Great! I picked up a used one with missing screws for dirt cheap, I was looking for the sizing info, thanks!
The screws from Peak Design is not the same thread size to Falcam F38? So we use that cause PD is selling extra screw bits.
Yes, I've done the same thing, Philip !
They have a redesign now it’s better!
That portion at 2:12. You can do the same thing with the PD clip. Unscrew the nut and put the anchor underneath. Tada!
Honestly impressed with ulanzi updates on the system.
They made a version this year with 2 screws to fix the anti rotation plate and and multiple 1/4 3/8 holes in the base as well for anti rotation. which was my qualm with going from.arca to f38
Ive currently got a PD clip and a 3Legged thing tripod. Was thinking about upgrading to the PD tripod, then learned about the Ulanzi tripod... Dont want to give up on my PD clip - so the plate you introduced at the end is a godsend!
I totally love the F38 ecosystem I have it on every piece of gear that I own, even ended up on my led lights and phone mount. Awesome vid as always David!
Now that I've been working with the F22 system a bit, I'm in the same boat! F38 for everything large and F22 for all the little things. Crazy how quick and simple it is!
@David Loved your review of the F38 comparison (past video) and looked at my own clip and realized it was the same and had the wiggle/play BUT I dislike Ulanzi as a company (own reasons). I added a small sliver of gaffer tape (SUPER SMALL) to the inside of the capture clip and it helps remove most of the play but keeps its fully functional. It doesn't slide in as smooth but serious reduction in play / noise.
Dude, such a solid idea Shawn! I'll for sure give that a try. As for Ulanzi, if you get a chance, at least grab the F38 Quick Release plate ($13) to see how good that system is🙌
@david
New Ulanzi back pack quick release just dropped. Interested to hear your thoughts on it
This video was just what I needed. I want to be able to use the Ulanzi F38 tripod while still using the PD Capture Clip. Thanks for showing me the way!
Peak design clip is $54. The $74 you’re mentioning is for both clip AND plate!
I would agree that the screws on the F38 strap clip are terrible, I went to my local hardware store and purchased alternative screws which are flush and voila, no more rough edges.
Man, I've checked Home Depot a few times and couldn't find the right size/length screws. I'll have to find another spot to grab them
One massive thing you overlooked is the fact that I can have my peak design clip repaired or replaced. Forever. For the rest of my life. And my bag, and camera strap.. and tripod... hm.. maybe we are enthusiastic..
@James Vespucci,
PD fan here but not for all. Have a lot of their gear but hate their 45L travel pack. Disappointed in their shoulder straps and I can handle loads like a mule. Took me a year to overcome my back problems which I never had with other packs with proper shoulder straps. I’m active and athletic build so it wasn’t because I overloaded myself.
Anyhow, they I would put PD as high quality and sometimes over-engineered products but at premium prices. It works for some and not for others. Works for me as I gravitate to high quality more often and can afford it.
And the Ulanzi/Smallrig camps, it’s more affordable, accessible, and good value for money and sometimes they do good quality but not often.
Not sure I buy in on that lifetime warranty stuff. The high quality materials in itself is what you pay for and use. The lifetime warranty is a bonus but it’s built in price and you (or I) may never use it. I usually switch gear every 3-5yrs as I can afford to do so and the tech moves so fast that I sell my used gear and upgrade. When younger and not making much then this lifetime warranty works for me as I would use it for 7-10yrs or longer. Wished PD had an option to select lifetime or not and reduce the prices for those who don’t want it, like myself , but I want their high quality materials, design, and over-engineering
Yeaaahhh, sort of. First off, both clips are such a simple system that I haven't had either of them break in years. BUT, I've had issues with Peak Design bags in the past and it's for sure not a no questions asked return/replace policy. They pressure you pretty hard to have it repaired on your own. Again though, I do love PD products and have a TON of them (bit of a fan boy myself), but I'm not loyal to any brand, just whatever gear is going to be the best choice to help me create👍
@@nomad0714 solid perspective on the "built into the price" there. Nothing is free in life and when it seems free, it's because you've already paid for it👍
Before I bought the F38 backpack clip I watched a review video on it and the presenter said you could swap out the stock tightening bolts with the "included" round head screws if you don't plan on removing the clip from the strap regularly. When I received the F38 backpack clip, there were no round head screws included so it looks like Unlanzi stopped supplying them. Too bad, because they would sure make reaching the release button easier.
See my reply above regarding which standard screws you can purchase at a hardware store to replace the stock tightening bolts. I thought of it when I saw a video on the Peak Design clip that mentioned that clip came with two sets of screws / bolts.
Awesome, thanks dude!
Recently purchased a 31L WANDRD Prvke and finally got out for a hike with my son on a warm day. Found myself unable to efficiently move my camera into position wearing my PD Slide strap in sling position, and wearing the Prvke. The backpack itself causes interference with the Slide’s motion. So then I got thinking about the Capture Clip, but I recalled seeing issues about the strap on the Prvke being too wide. So I got to searching and stumbled across your video here.
Happy to see the Capture Clip fits nicely on the Prvke. I know what my next gear purchase is going to be. 😁
Consider testing the PGYtech Capture Clip. It don't needs Screws.
If I only buy a peak design clip base that needs to be placed on the bag and I buy an F38 set that includes a base that can be placed on a camera and a base that can be placed on a tripod, then that f38 camera base is good for all the quick connectors, and the same is true if I have a peak design camera base can it be put into the f38 adapter?
Awesome vid! Could you maybe do a guide for an affordable soft box kit/system for beginners?
Would love to!
I think I saw that Yanzi in the falcon system has used a version two of their backpack clip that addresses these issues
Love the F38 system, hate waiting weeks for orders to arrive from China 😩
That for sure is a downside of the system! Wish they could get more gear over here in the states for quick shipping
Did you have to pay custom fees when you order from their website?
@David Manning, have you checked out Ulanzi's v2 backpack clip? It appears to have eliminated all the screws, period. Also looks quite a bit smoother, don't know if it's thinner.
Thanks!
I need to try that one out! Saw that it was released recently!
@@DavidManningvlog Looks like they watched your video and went straight to work!
Very cool. Will it work on the joby head?
Yep, that's what I have setup on my vlog tripod. I have the Joby head on there and then the F38 "Quick Release System" on top of that. It's $12.95 and turns any Arca Swiss into F38. You can also mount that same plate to a 1/4" or 3/8" thread to mount a camera on a magic arm or lightstand. It's insanely useful for 13 bucks!
I own the PD and have never seen the other one. I do not understand why you wear it on the right side. On the more natural left side the poking part would not poke anymore I think.
Oh my God! I loved ur bag! I tried searching it in ur other videos but couldn’t find. Can you add the link of where to buy it/name of the bag pleaseeeee!!!
This one right here! th-cam.com/video/PEglSbg_IBQ/w-d-xo.html
When I started watching this video I started to get slight FOMO about the f38 system, since I already have the peak design capture clip. Thanks for the insight about the dual plate! Now I can get into a cheaper system for quick release plates and othe accessories, while still keeping my capture clip
You're welcome! That plate makes the setup back and forth amazing!
I wish the peak design clips had the tripod screw it'd be nice to be able to mount it. I just use cheap arca swiss mounts for random places I'd like one fixed 24/7. The Kickstarter for the V2 peak design did have the tripod screw hole too.
Massive benefit to the F38 clip design! I have their plate on a bunch of different mount, turning either 1/4 into F38 or Arca Swiss into F38, like on my Joby head
If price is a concern, Andoer also sells a clone of Peak Design's v2 clip and v1 plate, but I'm not a big fan of the abrasive metal finish or the locking mechanism.
Ah, David, ths F38 system is a preferred option; certainly, PD's circular nubs are ergonomically less friction concerning, but you can purchase a generic 3/4 inch thread wheel to facilitate (right inner bicep) or two for the left bicep side. I don't care for the play in the PD modular frame - & irrespective of PD's lifetime guarantee, that's going to become a pain in the rear. Ultimately, it's an individual choice, both fiscally & aesthetically. Thank you. Wishing you & yours a peaceful & pleasant Christmas !
Andrew.
Solid points Andrew! Check out the new video on the channel with Falcam’s V2 version of the backpack clip. The completely redesigned it and it’s super slick now! I will say though, the V2 falcam version is smoother than both V1 and the Peak Design, but there’s a bit more play in the system from V1 to V2. I think that helps with easy in/easy out though
Was super interested in the F38 as a travel tripod but it doesn't have a detachable monopod like my Sirui.
Does ulanzi make a model with detachable leg?
I think they do, but it's more the older school tripod setup. When I want to use my F38 like a monopod to get stability and rotation, I just extend one leg and keep the other two folded up. I used to do that on my mefoto tripod that had a removable leg. Just found it faster than removing it and going back to tripod mode each time👍
@@DavidManningvlog I might have to go mefoto or sirui with detachable leg. Won't be taking it off while in the field. Decide at the hotel before day start to go full mono or tripod. What I currently do bring both a tripod and mono. Would be nice to travel lighter and with less space.
Hi @davidmanning theres a v2 of the ulanzi clip and i think it has adressed those issues we all experienced. Would be great to see if you can review it. Thanks and more power.
I'm still trying to decide which one to go with. I always love your content. It was great to meet you at NAB.
That dual-plate makes it easy to do the PD clip with F38 system! Love that thing! And man, great meeting you as well Sean!
And the new "claw" from Ulanzi ? did you try it ?
Wait a minute David.... you were selling me hard on the F38s at NAB. Cmon dude!
Did you watch the whole video or click off early?! The Ulanzi dual plate makes it so I can use the PD capture clip, but the F38 quick release system. Damn you messing up my retention chart Josh!🤣
@@DavidManningvlog Have some faith dude... I watched the whole video. Loved the breakdown and creative solution!
😘
Love F38. This is a great tip.
What a coincidence. I bought the Capture Clip v3 before a big trip recently, and was in the market for a tripod. Ended up with the F38 and ordered a few of these clips - and I was just playing with them as you posted this. Tripod hasn't arrived though. I feel there's sliiightly more play in the F38/PD plates than the PD plates, but minimal. I can't imagine I'll be bothered. Thanks for telling your views on this
So rad to hear! The ability to go back and forth between systems made it a no brainier for me! The PD clip is smaller and lighter and the F38 system is so damn good🙌
@@DavidManningvlog Love PD so far. Can't wait to try out the F38 tripod next week! 😎
Now I wish the falcam cages didn't come with the built in f38 plate on the bottom so the pd/f38 plate can be added without extra bulk!
I sent over a few recommendations to them! I'll include this as an idea!
Here are some alternatives i know of. I've not tried any of them, nor do I know if about the quality, or how good or bad these systems are to use. But mgiht be something to look into.
Maybe some sort of belt or strap system so you can have it in a different position, and adjust it to your liking?
A fanny pack/bum pack/ waist pack is probably a no go with that big lens. I know belt systems exists, like SpiderPro Camera Holster. It includes a pad to protect your thigh from the camera slamming into your thigh. Also best mount system too. It has a metal ball head that slots into a lock system. I see you can use a phone holder, a bottle holder on it too. Then you can have a camera with a massive lens, but mount it on the chest. Like Cotton Carrier CCS G3 Camera Harness System and CCS G3 Grey Harness For 2 for two cameras. They also make a belt accouchement and a belt with camera holster.
What is your bag?
Both systems have advantages. I like your ulanzi/peak hybrid build for the strap - I have the Ulanzi tripod and many of the ulanzi two-sided plates that I sometimes use with Peak stuff. But I don't use either capture clip because neither really fits on my Shimoda backback - which is otherwise THE most perfect camera backpack (I can't compete w your special Sony Camp premiums).
I just got the Shimoda Explore V2 30L. I managed to get the PD clip on the left shoulder strap above the pouch, but it rides high and is hard to see to get the camera plate locked in. It was very difficult to get the PD capture clip on due to the thickness of the shoulder strap padding.
Oh man, those Shimoda bags look so sweet! Am I right that they're geared a bit more towards and outdoors style/use case? The V2 30 in Army Green looks amazing though
@@KentFleshman I wish PD would address this sort of issue with an XL version of their clip for larger strapped bags. That would be ideal
shimpda has a video on their web site with directions for mounting the PD capture clip.
I also got myself a wandrd Prvke 21L as my first camera backpack👍🏻 A very nice backpack with a combination of utility and elegance.
I’m also thinking about buying a pd capture as well, but it seems that the strap on the Wandrd 21L is a bit wide and pd capture claims that it fits straps up to 2.5” wide only. Do you have any difficulties when installing it on your backpack? Do you need to squeeze the strap in order to get it installed properly? I’m worrying that it will cause damage on the shoulder strap and especially the hard track for the chest strap after a long term use.
Fits great Frankie! I was worried about damaging the hard track, but so far, it doesn't look like that's an issue. It's more just squeezing down on the track, so I think it will be okay. Also though, I pretty much put on these capture clips and leave them on there for the life of the bag. So even if there's some minor damage to the track after a few years, I'll never see it👍
Have you tried the F22 system? Thoughts or Review?
Yeah, check out this video where I build out a quick release rig! It's a combo of F38 and F22. Love both systems th-cam.com/video/LWFVETW44fM/w-d-xo.html
SmallRig has something like that,
maybe you can do review of it.
I’m skeptical of the quality of the string used to secure the belt clip onto a belt or shoulder strap of backpack
3:12 PD plate is working with ULANZI adapters? i dont like the clip of Ulanzi for my back pack but i like his sistem and price. so that why i chose F38 ULANZI vs PD. except for backkpack wich i want to get one but dont know wich one.
It’s been impossible to find the F38 capture clip in the UK. Even. When I was in the US in January it was out of stock for the 3 weeks I was there
Literally just received my F38 clip today! I'll be using it on a shoulder bag, so the biceop chaffing should be a non issue! Lol. So far I love the F38 ecosystem, as I use it on my tripod and gimbal as well, so I'm sticking with it! 😎👍
In that setup, you'll be stoked! Honestly, the chafing was the main issue for me. Maybe if I lived somewhere colder and would have long sleeves on more often, it would make sense, but being in San Diego, the chaff-ability is real🤣
purchased the 31 wandurd pack... looks nice! can't wait to try it out.
I need to up mine to that bag! I love the bag, just need a bit more size!
for some reason the Falcam F38 Quick Release System for Shoulder Straps is only available in the US
Thank you for the video.
Can the F38 plate be attached to the quick design Capture Clip? If it can be installed, does the locking function work properly?
Sweet video! I was looking at the PD clip, I'll also have to check out the Ulanzi system as well.
As an avid hiker I got the polar pro version for Xmas a few years back. I’ve gone through 2 of their base plates. The Rubber just wore off and it never stayed secure. The only reason I haven’t switched to the F38 system back pack clip was exactly your reason for switching back to peak design. I have F38 on all my cameras, tripods, and gimbals. It’s a bummer that backpack design is so awkward. Lately I’ve just been hiking with my camera secured with the peak design strap and ditched the camera clip for a while. I like this new plate I’ve been considering this option. Just tired of spending money.
amazing! could i use the F38 also on dji ronin?
Did you try Pgtech Beetle camera clip? please give your thooght!
Haven't tried it because I had some friends tell me they didn't like the buckle system. Haven't played with it myself though!
Hi David, what's the camera strap model / color / length ?
which F38 plate for PD QR for camera strap ?
pls let me know buddy..thank u so much.
Hi David, What F38 quick release system (the name of the Ulanzi product) is used on your travel tripod?
Can you link the that camera strap please
I love the F38 and use it a lot. Wish the main screw in base wouldn't move so much though as it does. you can get a base that works with both . yes like you said at the end of the video. Same as me man.
Perfect plate for the gimbal mod as i replaced the lower arm with the falcam f38 for zhiyun m3 arm on yhe DJI rs3 mini. Now works for both perfectly! 🎉
What is that strap you're using? It's interesting
Hey, love the video’s. I’m heading to Disney with a GoPro and knowing the best accessories for that trip would be great.
The GoPro Battery grip is pretty great for Disney! We did Disneyland recently with a GoPro in a MediaMod, with the GoPro batery grip, and it was a killer setup! Disney won't allow extending poles in the park, so make sure you don't have anything extendable on you👍
Does the f38 backpack clip fits the peter mckinnon 25L bag straps ? The f38 swivel clip design does look tighter
Great video! Just a thought. Did you try switching place with f38 and the pd on your bag? Maybe it would’ve giving another outcome? Thinking if you use your left arm less than the right arm?
Yeah, I've tried both sides and you'll actually see in a new video coming up, why I switched my PD to the right side of my bag instead of the left side, like most people have it
Uhh what’s the brand of your shirt? It’s awesome
Cuts. They’re dope!
@@DavidManningvlog Thank you!
@DavidManningvlog Have you had any problems with the f38/PD QR plate coming loose from the base of the camera ? ive read a few reviews where this has been the case.
Have you tested PGYTECH Beetle?? i think it is far more useful compared to peakdesign or f38..
All I will say is that the peak design capture clip is significantly better.
So much so that Ulanzi makes a f38xPeak Design Capture Clip plate.
So I can put my Ulanzi/Peak Design clip on my capture clip, peak design tripod, and also my gimbal with has a ulanzi attachment.
Swap out that PD tripod for the Falcam F38 version and you've got yourself the perfect setup!😉
and what abou the Ulanzi CLAW CLIP ?
I don’t own a f38 but can’t the thumb screws be replaced with hex bolts like on the Peak Design?
Yeah, I've just had a tough time finding a good replacement. And even then, the shape of the clip still has much more of a protrusion than the PD. The multi-plate solves the problem though👍
Thank You for the video. I was looking for a clip that can be use by both system. I have tons of Peak Design stuffs but I love the F38 Quick Release system. Very well inform.
This looks to be great if you only use the pd/f38 clip. What's the solution if your using their cage/l bracket?
Version 2 of the Ulanzi clip corrects all of the version one's shortcomings.
Okay, you have shown some nice videos of San Diego but I saw another TH-cam channel that really showed San Diego and it looks absolutely stunning! Definitely on my bucket list of places I need to visit and experience myself. David, how’s that Tik Tok dance coming? Hehe. I got my GoPro Daytripper bag. I like it but it does lack storage space but very nice. Not sure if you ever did a video on it but would like to know what you think of it, maybe compared to the Weekender. Just going by the 2 names you have to think that the Weekender would hold more but definitely like to know your thoughts.
Dude, that's a sweet bag! I've been super impressed with GoPro bags and I'm sort of shocked they haven't pushed that line more. The organization in particular is so damn clever, but it just sort of feels like a pet project for GoPro. And you're totally right, the DayTripper has a 15L capacity and the weekender has a 32L capacity, so quite a bit larger of a bag!
I love your videos keep up the good work :-) I exchanged the bulky screws from my f38 clip with some standard hex screws, works perfect if you have enough clips and don't have to undo them often 😉
My problem with the PD clip is that it won't fit on a lot of my backpack straps. The straps are either too thick or wide.
Yeah, I wish they made an XL version for thicker straps
@@DavidManningvlog is the F38 clip better in this regard?
Really appreciated thank you for info
My peak design capture clip fails all the time and won't release my camera and I miss so many shots 😡 i may have to switch
Invincible 😊Clipper 🎉
Hey David, did you say the base plate is arca swiss compatible? So if my tripod is arca will it just slide in?
Sure is! Both the PD plate and the F38 plate work within their own quick release systems, but are also arca swiss compatible👍
6:48 any possibly of having it higher up?
What the piece on the vlog tripod which model is it?
Is the after credits for me on! Looove ot sooo much
Honestly, I thought you were shilling for Ulanzi until I tried the clips out for myself. Peak Design needs to update its lineup to not get left behind and it'd be good to have multiple companies competing to push each other to have even better products.
The key to using the F38 is having tiny biceps. 💪🏻
Or always wearing a jacket! Living in San Diego, that doesn't quite work out though🤣
Thanks for making this video. I appreciate you
I appreciate you watching Yemane!
@@DavidManningvlog I got the new Peak Design with the read tab that releases the camera & it doesn't shake or wiggle. But having the ability to use one baseplate for all my accessories is really too much Power lol
I gave KODAK digital picture frames to half a dozen family members for Christmas years ago and after about two years, KODAK or whomever operates the server SHUT DOWN THE SERVER so we cannot upload or access any of the photos on ANY of the photo frames we gave out as presents. Wonder how long, before AURA does the same thing? They can't keep providing unlimited server space forever.
To be fair, when you say "years", in my mind if my $150 Aura frame is still kickin' in 5-7 years, I would be thrilled!
I am moving over to F38 from my long time loved Manfrotto RC2 plate. Great little video. You now sold on the magnet strap you were walking around with at NAB?
Shhhhh Paul! Magnet strap video coming soon😉
@@DavidManningvlog 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I just got the mag strap from Ulanzi, love it. Got the grey classic design model
what brand and model is that tripod where your Joby ball head is connected?
That's the PolarPro Apex Base with Joby head and then the F38 plate on top of that!
@@DavidManningvlog thanks man. though i love the f38 plate system, i also thought of that for the backpack clip. the only plate i didn't purchase in the system was for the strap, since i'm using a dual shoulder cam strap. appreciate the response!
Love your content. Could you make a video on your settings?
Yeah, I think I'm going to start diving back into tutorials real soon. Photo and video on here as well as some editing tips/tricks
can put the PD plat to the F38??
Hi David! Did you try to switch the screw bolt from the Peak Design to the Falcam F38? If the thread size and length is the same so we can buy extra screw bolt of the PD since they are selling it separately. I don't have the PD just have the Falcam so I can't try it. Can you help me with that? Thanks man!
With a 24-120 lens and body, do you think the weight is awkward? Does your back hurt while wearing it up front all day? Planning to go to Disneyland in the near future and interested if this will be uncomfortable, especially with the heat.
Peak Design just needs to step up with the competition, their slim design is good just make the same changes as F38 and everyone will be a happy camper
Yeah, sort of shocked that the PD tripod didn't use the same quick release mechanism as their clip. Might be because of the looser tolerances though. That PD play wouldn't fly on a tripod setup
@davidmanning What bag is that? I love anything camo and it looks comfortable.
It looks like the WANDRD PRVKE 21L, but in a camo colorway which I haven't seen before. Also not sure which version but I'm assuming the latest one or might even be a "camp special."
Do you really save any money when you have both systems?
I'm in a different camp because I test these things online so that other people don't have to. I spend twice as much so you can spend half👍
Hi David, have you figured out a way to use a quick release strap like you had with the F38 but with the Peak Design Capture system?
Can I insert f22 plate into f38 mount?
Great, i just ordered the galcam one bc of your other video😂💀
Hahaaa! Still a very dope camera strap! Like I said, you really can't go wrong with either of them👍
So love your videos and continue to watch even the ones where I don't have the same cameras as you. I always seem to find something I want/need. You mentioned disneyland and wanted to know what your gear is when you go. We are heading there in November and I wanted to bring my hero8. Ill probably be pucking up few falcom 22 after your most recent video but wanted to get your opinion on what else I should load up on lol.
*I have a Smallrig And the falcam F38 but Mines a Tripod version and I love mine of course I had to buy one of those multi tools for this lmao but I love the Ulanzi but I need a new Tripod as this gives too much play on My K&F tripod*
Change from wing nut to flat head screw.
Some valid points but yeah I’ll take the cheaper F38 system all day every day!
Really useful comparison and just what I’ve been looking for! How well does the peak design clip for on the wandrd prvke backpack? I understand the clip fits on straps up to 2.5 inches, but aren’t the straps on the wandrd wider than that?
