  • This is our step-by-step guide for growing Carrot Microgreens hydroponically! For this grow we decided to do something a little different and instead of using Coco coir or Soil for growing Carrot Microgreens, we went with a hydroponic grow mat called Biostrate! If you would like for us to do an updated "How to grow Carrot Microgreens" with Coco Coir or Soil --- let us know in the comment section below!
    ✅ In this video we do a full walk-through grow from seeding to harvest day using Carrot Microgreens - keep in mind that Carrot microgreens are a slow grower and take about 20 days till they're ready for harvest, so if you plan on selling this microgreens we suggest factoring in their grow time when you set a price! This is also a microgreen that we personally suggest letting it get a developed true leaf because it is really beautiful!
    Carrot microgreens have a light carrot scent and flavor to them - however if your looking for a microgreen that really packs a carrot punch.... we suggest trying Shungiku Microgreens aka Three Colored Daisy!! Also, if you've never smelled carrot seeds --- your in for a treat.
    **Keep in mind that for different grow mediums such as grow mats or our reusable microgreen grow medium, different techniques may need to be used to get the exact results, so keep in mind that not all mediums are equal - however, this video will give you a great head start on learning!
    And if you want to know even more in depth how to grow microgreens? Our newest book "Becoming a Microgreen Master" is NOW AVAILABLE!! 🥳🥳🥳 It is our ultimate guide to growing microgreens and is a combination of everything we have learned as of 2019 to 2021. (linked below)
    We also have MANY other full walk-through grow videos on our TH-cam channel for various crop varieties! Thank y'all so much for the support!

    Hi Mandy & CJ
    Ash here from Queensland Australia. I've just read all the comments and got some answers. I was just wondering how long you put a tray on the seeds and do you use any weight. Also do you do any blackout time aswell. It would be great to see a full walk through on carrots. Love your work. Thanks Ash

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hello Ash!! Thank you so much for reading all the comments, that really helps us. For carrot we usually do 5days with an Empty Tray on top as weight, then 1day black out. On average will grow it for 20days until we see the true leaf. Sometimes carrot can be picky with shedding the seed hulls, so if you have a problem with that try lightly misting the seed hulls and take your hand (clean hands only!) and very lightly rub across the tops of the plants to help a few of them come off.

    Great video; I am getting ready to order my first batch of carrot seed from TL so it was very timely. Was also interested to see that you are using Biostrate. I am considering doing some of my live tray grows on Biostrate as the chefs seem to like it better in their kitchens than the coco coir I am currently using.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Biostrate has never failed us... we’re trying to move away from it, to something more sustainable, but it just performs so well. Not saying that it isn’t a sustainable product, we just don’t know because they don’t clearly explain what’s used in it. It’s super easy to handle and there’s no “dirt” so it’s super clean presentation. Plus you don’t have the weight from soil... easier to move and handle. Thank you so much for the support!

    Just starting our first microgreens, and so excited! Planted 6 trays of different seeds, and are on Day 5. All of them are doing really well - big sprouts already, most of them. But the carrots have only just barely sprouted, are really tiny, and are only just beginning to show the first tiny roots below the tray. What are we doing wrong? Could it be something wrong with the seeds, or is it us?

    Do you apply weight on top of the carrot trays?

  • @Housebarons
    @Housebarons 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi, thanks for this video! There isn't much info available specifying about carrot micros. We just started planting carrot microgreens and we use organic soil. We cover most micros, except broccoli, with a thin layer of soil when we plant. Should the carrot micro seeds be covered with soil?
    How tall should the carrot micros be to harvest? How many ounces of carrot to you typically get from a 10x20 tray?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We typically harvest ours on day 12-20 depending on how developed the true leaf is... we average about 120g/tray for harvest from 10g of seed.
      We only grow hydroponically at the moment so we cannot cover carrot or any of our other crops with soil and most grow perfectly without it! We do put a tray on top for about 3-6 days until most the seed hulls are pushed off. Even when we grew with soil, we never covered the seeds with soil and always got great results! Hope that helps!!

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OnTheGrow Okay, thanks much, for a long time they have one leaf, then they develop
      multi-leaves. How tall should the carrot micros be to harvest?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Housebarons We usually harvest ours around days 19-23... They are about 3 inches tall at that point. You could grow them longer or shorter if you like, but we find they look best around that length of time!

      So we just harvested our carrots, they took about 20 days... since they take a lot longer, I would charge a premium for them... it depends on your local market really. I would likely sell it for $6/1oz container or maybe even more.
      Everything else we grow has a maximum grow time of 10-12days on our shelves so we have to be able to justify the carrots taking up space for a lot longer.

    I don't know if it's necessary to use pH balanced water. I think a bit of acid helps germination but I can't confirm this. I have heard someone say acid helps break into mucous tomato seeds to start germination. I recently learned that my water is 7.5 coming out of the tap and 6.2 after filtration. It turns out minerals have quite an alkalizing effect to extend pipe longevity and minimize corrosion.

    Please answer this question: I have trays without holes and it's not possible to drill holes into these and I'm using cocopeat as medium. I'm growing only wheat grass now and I want to try other crops but I don't know if it will work since it doesn't have drainage. Please do answer.

      There are a million things to use as trays. A lot of take out and fast food plastic trays have tops or lids that you can flip upside down and make a quick tray. Anything that has or that you can put holes in with a place for water underneath. Sorry for the late reply.

      We get ours from Bootstrap Farmer because they are the most sturdy trays we have tried... We've used ours heavily over the past 7 months and only 1 tray has cracked. Here is a link to the trays we use: www.amazon.com/shop/onthegrowfarms?listId=DTGPX0RYY5R3

    Here’s a question for the community... i may be guilty of asking a question already asked in a previous post. I’m sure you guys find yourself answering the same darn questions. But I’m not aware of any way to search our posts & your responses for things like “peroxide” or “ph” before I ask them??

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, that's alright, we don't mind answering the same questions! We are going to be doing some experiments with peroxide in the beginning of 2020. We currently pH balance the water we use for "bottom watering" down to the 5.5-6.0 range. Generally our go-to is 5.8pH. Here is a link to our video on pH: th-cam.com/video/K04F7dY2WoQ/w-d-xo.html

    Very cool. Just curious, if I were to grow them out to baby carrots, what type of tray would I grow them in? And would I have to revert to using dirt instead of other growing mediums?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you were to go for Baby Carrots, we would suggest a deeper tray (2”-3”+ deep) and using a soil type medium. Also, use a much lower seeding density so that you don’t end up with like 3,000 carrots and run out of space for them to grow 😆.

    are there nutrients in your water

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! We add nutrients to our water if we are not using soil. Most of the mediums that we grow with do not have nutrients and we like that because we can pick and choose what goes into our crops.

    How those the microgreen carrot taste?
    What is the turn around time after planting?
    What is the harvest weight for the carrot?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great questions Marcus! The taste is like carrots, which is really nice... They are not as sweet as carrots but the fragrance is there. The growth time is about 20 days and the harvest weight is around 180g/tray. They don't produce high yields because they are such delicate crops, so they would sell for a premium.

    Dumb question here. I had never heard of microgreens Until a few days ago. I don’t quite understand what they are. If this is carrot, where are the carrots? So obviously you’re not growing carrots, but is this actually carrot? So does it taste like carrots?

      🙂 We're dealing in MicroGreens...we are taking the carrot leaves and all their super carrot flavor straight over to the cookbook within a few days...long before the actual carrot forms underground!! Microgreens are packed with 4-40 times more nutrition!!!

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They taste similar to carrot with an almost herby flavor to them. If you grow them out for about two months, they will actually begin to develop little baby carrots! We know of growers who are selling those baby carrots for about $0.50-$1.00 each to restaurants... They are making about $200-400 from a single tray of them grown in dirt to the baby carrot size. We haven't used nantes carrot yet, but we will be playing with them in the future more so we will see if we cant find some to try... For our microgreens, they take about 20 days on average and taste great!
