I can't express enough how grateful I am for you Tyler. Like you, I became interested in adventure touring through The Long Way movies. At that time I figured you had to have a ton of money to get into it. That is until I saw your channel. I was inspired and just recently bought an 89 KLR and took it to Moab and down to the Grand Canyon through Monument Vally. Had an amazing time and didn't spend a minute in a hotel. I just found places to hang my hammock. Again, Thank You so much for all you have done to get me on the trails.

When I take big projects apart. I like to use the small zip loc bags with the strip on it to write on. I will note what it went to and place it in a bag. then later when resembling all the fasteners get put back!. great build project Tyler. I'm excited to see how it looks when your done.

love it! especially for all the KLR-PEOPLE. 1 thing that would help you is a work bench if you don't have room use a truck tail gate in your drive way. it's a good way to stay organized in and not tripping on things. keep up the good work on your build. you Rock!

On my last build I had a folding table set up and it helped a lot! I guess I was just too lazy to bring it out this time... or just too excited to get started! haha :D

got to love the Tusk panniers, lock to the bike and the lids lock. one thing you have to remember how wide they are, I've hit a few bushes pretty hard. I also get some weird looks, I guess people have never seen them on a DR650

My old KLR is in similar shape, even down to the broken speedo needle. I miss riding it and I will follow along and copy some of your ideas for my bike. Good series. Keep them coming.

hey man I just wanted to say that I have been a huge fan of yours for a while now and it's because of you that I bought a 2005 KLR650 to ride and get off the beaten path. I have multiple sclerosis and have good days and bad days but I know that every time I see you posted a new video I know that it's going to be a good day.
keep on being awesome I don't think you know how great your channels are.

Not sure if anyone has said this yet or if you already know, but regular grips are pretty easy to put on and take off with a compressor and an air blower chuck. I know those were heated and probably would be a lot more difficult to do so may be this info is not as useful.
Any way the bike is looking awesome and I can't wait to see the next steps.
    Keep up the great work.
    Peace.

Thanks man! Yeah they did have the hard plastic "base" so I couldn't slip any lube or air down in there to make it loose. Ugh I still have the blisters! I hope the heated grips still work! haha :D

They're a bit pricey, but you should check out the Mitas e-07 dakar tires. The dakar version of the e-07 specifically was designed to have a reinforced sidewall to prevent punctures, pinches, etc. I put them on my gen1 KLR and absolutely love them. The only issue i had was on some loose shale rock, but I think that's more to do with my abilities rather than the tire.

With these heated grips they had a plastic sheath underneath that wouldn't flex to get a compressor/lubricant straw in there. I've heard that's the bees knees when the grips will flex a bit!

NO WAY BORING! Your vids are excellent. You and Twistedthrottle are way out front in adventure riding vids. It's real world stuff with all the fun, bruises, and scabs included.
-Your camera work is good enough that we can see what you're doing.
-Your sound is good enough that we can hear your narration clearly.
-You do voice overs with NO music.
-Your presentation is logical, energetic and positive.
-Your subject matter is intensely interesting to the KLR community. We get to see you mod a KLR with some of the best aftermarket accessories available and we know that you are going to beat the living shit out of this KLR and all the cool stuff you just bolted on. And, you will take us along to see how it all works out.
-And, most important, THERE AIN"T NO CHICKENSHIT MUSIC!!
      Boring? I don't think so.

You ever gonna use that green screen bro!! Hehe! Man, it's gonna be awesome! That rear rack is really cool. To get grips off there are a couple tricks that work. One, use some tri flow or similar lubricant and spray inside the grip and then just twist back and forth to get off. Also, using an air compressor and getting the nozzle under the grip can help you pull it off too. Never ever ever use grip glue or adhesive, use race wire :)

tyler, if you plan on modding the drz at all in the future I think you should consider the radiator fan mod. there are a bunch of forums on thumpertalk on how to install them and seems pretty easy to do and would be great for the black widow in that hot st George heat. I'm planning on doing it myself on my 05 E model because mine overheated recently and I had to sit there on the trail till it cooled off. if you do, you've GOT to make a video on it since so many ppl ask about it on the DRZ400 owners facebook page and the forums. or i'll make one and you can check it out?

I always found spraying wd40 under the handlebar grip with the little red tube shoved under the rubber the best way to take of grips. Then just cleaning out the oil with break kleen.

    • @robertskelley3465
      @robertskelley3465 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's basically what he was describing with the contact cleaner. I was thinking the same thing the whole time, until he said he couldn't get anything down in there, probably including the nozzle. I probably still would have tried wd40 or carb cleaner, anyways. They usually do a good job of soaking in the space between the grip and handlebar, whether u can get the nozzle in there or not.

    • @johnpike9612
      @johnpike9612 8 ปีที่แล้ว

he said there was a hard plastic sleeve of some sort preventing him from getting anything in there. however i always use compressed air and a rubber tipped blow gun to seperate my grips.

Excellent build so far mate. I love the lex exhaust, I have just put the lex on mine and it looks great, sounds sweet and gives back all that power from the over restricted, power robbing stock exhaust. You guys do get stuff alot cheaper than us in Aus though, $360 aud for a lex over here. I haven't seen those particular crash bars, I generally had a choice of sw motech, givi and happy trails...went the motech as they look cooler. Cant comment about the hair spray being in aus, I haven't seen it...but it has a kanga on the front so it must be a genuine aussie product ;). Be interested to see how u do the boots on the forks as I have to do mine on the KDX 200 very shortly, out of interest have you ever looked at a little KDX as a dual sport? Anyway really enjoying the build keep it up!

Hey Tyler, I was wondering just which bikes you own and which you have operational. I first found your channel because of the video where you ride the KLR up a mountain on your lunch break and all you had then was the KLR. Then I saw you got the Black Widow and the KLR disappeared for while. Now not only does it seem to be back but you also have two more bikes in your garage including the Black Widow, which doesn;t look like it's ready to go anytime soon.
TLDR, could you please clear up the number of bikes you own and which bikes are rideable? I'm just curious and a little confused haha.

Looking good bud. I am in the middle of a build of my own; a 1930 ford coupe! (Carport build!)
Anyways, I have a question for you. I was wondering what your opinion of a tracker bike was. I am a newer rider (sold first bike) but don't have technical trails like yours near me in MA. Love the look of a tracker more, but don't know if they would be capable of tackling a dirt trail or two.

Oh man I love the look of a tracker! I think that as long as you had a few knobs on the tires it should handle it, as long as it doesn't require a huge amount of suspension travel. I have been surprised by bikes I've ridden in the past that were more street bikes than anything, and still did surprisingly well in the dirt.

Maybe you or other viewers can help me find plastics kit for my 2005 KLR650 that I just bought used. Also is there a separate key for the gas cap or is it the ignition key? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you - S. Brewer

When this is done, will you please kick the bike over sideways and show off the crash bars in action? I was looking at this company but haven't seen them in person and this is as close as I'll get before I just buy the bars and skid plate.

It's just the Rustoleum stuff from Walmart. I'm not sure if it has any other colors. The paint is Krylon Max Almond/Satin. I hope that helps!

    Hi Mate
I'm thinking about getting a KLR, but my concern is the power. I have an old XT600 Tenere which is more powerful, so going down to a KLR is something that worries me. It's just the power to overtake as the roads I'd be riding are quite tight and cars drive super slow at times.
What are your thoughts on the available power upgrades? IE big bore piston kits. There seems to be very little info on them and how effective they are or if they effect the reliability.
Have you thought about doing something like that to your KLR to get more grunt? Or just a waste of money?

I would be trimming the rear plastic down a lot more so it doesn't point up so high, it looks a bit funny. Just my opinion though, it's not my bike.
