Yeah as a teen watching this, it kept me entertained and I learned a few things to help me become an adult. As an adult now, other than the nostalgia for all the things you mentioned, it does seem corny though. Maybe because I’m in my 40s, went through it all and don’t watch these things anymore (are there any talk shows like RL, Montell, Jenny Jones, etc. anymore?).
Do you really blv this is what society was like ? I was a teenager back then and here is a purpose for tv shows and all media back then .
It was basically to socially engineer and indoctrinate ppl into making them ideal consumers .
Ppl didn't behave like this , this TV show wanted them to behave like this ( behavior change ) .it's called "TV programming " it's designed to program your behavior.
This behavior is more practiced today by the Instagram youth, the whole idea of making ppl see your "living your best life " came into affect with Facebook around 2009 , 15 years after shows like this .
Back then if you broke up with someone you rarely saw them if you've both had graduated , this is only applicable with ppl who live close to each other or after social media became a thing .which wasn't available back then .
I've broken up with ppl in my late teens haven't seen them since, if we did she wouldn't recognize me and I wouldn't recognize her.

When I was a teenager bedridden in the hospital recovering from surgeries and other stuff. Hours of the days and nights meant nothing to me, I was stuck in bed, nowhere to go, before the internet and having a cell phone. When awake by myself, I discovered late night tv and the Ricky Lake show was one of the shows that let me escape my boredom some. The makeover episodes were some of my favorites bc I was like “man, I wish I had a health transformation and makeover.” Like living vicariously through the guests😂
