I've the same car, 2008 Toyota Yaris HB with 153,000 miles on it. I don't get any error code indicating a bad upstream oxygen sensor. Should I replace the oxygen sensor anyway? It seems like it's quite a difficult task unlike replacing spark plugs and ignition coils which are much easier.

If you have no error coded don't worry about it.

Does the mpg's go down before getting the check engine light? My 2007 yaris used to get 38 mpg, I'm down to 33 mpg and wondering if the O2 sensor is going bad. So far no check engine light.

Many things can cause drops in mpg. O2 sensors going bad will, but usually when it goes bad it throws codes. Dirty air filters, improperly inflated tires, messing oil change, old spark plugs, brake drag, the list goes on

Or the tire store doesn't carry the stock OEM tires size and they've replace it with one slightly larger (not significantly) which is in my case and my mileage had dropped significantly.

Do you know where the downstream sensor is located?

should be right after this upstream sensor on the past the flange. if you are under the car, it should just be a few inches from the flange in plain sight
