We have officially finished self converting our bus into a stunning tiny home and are now settling into our new normal as bus lifers on the road.
Join us twice a week as we showcase beautiful homesteads around Australia, practice living sustainably in our off-grid bus home and explore the stunning natural beauty of our states and territories.
Today we pull out our friend's winter crops which are done ready for their Summer planting.
And while we do that we thought we would reflect an share on our learning so far from 4 years homesteading and living and breathing the lifestyle.
We chat through our mistakes and what we will do differently next time we homestead on our own property.

If you leave the roots of the plants your pulling up it helps to retain the fungal network below the soil.. Less soil disturbance too... Love hearing about what worked and didn't in your homesteading journey.. Thanks for the share
Thanks so much Trish, yes I'm with you and in my own garden I often did just that, but when in someone else's garden we follow their rules - these guys compost all there garden scraps and mix through the soil and Id say deep in those beds there'd be some mighty mycelium networks - take care!
Hahahhaa I loved that! Yesss butter is the best with garlic and salt 😭 😍😍😍 4:01
Yum 😍👌
The garden is a great place to relax.❤❤❤
Absolutely! We spend a lot of time in our garden when we're home :) but have enjoyed visiting others gardens for now
You could use the slasher on tractor to mulch the compost heap into smaller pieces for quicker compost. Great video
Brilliant!!! See we're so new to this the thought hadn't even crossed our minds (noting for when we can afford one for our own property ;) )
@DiandSam WE use are push mower to do it when pruning trees and most of the time leave it on the garden for mulch
I have a dingo digger for my one acre.
Great tool.
It turns compost, clears grass, digs holes and is great for carrying things
Sounds like a truly back saving tool!
@DiandSam it really is particularly as I have limitations. .
Love the personal insights.
You can come house sit for us .
Hello from Queensland , Ive just subscribed , we have raised garden beds , best thing we ever did but wow this summer has been harsh so we are not growing too much yet but i preserve a lot of what we grown and give alot away
Thank you so much and hello😁👋 Has it been hot up there or other conditions that are making g it challenging?
Soooo good to have the preserves well done! That's why we do it, some seasons just don't quite work out
@@DiandSam Sooo hot its been shocking , most of our garden beds are having a rest until it gets cooler ,
Top of our wish list is a small gardening tractor but machines are REALLY expensive!!
It can also be expensive to build structures for gardening although both really help I liked how your channel previously encouraged others to start wherever possible and do what they could with the budget they had. It takes years to get established on a farm and can’t all happen overnight. It is good to avoid “mistakes” if you can but often it is just learning as you go.
Thats so true and we are still in that mindset too, but we're also opening to the idea of sharing machinery and tools with others homesteading in the area. We have really had our eyes open to the power of community and how a 30K tractor can be hired out or bought in partnership!
Oh and don't you worry if we build structures in the future you bet theyll be almost or all completely second hand/reclaimed to save cost!
There’s always cheap old machinery for sale, you’re not using it for a commercial purpose so a really old machine will work fine. There also much simpler to maintain. I own 100 acres and I’ll be buying older machinery, also using it to build jumps and corners for my dirtbikes. New machines do the job faster that’s all.
Hi ya Di and Sam , I built a hoop tunnel garden 8mts x 4mts covered in 30% shade over raised beds,so it was covered but the garden still grew.Happy New Year, take care and stay safe cheers from 🔥 hot humid QLD 🚎🥂❤️
Thats amazing, I love the idea of a shaded garden, our sun is so harsh, especially up your way in QLD that I'm sure it only does it good!
Take care
Hi from an ex Queenslander! Live in NSW and had a rural property which had 2 cabins on it plus 28 acres (not good land for veggies or animals) but our ‘retreat’ as we had our own business plus my husband has Parkinson’s. Had it 10 years but then had a robbery/break in and then bushfires which burnt our whole property except for the cabins - didn’t hear birds for a long time after the fires. Lost my heart and soul and felt scared so we sold. It still hurts that we don’t have it but life is unpredictable and will always be grateful for our little ‘homestead’ Good luck with your life experiences and where you end up 🙏👍🥰
Hey Sally, I am so sorry to hear about your property and experience, fires are terribly devastating, all the best :)
Hi Di and Sam. Hope you both had a great Xmas day. I agree garden beds off group do no bending and being protected somehow would be awesome. I think many guys are like that Sam with the garden. Listening to you two is making me excited to see your place in the future. The dogs are looking so good and happy. Huge learning growth guys. lol snoopy is watching and smiling every time you show one of the dogs. I get the hard and emotional when comes to harvesting animals you raise. I just couldn’t do on any animal. lol I was going to say what’s this if we homestead again. You guys are always going to be homesteaders. Nice spring onions. Great video.
Hey Rose, Merry Christmas to you as well :)
Oh I can not wait to see where we land one day, we have so many plans and ambitions and I just feel like we really know what we want to achieve this time instead of just learning it all!
Agreed, it definitely takes some disconnection to harvest an animal, its hard to do!
hahaha definitely 'when' not 'if'!!!
Take care gorgeous, hope Summer is being pleasant down there in VIc
A garden muncher would help with the compost
certainly would! :)
Omg 😂 I was gonna say 12:14
What defensive measures have you taken against the Apaches?
What are Apaches?
The spring onions really didn't need to be pulled out. You cut them off leaving 3cm and th ey continue to grow
I agree with you and normally I'd do this in my own garden but these guys wanted to start with some fresh crops :)
I love the structure. I'm wondering where they got all the bits from if you know. I love the trellising and wonder whether it would also be us3able for that
They would have sourced most from agriculture stores near us, and actually made it themselves! Very talented couple.
It could definitely be used as trellising, it is a very sturdy structure! :)
@DiandSam thanks for the tips. Will explore locally
If I could afford to I would build a structure like that. Raised beds, and a roof to keep all the animals out. I lose 'so much' produce to deer, kangaroo, wombats, rabbits. And oh the birds and insects......!! One day maybe! I love Silverbeet! I would love machinery too - but that will never happen! I could really relate to the story of you trying to turn the compost - I have that problem.... I hope you have an awesome New Year guys. Hopefully we can catch up in 2025. Much love, Susan xxx
Happy new year lovely 😍
Yes cost definitely is the reason we haven't invested in the past, I think when we go to do it ours will definitely look much more rustic with reclaimed materials probably from farms or salvaged, it's the only way to do it on a budget!
Netting is my regret too… didn’t put it in, and I’ve lost so much food to birds, and other animals and insects
Seems like so much effort but it's well worth it hey, everyone I meet is still yet to find the perfect netting solution especially for fruit trees
@ this year we are just trying the organza bags because birds always seem to find their way inside the nets here which is quite frustrating 😅😅 I have no idea if this is a mistake or not but I have only spent about $100 on all the bags in bulk so I guess it’s worth the experiment
Omg netting is on my list of things I knew I should have done and regretted not doing again this year. The fruit fly has ruined my tomatoes. So disappointed in my choice. So much food wasted.
Oh gosh I feel you!! I've had the same issues with fruit flies. It's so frustrating! I found that planting the same crops or a few varieties of them in different places on the property meant one side might get attacked but they'd leave the other side along. So upsetting though :(
May I ask why you believe you can’t eat chard (silver beet)raw? I’ve thrived on it for decades. Raw, cooked, baked…it’s amazing and differently nutritious any way you eat it.
Amazing that's great to know, I thought I had read somewhere that it's similar yo kale and has something in it that's tough to digest and can be bad for you
@@DiandSam. Kale and chard are both considered ‘roughage’ for digestion. Much like corn, they digest to a certain degree, lending their assortment of vitamins and minerals, and the more fibrous bits help push things through the colon. If you’re less inclined, or once the weather heats and the veins harden, you can choose to strip the greens from the centre vein and compost that tougher bit for raw, or chuck it in the cauldron for broth base.
We want to see Diane on tractor!!
Oh gosh!! hahaha I only just got the confidence to use the quad bike between trees in the orchard, you might need to give me another year to build my confidence haha
What’s on your short list of places to buy land / homestead?
Our hearts are in the Bega Valley, there are few places that offer what it give us so ffar from coast to bush to the music scene and proximity to friends and family - its still yet to be beat :)
Sounds good for you guys! Is that an expensive part of Australia to buy land?
@@ThereVirtually Australia is an expensive part of Australia haha :P there are pockets that are more affordable, it was definitely more affordable pre-covid but what can we do... it has the community that supports our visions and values so thats a huge seller!
Goodness yes... a tractor would make life so much easier. Especially on our steep property.
Yes! Our experience has been with a steep property too, so absolute game changer. Our friend is a landscaper so has a lot of knowledge in that department - no wonder it was the first thing he did!
Hi guys, do you know you can replant the spring onion bottoms & they will grow again. cheers and all the best for 2025
Yess!! I normally love doing this! But I think these guys just like to start fresh :)
Heyaa loved the vid
Would defo say 10 years is way too long to get into hobby of hunting for meat esp if youre willing to raise animals farmed for meat as you said yourself :P
But fair if killing an animal is not for you, imo i wouldnt eat meat if i felt that way but yolo
