I think the point of the transporter accident was to show that the Enterprise itself was not fully ready to confront a major crisis. Earlier, Kirk couldn't beam onto the Enterprise because of a transporter problem. That is why Scotty had to take him over to the Enterprise by pod. Plus, there was a scene earlier where Decker and Scotty were working on some problem about a transporter sensor.

Yeah the whole thing doesn't add up. The origin base can't forcibly transport someone to the ship. So if the ship's transporters weren't safe yet, there should have been no way they received that beam, because everyone onboard would have been told to not even use the transporter.

If not for the accident, many would have said the glamour scene where Scotty flies Kirk over was too convenient. Using the defective transporter again for a meaningful plot incident knocks the wind out of that argument!

It takes some reading into, but I figure Kirk stepped in because having seen the explosion in engineering, he knew there was nothing that could be done. Rand was doing everything right, but the system was just plain broken. He stepped in, and it can be debated as to why, but he didn’t want Rand to be the one to have it in her conscience. So he stepped in and took the controls so it wouldn’t happen on her watch. Maybe, I dunno, it’s a thought.
Why Rand was allowed to energize in the first place with the module still under repairs, that’s a whole other question…

The uniforms from TMP were god-awful. So glad they fixed that in Wrath of Khan. And props for not shying away from pointing out Gene's proclivity for skirt-chasing.

I'd heard this was initially being shot as a series, something like Star Trek Continues ( later a fanmade project)but when Star Wars (I think) made a movie, the studio felt they needed a movie. I think that switch over probably caused alot of TMP issues. I love all the Star Trek alumni, Roddenberry, the Shat, even Takei ( who has devoted ALOT of work to fanmade productions of Star Trek). They're all only human. Except for me,of course.

Whitney lived an interesting life. A talented jazz singer, actress, and model. But addictions and poor choices nearly destroyed her. In 1980 she turned her life around in a big way.

I've always thought that the point of the transporter room accident was a over the top visual demonstration that the Enterprise was not ready for service.

At the point were Kirk takes over. Its already Over...Kirk and Mr Scott, know this, Rand probably would know it to. So maybe Kirk, just wants to 'take her hands off a hopless situation and bear it himself, because He likes Rand, and doesnt want her carrying all the intense guilt of losing 2 officers, that way. Yeah, maybe that works out, as a more positive, less, Kirk Hating, take on that serious of events. As far as why this event took place in the first place... I think it accomplished several useful things in the movie. Up to this point, I remember being pretty relaxed about what was likely coming later in the confronation with V'ger. V'ger was clearly not a mindless killer. V'ger did not fireon the Klingons till they fired. And then it was kind of clear to me, that they did not simple destroy the 3, D 7 Cruisers. Even back in 79, at 9-10 years old, I got the sense from the special effects used, that V'ger, had somehow broke down the ships into some kind of 'storage' system. I was not surprised to see the Epsilon 9 station inside the V'ger 'holodeck' later, or the Klingon Ships in there either. So, there are 2 very unsettling scenes in ST TMP. The Transporter incident, and the failure of Warp Drive nearly ending the mission via a collision with an Asteroid. Ive watched other, more thoughtful YT videos, as well, as read articles, and even comments by the main actors invlovled, that those 2 scenes were alot about raising the anxiety and fear, about what was comiing. 'Foreshadowing' of future castrophe, that never quite happened...(because Kirk and Crew, were able to 'outthink' V'ger for the most part in the pivitol moments of the story.) The only other really standout trauma that happens after this, is the taking of Lt Ileia by the V'ger probe. The Plasma Weapons placed above Earth certainly raised the Temp or blood preasure of viewers as well. But both the Transporter, and Warp Failure, greatly increased audience emotional investment into what is happening on screen. The Transporter Scene Ive read was also part of the inspiration, for the early, and surprising death of Samuel L Jackson in 99's, DEEP BLUE SEA. A complete and unexpected surprise, that left the audience wandering...WHERE THE HELL IS THIS STORY GOING... So, I think The Transporter Scene was genius...I know it left an impact on me for the rest of the movie...And life...

Kirk knew they were already dead and took over so that Janice wouldn't have to live with the guilt.

Yep. Agreed. Kirk killed Sonak and Lori Ciana due to his own incompetence. If he had stayed in his lane and allowed Rand to do her job both might still be alive.

Indeed! The scene is just shoehorned in here and two deaths to make a point that Kirk is a control freak is a bit much.
