Found this on IMDB but its pretty impressive, the actress who played Ruby; Emilia Jones spent nine months learning American Sign Language, having singing lessons, and learning how to operate a fishing trawler.
She is impressive, and I'm REALLY impressed at her prep, dedication, and skill. And yet....I'm still disappointed they didn't find an actual CODA for the role. That said...while some CODAs are AMAZING signers...some are very VERY poor signers....and her signing is...good, so it fits the spectrum along which CODAs sign.

@@dr.philmcbill3931, I was perhaps unclear: I wish they had auditioned actors who happened to be CODAs...mainly because I would have preferred to see someone whose signing is at a level of smoothness that would reflect the level of ASL skill that a CODA from an all-Deaf, all-signing family would have. Emilia Jones did an outstanding job, and she clearly worked her butt off, and the Deaf actors had nothing but praise for her hard work and talent as an actor, and I fully respect that and them. I am saying that, personally, I wish her signing looked like the native signer the character was.

I didn't know CODA stood for that! In music terminology a coda is the ending section of a piece of music. Put them both together and it kind of makes this movie a little sadder
I recently read about the generations of deaf Martha's Vineyard residents who worked and communicated with all other islanders before ASL was even being taught. They were farmers, fishermen, shop keepers, every trade. It was a very large percentage of the population and most of them could trace their lineage to a small area in England. A really interesting story. No one was limited, because everyone knew people who were deaf, so everyone knew vineyard sign language. Oh, and CODA is a fantastic movie. Apple needs to stop holding it hostage and let people rent or buy it elsewhere.

Interesting fact. Arresting them for this disability alone is a violation of the americans with disabilities act and can cause the arresting officers/agency a huge lawsuit if thats the only cause. Thats not entirely the case here due to it being a safety concern. But there are alot of legal protections for disabled people.
In most circumstances, yes. But where I’m not sure for ships, I know you can’t pilot a plane without perfect vision (natural or corrected), perfect hearing (natural or corrected) and can barely take any medication. My ADHD meds disqualified me, as did my anxiety meds and one of my depression meds. (They only allow pilots to be on one of four depression medications.) same principle - discrimination. Except not really, since they all can cause you to be a danger behind the wheel while on them. Yes, I could’ve passed a drug test if I wanted but why lie? But let’s say I was deaf and that was it. If I became a commercial pilot by reading lips, and then it came out I was fully deaf? I’d be not only fired but arrested. And I believe the coast guard applies similar rules to boats. You need to be able to see other boats, hear the radio or a ship blowing a horn or someone calling for help. You can have accommodations though, such as someone fully hearing being in charge of the radio. But they didn’t.
Marine vessels by law MUST be able to receive and respond to radio calls, ship's horns, and coast guard traffic. This is a matter of safety of life and limb and takes priority over disability rights. If they sailed into fog, found themselves on a collision course with another vessel, or were in the area of a distress call, them being dead could easily result in the sinking or death of themselves or members of another ship. The coast guard is entirely within their right to arrest these guys for unsafe operation of a vessel, if they tried to counter sue it'd be thrown out at any level.
Ships can throw ADA out the window because it's a safety issue to have hearing individuals run the ship, it is very expensive and thus not required for fishing/work vessels to be accessible to wheel chairs/etc so if you are disabled and want to work in the fishing industry...your options are limited
Great movie!!! About a girl who is the only one out of entire family who is able to hear. She feels trapped by the fact she is needed for their family business, but she wants to move on as an adult to follow her dreams as an individual. Coda is the name of the movie. Five stars!!
I'm glad to see this guy getting his big break in Hollywood. I went to school with his older brother and knew his Dad, who was also hard of hearing and our city's Chief of Police.

Hearing aids only work for some types of deafness, if a person is completely deafness either due to injury or birth defect of the internal structures of the ear, an aid will not do anything because they lack the internal structures to turn vibration into signals the brain can translate into information
At first i thought "im sure they have developed some procedures to compensate for not hearing", but then I saw a coast guard was able to approach him at 5 milrs per hour, board the boat and TAP him on the shoulder without any idea...that is WAY too ignorant of your surroundings to safely operate a ship

If you are referring to the woman on board the boat, she was a federal fishing observer who was initially unaware they were deaf. They put her safety at risk.

Some jobs have physical ability standards. Not meeting them and subsequently not being allowed to do that job is NOT a violation of the disabilities act. If i want to be a trucker, I can't be blind. Same thing goes for pilots, ship officers, train conductors and probably other jobs to that don't even involve driving.
True. When there are safety concerns, the ADA is overwritten. Just like you cannot have a service dog that goes after other dogs. Doesn’t matter if that dog is trained to help you, it isn’t safe to have in public, so it cannot be a service dog.
They make the coast guard and authority to be the bad guys here but....they got a fucking point. These guys cant hear any mayday signals, cant hear weather warnings, cant hear a ships horn and the thousand other things you need to be able to hear when you operate a vessel in rough waters. They endangers others and themselves.
Operating a commercial vessel when none of the crew can hear is extremely dangerous. There needs to be someone on board who can use the radio and hear horns and whistles from other boats. In the movie they normally have the daughter on board and she monitors the radio for them, but she couldnt make it that day so they sailed without her and got caught.
Wow a movie making certain people look bad. My daughter is deaf. I know for a fact deaf people can drive without a hearing person in the car. And most ships/boats are so loud it’s not possible for even hearing crew to hear a call to the ship. deaf fishermen would have flashing lights set up on the boat when a call comes in. Then they would communicate via writing or inputting the words to the other party on the line. The other party would be required if it’s government or a business to have a device to basically text out their messages. It’s the law to accommodate for disabilities.

For those screaming and raving discrimination this and ADA that or Government needs to help that, Commercial fishing is NOT a government job. When you captain a boat YOU AND YOU ALONE are responsible for making sure that ALL safety regulations are met BEFORE the boat leaves port. Even when a boat is apart of a fleet it is the Captains responsibility to do safety checks, including making sure the radio can send and receive transmissions. If you aren’t apart of a fleet you are a self employed captain and ignoring the fact that he needed at least one person who can hear and communicate through ASL he’s lucky he wasn’t stripped of his commercial fishing license and had his boat seized.

There's a thing called "medical inspection". It's required for all things, including being certified to operate a vessel. Hearing check is included in that inspection. The real outcome of this is - they both pay a fine and never go back to sea

As a Coast Guard Vet. They are COMPLETELY right in enforcing them to have hearing personel on board. You have to be able to hear radio calls, and ship whisltes and for emergencies. Its completely justified. All these softies in the comment's simply have never been out on the sea like this

It's about THEIR safety as well. In 1992, a fishing vessel crewed by 5 men who did NOT understand English went shrimping in the Gulf of Mexico - straight into the path of Hurricane Andrew. Over the course of 6 weeks, 4 of the 5 bodies were found... dead, of course. The same situation exists here. Can't hear the radio, can't hear weather reports, distress calls from other vessels, orders from the Coast Guard, and so forth. I was the CG investigating officer for that marine casualty case. Also, in this video, the helm is unmanned... the crew is attending to the fish. That's another gross safety violation. I also investigated a case where a vessel with NO ONE on the bridge hit a vehicular bridge over a canal. The bridge collapsed. Seven (7) people were killed. Including a pregnant woman and her unborn child. A disability is not carte blanche to ignore/disobey the law. This is not discrimination or violation of the ADA.
My ex wife was 90% deaf she could hear good enough to talk over the telephone/read lips and talk as plain as the average person. In her words...Hearing people so so stupid deaf people more smart deaf people play tricks on hearing people. HA HA. She was always taking out BS warrants on me lieing/accusing me of things I hadn't done.... Playing tricks. I'd end up getting arrested and jailed for 48.... on to court for a bond hearing then bonded out....go to court....lost time from work..... spending 💰 on attorneys. The DA would represent her and the court would provide her an interpreter. They'd have it layed over to the max and at times the judge would extend them up to 4/5 times taking up to 5/6/7 months before finally being trialed. When she would be questioned she would drag it out between herself the DA and the interpreter I not understand I not understand I not understand. This would go on up to 1/2/3 hours at times and all day at times with the judge calling for recesses telling them to get it together and let's get it tried and over with or putting it off... last case at the end of the day. Every time the judge would call the case back up to be tried it was the same thing' I not understand I not understand until the judge would say' you haven't presented any evidence to the court... case dismissed. My time and money waisted The courts time and taxpayers money waited on judges/DA/interpreters. BS charges on my record. Not gonna say what I'd like to call her....an idiot playing tricks on hearing people. Watch TH-cam delete my comment again for telling the truth. Very sorry to hear this happen to you. Oftentimes peoples sympathy towards those with disabilities ends up turning into pity which leads to never holding them accountable for their actions. Being blind or deaf doesn't mean you're also cognitively impaired.
Reminds me of a clip where another ASL interpreter ended up translating a rant of a deaf guy, who i think is a trucker, to some community counsel or somethings and she really let out the same energy that guy was giving off

They weren't allowed to operate a motor vehicle without aid in the first place so they are in the wrong, which means they will not be compensated in court. So maybe YOU should look up those laws.
This is my biggest gripe as a former Coastie. Any reasonable Coastie would have just assumed that their radio was too low or busted and boarded with safety in mind. This guy was waaayyy too aggressive but either way the voyage would have been terminated once the truth was realized. You need someone who can hear onboard to answer radio calls.

That’s why it pisses me off when people, who are not deaf or hard of hearing, go around saying “being deaf barely affects your life, they’re like everybody else”… That’s not how physiology and physics work buddy, someone who can’t hear, well… CAN’T HEAR 😂 Recently listened to a podcast where the hosts had to choose between two options, and one of them said “yeah i’ll choose being deaf. It’s a cool community and you can live without any issues anyway”… how delusional are over-woke people that they feel like they need to downplay a disability that takes away one of your most important senses and mention of the “community” and “deaf culture” are cool…
While im can't speak on being deaf I was temporarily blind after a massive head injury. Yes there are measures in place to make things easier, key word being easier, for people with disabilities or who are missing a sense. That doesn't however make it easy. Deaf is still deaf no matter how many people learn sign language. You still can't hear things like the fire alarm going off or the radio. You can get around that sure, I believe they have something that violently rocks your bed in case of a fire, subtitles for movies, print outs for audio etc. But that doesn't change the fact you can't hear. Yes I could navigate by touching the hospital wall or asking someone. I could use the cane thingy to some extent. That doesn't help whe I need to read a sign up on top of a door or figure out where in the mazeof hallways I am exactly. It's not like I could just look at a map. I thankfully recovered even if I do need glasses to drive now. But most people don't get better they get worse or stay the same when their senses are removed. I can't stand it when people trivialize the struggles others go through. Easier doesn't mean easy. It just means that we have adapted in some ways to accommodate those who aren't 100% able bodied, or have full use of their senses.
Yeah, if they refuse getting any supporting equipment or a person who can fucking hear ship radio/horns. Then they violate multiple safety regulations to operate the boat. Anyone going to be pissy about having them be taken by Coast Guard when they barrel their boat into another and kill people?
In order to keep your sea going license one must undergo extensive physical checkups every two years. Proper hearing is one of the items being checked.

ASL should be standard in schools. Not to mention Spanish Arabic and Chinese as well. All US students should be fluent in at least one of these languages besides English by the time the get a GED equivalent. As well as firearms trained and qualified but that's another matter.

There's a lot of reasons why it is required to have a hearing person on the boat. One thing the waters off Massachusetts are known for is weather. A fog bank comes in and you can't see a thing. You also can't hear the other boat with his fog horn blasting as he's approaching. You can't hear the Coast Guard when they're trying to direct you in. Then there's the boat itself, where you can't hear the engine running to tell if there's a problem.
Being the person that hears for him is not being “the breadwinner” This scenario is pretty dumb honestly, they work with him but they don’t know he’s deaf? That’s something you figure out pretty quick without people telling you.

I recently read about the generations of deaf Martha's Vineyard residents who worked and communicated with all other islanders before ASL was even being taught. They were farmers, fishermen, shop keepers, every trade. It was a very large percentage of the population and most of them could trace their lineage to a small area in England. A really interesting story. No one was limited, because everyone knew people who were deaf, so everyone knew vineyard sign language. Oh, and CODA is a fantastic movie. Apple needs to stop holding it hostage and let people rent or buy it elsewhere.

Interesting fact. Arresting them for this disability alone is a violation of the americans with disabilities act and can cause the arresting officers/agency a huge lawsuit if thats the only cause. Thats not entirely the case here due to it being a safety concern. But there are alot of legal protections for disabled people.
In most circumstances, yes. But where I’m not sure for ships, I know you can’t pilot a plane without perfect vision (natural or corrected), perfect hearing (natural or corrected) and can barely take any medication. My ADHD meds disqualified me, as did my anxiety meds and one of my depression meds. (They only allow pilots to be on one of four depression medications.) same principle - discrimination. Except not really, since they all can cause you to be a danger behind the wheel while on them. Yes, I could’ve passed a drug test if I wanted but why lie? But let’s say I was deaf and that was it. If I became a commercial pilot by reading lips, and then it came out I was fully deaf? I’d be not only fired but arrested.
And I believe the coast guard applies similar rules to boats. You need to be able to see other boats, hear the radio or a ship blowing a horn or someone calling for help. You can have accommodations though, such as someone fully hearing being in charge of the radio. But they didn’t.

That's not how that works.
Marine vessels by law MUST be able to receive and respond to radio calls, ship's horns, and coast guard traffic. This is a matter of safety of life and limb and takes priority over disability rights. If they sailed into fog, found themselves on a collision course with another vessel, or were in the area of a distress call, them being dead could easily result in the sinking or death of themselves or members of another ship.
The coast guard is entirely within their right to arrest these guys for unsafe operation of a vessel, if they tried to counter sue it'd be thrown out at any level.
Ships can throw ADA out the window because it's a safety issue to have hearing individuals run the ship, it is very expensive and thus not required for fishing/work vessels to be accessible to wheel chairs/etc so if you are disabled and want to work in the fishing industry...your options are limited
Great movie!!! About a girl who is the only one out of entire family who is able to hear. She feels trapped by the fact she is needed for their family business, but she wants to move on as an adult to follow her dreams as an individual. Coda is the name of the movie. Five stars!!

in the movie, CODA, their daughter is usually with them and she can hear. she couldn’t come the day of the inspection because she had music practice. her music teacher was tired of her missing or being late so he said if she missed one more practice she was done. she was also sick of working on her family’s boat at the expense of her own life. their family has to go to court over this, but it works out that she spends less time on the boat and she tells her teacher about what’s going on and they make their practice schedule around the boat schedule. she ends up going to college for music and i think her family hires a hearing person to be on the boat with them. (not sure about that last bit)
Hearing aids only work for some types of deafness, if a person is completely deafness either due to injury or birth defect of the internal structures of the ear, an aid will not do anything because they lack the internal structures to turn vibration into signals the brain can translate into information

Some jobs have physical ability standards. Not meeting them and subsequently not being allowed to do that job is NOT a violation of the disabilities act. If i want to be a trucker, I can't be blind. There needs to be someone on board who can use the radio and hear horns and whistles from other boats.
In the movie they normally have the daughter on board and she monitors the radio for them, but she couldnt make it that day so they sailed without her and got caught.

Wow a movie making certain people look bad. My daughter is deaf. I know for a fact deaf people can drive without a hearing person in the car. And most ships/boats are so loud it’s not possible for even hearing crew to hear a call to the ship. deaf fishermen would have flashing lights set up on the boat when a call comes in. Then they would communicate via writing or inputting the words to the other party on the line. The other party would be required if it’s government or a business to have a device to basically text out their messages. It’s the law to accommodate for disabilities.

For those screaming and raving discrimination this and ADA that or Government needs to help that, Commercial fishing is NOT a government job. When you captain a boat YOU AND YOU ALONE are responsible for making sure that ALL safety regulations are met BEFORE the boat leaves port. Even when a boat is apart of a fleet it is the Captains responsibility to do safety checks, including making sure the radio can send and receive transmissions. If you aren’t apart of a fleet you are a self employed captain and ignoring the fact that he needed at least one person who can hear and communicate through ASL he’s lucky he wasn’t stripped of his commercial fishing license and had his boat seized.
So how is she the breadwinner? When all she does is answer to radio signals, bell sounds, and other noises the man can’t hear? Who is literally putting his life in the line to not only support his family, but many other families to eat, and have a place to sleep?

Legal requirements which they were not in full compliance with since there wasn't someone there who could operate it. I myself as a truck driver need to be able to read, and speak English & hear sounds at volume of a elevated whisper from a couple meters away.

Hearing impairment is a disability, true. But this seems like they could just add some lights or a cellphone on vibrate, and have one deaf person on lookout in the cabin at all times.
There's a thing called "medical inspection". It's required for all things, including being certified to operate a vessel. Hearing check is included in that inspection. The real outcome of this is - they both pay a fine and never go back to sea

As a Coast Guard Vet. They are COMPLETELY right in enforcing them to have hearing personel on board. You have to be able to hear radio calls, and ship whisltes and for emergencies. Its completely justified. All these softies in the comment's simply have never been out on the sea like this

It's about THEIR safety as well. In 1992, a fishing vessel crewed by 5 men who did NOT understand English went shrimping in the Gulf of Mexico - straight into the path of Hurricane Andrew. Over the course of 6 weeks, 4 of the 5 bodies were found... dead, of course. The same situation exists here. Can't hear the radio, can't hear weather reports, distress calls from other vessels, orders from the Coast Guard, and so forth. I was the CG investigating officer for that marine casualty case. Also, in this video, the helm is unmanned... the crew is attending to the fish. That's another gross safety violation. I also investigated a case where a vessel with NO ONE on the bridge hit a vehicular bridge over a canal. The bridge collapsed. Seven (7) people were killed. Including a pregnant woman and her unborn child. A disability is not carte blanche to ignore/disobey the law. This is not discrimination or violation of the ADA.

The DA would represent her and the court would provide her an interpreter. They'd have it layed over to the max and at times the judge would extend them up to
4/5 times taking up to 5/6/7 months before finally being trialed. When she would be questioned she would drag it out between herself the DA and the interpreter

Very sorry to hear this happen to you. Oftentimes peoples sympathy towards those with disabilities ends up turning into pity which leads to never holding them accountable for their actions.

They weren't allowed to operate a motor vehicle without aid in the first place so they are in the wrong, which means they will not be compensated in court. So maybe YOU should look up those laws.
This is my biggest gripe as a former Coastie. Any reasonable Coastie would have just assumed that their radio was too low or busted and boarded with safety in mind. This guy was waaayyy too aggressive but either way the voyage would have been terminated once the truth was realized. You need someone who can hear onboard to answer radio calls.

how delusional are over-woke people that they feel like they need to downplay a disability that takes away one of your most important senses and mention of the “community” and “deaf culture” are cool…
While im can't speak on being deaf I was temporarily blind after a massive head injury. Yes there are measures in place to make things easier, key word being easier, for people with disabilities or who are missing a sense. That doesn't however make it easy. Deaf is still deaf no matter how many people learn sign language. You still can't hear things like the fire alarm going off or the radio. You can get around that sure, I believe they have something that violently rocks your bed in case of a fire, subtitles for movies, print outs for audio etc. But that doesn't change the fact you can't hear.
Yes I could navigate by touching the hospital wall or asking someone. I could use the cane thingy to some extent. That doesn't help whe I need to read a sign up on top of a door or figure out where in the mazeof hallways I am exactly. It's not like I could just look at a map. I thankfully recovered even if I do need glasses to drive now.
But most people don't get better they get worse or stay the same when their senses are removed.
I can't stand it when people trivialize the struggles others go through. Easier doesn't mean easy. It just means that we have adapted in some ways to accommodate those who aren't 100% able bodied, or have full use of their senses.

Yeah, if they refuse getting any supporting equipment or a person who can fucking hear ship radio/horns. Then they violate multiple safety regulations to operate the boat. Anyone going to be pissy about having them be taken by Coast Guard when they barrel their boat into another and kill people?

In order to keep your sea going license one must undergo extensive physical checkups every two years. Proper hearing is one of the items being checked.

ASL should be standard in schools. Not to mention Spanish Arabic and Chinese as well. All US students should be fluent in at least one of these languages besides English by the time the get a GED equivalent. As well as firearms trained and qualified but that's another matter.
I mean I get it. Shit like this is difficult. However. The coast guard was 10000% right. First off he’s putting him and his son’s life at risk. Not to mention anyone else out there. How the hell are they supposed to radio for help or for anything if one little thing goes wrong?? I mean it’s just complete negligence to go out there with not one hearing individual. Also I know the daughter is usually there. But still. Also this problem doesn’t exist. I figured there is a solution already. And there is. Look it up if you’re interested.
There's a lot of reasons why it is required to have a hearing person on the boat. One thing the waters off Massachusetts are known for is weather. A fog bank comes in and you can't see a thing. You also can't hear the other boat with his fog horn blasting as he's approaching. You can't hear the Coast Guard when they're trying to direct you in. Then there's the boat itself, where you can't hear the engine running to tell if there's a problem.
Being the person that hears for him is not being “the breadwinner”

That’s something you figure out pretty quick without people telling you.
