- Old Abandoned Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Line Put Back In Use! See How Steam Engines Get Water & Watch Steam Powered Passenger Trains Pass By. Close Look At Rail Over A Century Old And Still In Use. This Is The Cass Scenic Railroad In Cass, West Virginia. Includes Look At Shop Yard From Above.
Back to Cass Scenic Railroad State Park for some more coal burning steam locomotive action. Trains are finally running once again after decades between Cass and Durbin, West Virginia. The line along the river had been out of service for years and years due to wash outs. This track used to be Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. This is the line that Cass Railroad had an interchange with to access the outside world. The line is no longer in use west of Cass and has been removed. Cass is connected to the national rail network at the top of the mountain but no longer by the bottom.
Look how old this rail is. Well over a hundred years old and still in use. We also see a historic post indicator valve for fire sprinklers/ fire header isolation valve. This is the only place where I have see something like that. Does anyone know anything about these? I would like to know how old they are. Years ago I was a fire fighter for a couple of small country departments but never saw anything like this.
We also have an unusual view of the Shay locomotives from up on the hillside. These are old logging locomotives with outside gears. This is just a short video today. I will have a long video tomorrow. I have a Steam Trains playlist with over 100 videos. It is at the bottom of my page.
Filmed in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!
Please thumbs up and watch another JawTooth video to help my channel.

What an awesome steam train 🚂 🚆 video from Brian. I loved it.
Thank you very much!
Another great video Jaw Tooth. 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
JT those engineers on those steam engines knew how to blow those whistles were that one on the Canadian Pacific he didn’t know how to blow that whistle he was trying to blow it like a regular train horn but these that you took today made goosebumps pop up on my arms But anyway, my friend another awesome video and as always you stay safe out there and watch your back and we’ll see you tomorrow
It is interesting to see how different engineers use the whistles. Some of them are pretty good at it. They sure are loud when you are standing next to the locomotives. Thanks for watching Timmy!
Merci beaucoup pour cette très belle vidéo comme toujours ! ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨👍
Thanks for watching!
@@JawTooth De rien. Bonne journée !

Those dogs are always playing games with each other. 😊
We are very blessed to have such great animals and that they get along very well. We are actually thinking about doing another dog rescue. I want to get another one and I am thinking about starting my own small rescue of some sort. I need some buildings and help with it
Steam engines are so awesome to watch. Thanks for sharing.

Id love to visit Cass eventually
You should. It is a must see for all rail fans
Great to see them running on the greenbrier line
Great video JT; thanks for sharing 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it!
That opening scene could be right back in late 1800s Cass JT! Great vantage spot you got there to see the steam engine being filled with water. Very interesting. It's such a beautiful place to visit. Love seeing Loki & Chessie playing together, so funny. 😂❤🐕👍
Cool, thanks for watching !
This is so cool and enjoyable. Love these steam engines trains.❤This is really interesting watching the steam train filled with water. Loved this so much.❤You did good on these cool captures wow! Awesome fire hydrant too.Oj yes Chessie versus Loki. Oh no...poor Chessie. Sweet fur babies. Thanks and God.bless you.❤😊
Thank you very much! God Bless you also Beulah!
I have never seen water be put into a steam engine before! What a cool process! Thanks for the Cass Railroad content!
That is a must see railroad. They have quite a few operating steamers and several routes that you can ride. The ride up the mountain is really awesome!
Happy Friday! Steam Power and West Virginia.Wonderful combination.
Hi, happy Friday, how are you doing today?
@@the-terrible63 I am well.Hope you are doing good also.
@@train1962 I'm doing good too, thanks for asking.
Thanks! You too! Gonna be a great weekend!
Awesome video thanks Brian
Thank You JT! All those shots were fantastic!
thanks!
Nicely done,,thanks for sharing this history,,😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Boy Scout summer camp always included a visit to Cass when I was a kid, great stuff.
There's a book, "Tumult on the Mountains," by Roy Clarkson, that tells the tale of West Virginia lumbering.
Awesome! Wish our Boy Scout troop would have gone there. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic
Thank you so much 😀
Eeee! As they'd say here in North Yorkshire UK. That's a fine piece of narrow gauge video JT. Very much appreciated seeing the running shed at the Cass Railroad and a very nice shot of Shay #11 with its train. I like the water feed from the tower. Over here we usually have a pipe with a long leather hose around 6inch in diameter to feed the water into the tender tank. It's always been known among railwayman as "putting the bag in". Most crews will take water at any available opportunity so they're ready for anything!
Not narrow guage it's standered
Thanks for that. I thought it looked bigger than the 3ft6in that the book I was looking in said. I have worked on standard and 2ft gauge lines during my 77 years and enjoy anything that runs on steam!
If you ever get over to the UK do visit the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which is standard gauge and the Ffestiniog Railway in North Wales which is 2ft gauge and the oldest narrow gauge railway in the world still operating on its original site and company.
I filmed them taking water from a creek to load a tender on this line on the Durbin section of track. I don't know if I ever posted that. They stopped right next to a creek and dropped a 6 inch line into it and then filled er up. Thanks for watching and commenting! I would love to see a 2 foot gauge line
So cool to watch water filling. JT production delivers again 😊
Awesome vid
thanks!
I was hoping to see how they water the engine... very interesting to see how things work.
The one steam engine is getting filled with water and over flowing. Thanks for watching!
Such a cool video JT!
Thanks!
Case is GREAT ! I'm LOOKING forward to visiting Case next year.
It really is! I hope you have a great time there
Amazing video JT thanks have a great weekend Sir from Scotland 😊
Thanks, you too! thanks for being here so early
@@JawTooth your welcome JT thanks very much 😊
one of my favorite places.....dont get up there as much as i like but cant wait to ride the rails again.
Couldn't agree more!
Always great videos! What do you use to shoot your videos with? I love watching your steam videos, I just can’t breathe around them anymore, but thanks to you I can still watch 👍👍👍👍👍🚑🚒
Thanks for the video, JT! I appreciate seeing all of the old things. History was my favorite subject in school, and I love that you add some to your presentations. If you had the opportunity to do this in the future, I, for one, would greatly enjoy it. It was fun to see Chessie and Loki playing, too! I hope you, your family, and all of your pets have a great weekend! 😃😃😃😃❤❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it Gary and have a great weekend!
@@JawTooth Thank you, JT! 😃😃😃
I grew up playing and fishing from what was left of the base of an old water tower used to put water in steam engines back on the day.
Awesome! I bet the area was really different back then
Love the railroad archaeology
Thanks!
Also happy Friday on your video keep making more content we always enjoy your videos especially your other crews that likes trains too
Thanks! Will do!
The Cass Shop would had been really cool if it had old vintage cars in the parking lot.
that reminds me. I filmed them with a vintage car on the track and they were doing an old fashioned instruction hand off at the station with the metal thing that catches the orders. I filmed that and need to post it. I forgot I had that
Another terrific video of Cass, man I miss West Virginia!
thanks for watching!
Hands down, you have to love steam.
Yes for sure. I am a huge steam lover and I have a Steam Trains playlist with more. Thanks for watching!
Good morning Jaw Tooth.
Hello there William and yes, today is a great day with perfect weather
If you are still in Cass, go to Greenbank and take some video of the radio telescopes and visit the welcome center there. You are only 20 minutes away.
We went there. They don't want it photographed though. It was an interesting place
Thank you for this additional video of railfanning at the Cass Scenic Railroad, Jaw Tooth! Watching the fireman fill the tender of engine #2 with water was fascinating. The fireman added the water in a quick and efficient manner. You found a convenient location to capture the passenger train as it continued to Durbin, West Virginia. Did you go on the passenger train to Durbin, West Virginia? Is there a possible video a train trip to Durbin in the future? (Posted 19 July 2024 ar 1159 CDT.)
I did ride both ends but not the entire length. A couple years ago I posted a ride on here from Durbin and from Cass. I have video to put together still of a couple of short rides. I will post them soon I hope. Thanks for watching!
JawTooth 👌👌🚂🚃🚆
Great video
Thanks 👍👍👍
Thank you too!
Excellent video. The hydrant is probably for fire control. The original sawmill burned about 1959.
The geared loco’s are amazing. So much power.
Yes, I think the valve is for the fire suppression equipment for the buildings that burned. That is what I have come to conclude. thanks for watching!
That was awesome!
Glad you liked it!
I'll be honest I'm not big on steam and I don't know why, I love Trains and even the infrastructure but steam just doesn't inject the hysteria but I love all that you do for us and you seem to enjoy them so the least I can do is watch em, thanks JT.
Thats fair. I have notice that my regular diesel freight train videos actually do better. My steam train videos do have a nice little trickle of views over time though . Thanks for watching!
This is a beautiful Heisler locomotive like one that I've been fireman for up in Willetts California.
It figures that the Fireman on this engine would get out to put water in the tender and the safety would go off while he's not attending! 😂 Stuff happens!
Thanks for the wonderful videos!
Thank you very much! My knowledge of steam trains is a little weak lol
Shay locomotives😍I just rode this. #11 took me up to Bald Knob. Switch back. Such an experience. Them boys work so hard. Had a blast. Best birthday ever. Hi JT🚂
Excellent love the live steam
Thanks 👍
Great sharing I love seeing the old steam engine next to the old wooden water tower! Love the railroad history!
Cool.
Yes, even have a caboose for you!
@@JawTooth I appreciate it.
That wasn't a fire hydrant. It was a PIV --Post Indicator Valve. They are used to open or close a valve in an underground pipeline. Many times they control fire protection water lines but they can be used for general service water.
very interesting! I will look that up. Thanks for the information!
The sound of those old steam whistles bouncing off the landscape is something special. One of the few ways to really time-travel. Thanks for posting!
Couldn't agree more! I am glad that the video picks that up
Was there about 20 years ago. Nice to see it again.
I have a lot of videos from Cass in my Steam Trains playlist. I have train races from there and videos with 5 locomotives running at once
cool stuff mate
Thanks!
I like train videos on TH-cam jawtooth dpu alright 👍
Great video! I have the caboose rented on the Great smoky mountain railway next month to take the whole family. This will be the third time I've rented it, but now we have grandkids to take! Hearing those steam engines blowing their whistles ramps up the anticipation! Thanks Jaw Tooth!
I visited Cass in 2007 with my wife at the time and loved it very much, love the whistle echoing in the valley😊 I would like to go back there someday.
Sounds great!
Always like to hear about steam trains!
Me too. This year I want to get at least 10 operating to break my record of 9. I have 6 so far. Cass is a must see location for all railfans
ayyyyyy the 604 tender looking good. Cant wait for BCG #4 to come back
Steam engines are a metal work of art, excellent video
Yes they are!
WICKED!!! was COOL to see the shay steamer getting water...what a NEAT type of steam engine!!!!👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it!

You found a superior vantage point. Good job, JT!
Thank you!!

What is it with this old stuff we can't seem to get enough of. old tractors old semi trucks old construction equipment classic cars trucks . Vintage motorcycle. Steam trains. Heck even old toys radio's records old tins . antiques furnitures. Oil and gas stuff like signs gaspumps🤔🚂🚃🚃🚃
Thanks for watching!
@@JawTooth thanks for the trains🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃
Yes, those old things have soul
Nostalgia.
I'm right there with you. Especially the one's that still run because they just seem to be alive. It's the sound's and the smell of things like steam and burning cola. 1976 I was a kid in Salt Lake City and some houses still had coal stoves. I loved winter and lived next to the railway. This video made me 8 years old again for a few minutes
Cass is special. 😼
That place is something else. We are fortunate to have something like this
Yes, we are! I would love to be able to go there again! 😼
I grew up going to my local Steam Engine and threshing bee show. Love the smell of burning coal.
Thank you, Señor Jaws. That reminded me to drink more water. What I have been drinking is too much Pepsi Ligera (light)... about the same amount as the steam train received in water. It does make one wonder... could the steam train run on Pepsi Light? RT sends/envía, Colonia Centro Histórico, Puebla, México..
Me too, need more water instead of Red Bull and Mountain Dew Lol. thanks for watching This fine Friday afternoon!
Cass is one of my favorite places.
Nice Video
Thanks
I love all your videos, Jaw tooth but this one takes the cake. I stepped back in time when they watered up the numbers two. The dogs playing tug of war twister was funny. Keep up the great work. If you can call it work. Looks how fun can pay.:)
Great video as always. Let me ask you if you had a pick one place to train spot where would that be. I turned 63 on July 24. Thank you for the great video video.
That is awesome! Happy birthday Mark! Thanks for being here!
That has got to be fun to see and ride!
It sure is. I love the remote area also. You should visit there some day
I am too old and stove up to do much traveling anymore. That is why I enjoy your videos so much. @@JawTooth
