  • The English author and artist Ron Ranson was kind enough to allow me to film a private lesson with him in February 2013, just after his 88th birthday! He demonstrates the use of the hake brush that he popularized so many years ago.

    For any of you who have watched this or will soon, please know that Ron Ranson passed away on December 9th. He was in a care facility near his home in Oregon. I spoke to his wife Darlis and she asked me to notify using the social media accounts. He was just over a month shy of turning 92. A great advocate of watercolor, popular teacher and prolific author, and a fine English gentleman who loved his wife dearly.

      I was saddened to hear of Mr. Ranson's passing from your contact with Dave Usher, Mike. I have several of his books and (try) to paint with his brand of hakes. I offer my sincere condolences to his family and my respect and admiration for this wonderful artist and gentleman.

    I taught watercolor painting in my public school art classes to seventh grade students using a library of Ron Ransom videotapes, using only 2" hake brushes, 1" flat brushes, and rigger brushes. Our paints included only a pair of warm and cool reds, blues, and yellows. Ron's books and videos conveyed the essence of watercolor like no other teacher could. My goal was for middle school students to be able to relate to watercolor artists, to recognize watercolor paintings, and to feel competent with a simple array of art brushes, paper, and paints. I will never forget Ron Ransom's mastery of virgin washes punctuated with calligraphic details.

    If any are Ron Ranson aspirants who are interested in connecting with other Ransonites, I have started a Facebook group called "Ron Ranson Disciples (Fast and Loose, Big Brush Watercolours)". We would welcome new members.

    Seeing Rons Hands takes me back 50 years to my first Memory of My Grandfather. His hands although showing signs of age moved with Grace and Confidence .No wasted movements or fumbling. Actions speak louder than words and watching Ron Paint is a pleasure. TY

    Ron came to Montana to teach a class when he was maybe in his early eighties. I was watching one of his DVDs tonight for some much needed encouragement and thought I would look to see if he was still with us. I found this vidio and it brought tears of joy to my eyes. What a wonderful gift to have Ron as a good friend. What a beautiful person he is and what treasures he has given all of us who have had the pleasure of being taught by him. Please give him regards and love from us Montana Artists.

    Well, Stephen David Rathburn, I just happened upon Ron Ranson's video this morning, October 9, 2018. I am sincerely loving the simplicity he puts into the process of his paintings. I should be packing up my belongings as my house just sold and I need to move on, but I am mesmerized; I guess that means I am supposed to put the packing off for the moment. Thank you Ron, for teaching me to simplify, simplify, simplify; so much easier than struggle, like you said, no need to paint every leaf, so-to-speak!

      You can not imagine how much I appreciate your answer. I feel honored ... I recently had the blessing of buying a bundle of 5 of Rons books. I have learnt more about how watercolour through his advise than any course. The books are out of print now so I feel very lucky as my watercolour skills have vastly improved since following Rons advise and the books are a joy to read. Ron wrote that his books are completely different to other art books out there that all say the same old things about how to watercolour and the reader comes away learning very little and not improving their skills. So his approach to explain the ‘secrets’ of how to watercolour are that you have to ‘Read’ his explanations rather than the usual ‘follow this lovely study’ which he says is basically copying how that particular artist works, when you should be learning the skills yourself. Wonderful man so logical. Thank you Ron Ranson. My deepest condolences to your family, you are a great loss but you are still Teaching and the best out there! 🌷🎨🖌 Edit: Forgot to mention…I also bought the Ron Ranson Hake brushes and love them.

    • @beebee8018
      @beebee8018 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tmikeporter Yes: My confidence has grown now that I have learnt the ‘real’ skills to watercolour and have had to paint ‘my way’ not copy someone else. It has been a real eye opener because I got so confused trying to teach myself how to paint by following all these different artists ways that I did become ‘blocked’ and wanted to know why I was not getting my own style. As I read Rons books I get out my brushes and paint box painting what Ron advises which is much more affective rather than copying a set of photos and within hours ‘I had it’ and feel like I have come out of shut box! 🙂 for now I can paint what I want and feel freer instead of frustration. You were very blessed to have known Ron and sit by him as he painted. 🌷🎨🖌

      I'll tell Darlis as I'm due to call her and check in which I do every month or so. What's your name? Was the party in England at Clanna Gardens? What year was that? She will be delighted that you posted here. You can also respond to my email at tmikeporter@gmail.com

      Yes, a favorite phrase of his...he was a proponent of "pure watercolor" like so many who painted in the English tradition. There is in the UK a Pure Watercolor Society.

    Thank you for the video Mike! I have several of Ron's DVDs and books where he says he used Bockingford paper. I have some Bockingford Aquarelle 140lb paper, but can't seem to get the same results as Ron. Do you know which type of Bockingford paper he used?

      I found the same problem. I have had luck with the 14x11 Strathmore Windpower watercolor pad. 15 pages for about 13.99. Michaels always sends out 40% off one item coupons so that's how I get them affordable. I tried the series 400 Strathmore and it did not perform like the paper Ron worked on in his dvd's. At this point, I am about 10 pads in on Windpower and the seem to behave like I want them.

    He uses the Ron Ranson Large Hake from Pro Art. He is also using raw sienna here and not yellow ochre. In several of his books he mentions his dislike for yellow ochre and uses raw sienna mixed with burnt umber or with lemon yellow for a range of ochres. Also, in his books he greatly praises the Cotman line of watercolors.

    • @tmikeporter
      @tmikeporter  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ron will tell you that Cotman is just fine as a watercolor paint brand for a new painter to learn on, but he certainly recognizes the difference of an artist grade paint. He used Cheap Joe's paints at the end of his workshop career which are made by DaVinci; and Ron was teaching workshops at Cheap Joe's so he was given those paints freely by the company.

      About 85, I'm thinking. He was almost 90 when he died. He still had his wits about him in this video and knew how to stress and demonstrate the principles he'd espoused in his workshops and books. Quite a guy. Lucky me to have known him as I did.

    Thank you, Mike, for sharing this gem. Could you remember the title of the book(s) Ron is refering to during the demos (appearing at the left side of the drawing table at 19:10 min.). Kind regards.

    • @tmikeporter
      @tmikeporter  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jake Matlet At first I thought it was his book Ranson on Skies (which I recommend by the way), but now after viewing the video again, I think it is a different book. I filmed this 2 yrs ago and just cannot recall that detail, sorry. His referral during this last demo was actually another painting positioned above the book. Watch this last demo again and you'll see a shot of it. He was showing me how to reproduce that painting, or rather, its effects. I don't think the book was a part of the exercise.

    Soy autodidacta y, lo poco que se, lo he aprendido de Ron Ranson.
    Compré sus libros y, ahora en estos vídeos, he sentido la emoción de verle pintar en vivo.
    Ójala pueda hacerle llegar a él la inspiración que ha sido y es para mí su obra tan viva y sugerente. Sus atmósferas me cautivaron desde la primera vez que vi sus acuarelas.
    Muchísimas gracias, Mike Porter por este regalo. Jamás pensé llegar a estar tan cerca de Ron.
    Desde España, un abrazo para ambos.

    • @tmikeporter
      @tmikeporter  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +rick tracey As I recall it was a book, his authorship, on either Seago or Wesson. I recommend both books if you like the English landscape tradition. Also Steve Hall has done two books on Wesson which are quite good. This was filmed three years ago now, so I cannot be absolutely sure of the book from from rematching the video my guess is most likely.
