    Glad to hear positive things about this hb ratchet I’ve had mine for a while and has done well. Like you said the big draw back is that damn switch. Bump it the least little bit and it either switches direction or goes into neutral most of the time when you finally get it worked into the tiny little pain in the ass place and you can’t reach it to switch it back.

    • @BeardedSeabee82

      +GoGetYourOwnGear yup, the switch is bit of pain, but was pverall impressed at price for what you get, it will have a nice little home in toolbag in back of my truck though for sure.

    switch doesn't bother me because i always grab the socket and pre check at what direction its going, just a habit of mine,i love these ratchets and i would use them in a professional field if that was my job.

    • @BeardedSeabee82
      @BeardedSeabee82  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      direction of selector switch is kinda personal preference, what did bother me most was probably when I would go to remove one spark plug, set down in off position, finish removing spark plug rest of way (recessed about 14") go to next, grab ratchet by handle put back on extensions and ratchet would free spin because switch went to neutral. Outside of that, good starter ratchet (junior/new mechanics), good home ratchet, decent backup.

    I spent 4 years in a snap on box with snap on tools that the organization I worked for paid for and now had to supply my own tools on a budget. Everything I own minus 2 tools is craftsman or harbor freight and I don't get the "they're not for professional use" comments. I rip forklifts and heavy everything apart every day and fucking LOVE my hazard fraud shit

    • @BeardedSeabee82
      @BeardedSeabee82  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL, I understand that people on budgets love their hft. Good friend of mine helps run his family farm, their orchard, hydroponic greenhouses etc, he has the hft 44" box filled with variety of tools for working on all their stuff, and he owns all the hft pro ratchets. (yes i am getting to a point here) He has same issue with the switches on all his ratchets (set it down easy, then go to pick it up and switch goes off into free float land). To him, spending more money on higher end tools isnt worth it to him as he lives in the country and its an hour in any direction to hft, and no tool trucks that way. Chain saws though he owns Stihl, and after buying his first stihl saw several years ago he will never go back to poulon (orchard and wood stove heat keeps him busy with regular chainsaw use). Me, I own a poulon chain saw and am happy with what i have. point of this vid is that for what i do, it didnt work well for me, even just changing spark plugs in semi's with switch wanting to do its own thing made me want to throw it across the shop every time i tried using it.

      @BeardedSeabee82  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Rob Basich for home use or occasional use wont disagree a bit. I have told people starting out turning wrenches to hold off on tool trucks. But when you are swinging ratchets for good part of day (where milwaukee impacts wont fit lol) that is where some differences come in. Thank you for watching!

      @stauguastine 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ItsMeLonelyLol I am with you Matt, Snap-On is overrated anymore. Years ago it was a big difference in quality from tool trucks vs. Sears Craftsman etc. Not anymore, and if there is it is not enough to warrant the price. Manufacturing has come a long way since I started out 36 years ago. Also, others haven't figured out that many tools, hand tools too, from Snap-On are no longer made in the USA. I watched a review of the Snap-On vs. the PB Pro, yes the Snap-On too a little over 290 ft-lbs of torque to sheer the anvil. The PB Pro was like 276 ft-lbs. Let's call it 15 ft-lbs of torque difference, not worth the price difference in my opinion. I haven't had any issues with PB Pro or Icon. Like I have said before, I turn wrenches to make money not hand it over to the tool guy.

      It isnt a terrible ratchet by any means, does make decent spare or loaner for shop use. Good for home trunk etc. But akin price wise to this one (when its not on sale) for full time use there are better options (the switch is the one thing i truly hate on it lol, if they get that figured out it would make it soo much better)

    I use my Pittsburghs next to my Snap On and Gearwrench ratchets. The switch does not really bug me. If I could change anything it would be making them plain handled. The great part of the Pittsburgh ratchets is that I can add a bunch of different configurations for all situations dirt cheap and with a lifetime warranty.

    • @BeardedSeabee82
      @BeardedSeabee82  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steed Andersen very true and great points, the switched being reversed doesnt bug me more so than personal preference deal, but the switch being extreemly non positive (aside from trying each ratchet out to find one that is half way positive in its switch) is my (and many others') biggest overall complaint on these ratchets. Bang for buck wise, like i said... for home use, beginner, or back up, should get job done fairly decently

  • @BruceLyeg

    The more decent things I see on YT that come from HF the more I feel I need to make a cross border trip to the nearest HF, pick up a few things and come home. It's only about a four hour drive from here into Montana but I have no idea where the nearest HF is to there.
    What I should do is find a guy that lives close to the border have him grab the stuff I'd like from HF and I'll bring a bunch of stuff that they don't sell in the US and do an exchange.
    Good review.

    • @BeardedSeabee82
      @BeardedSeabee82  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah 4 hours to border, and then however much longer to great falls or billings would be bit of drive indeed. but with amazon now available in canada, i believe some offerings of harbor freight are available via there from what i understand. but doing an exchange with people (midwest tool reviews for instance) might be willing to do exchange for canada made ratchet (of similar cost/value say princess auto or some herbrand etc). plenty of us in community willing to do exchanges for sure. and thank you again for watching!

    The review is very fair. I have the 3/8 HB Pro Flex and I like everything about it except that switch. It moves on me, is backwards and does not have that positive engagement. But it’s a great tool that I use often, but in the back of my mind always keep listing for that Snap on or GearWrench.

  • @Hipsters_N_Hippies
    @Hipsters_N_Hippies 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Double up the washers if you run into a spot where this NON flex Pittsburgh Pro is your ratchet. It stabilizes everything nicely. This NON flex has shown in a video to put out 285 to 290ft lbs of torque before the drive snap shears off. Snappy usually cleanly twist shears off the drive at around 295ft lbs.
    The 1/4” drive (and I guess 3/8”) “composite” covered ratchet is definitely a nice one for battery/starter/alternator/fuse situations. However it’s not too strong, because it’s a quick release.
    The 1/4” flex head is a alright one to add to your box as well.

  • @snap-off5383
    @snap-off5383 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Never have I memorized the on and off direction of ratchets, I guess its because I have all kinds of different styles of switches on my ratchets, so I always set my ratchet with the old "twist and toggle if not right" method. I just got the 1/2" drive composite Pittsburgh Pro as a Christmas gift, and it doesn't bind in pulling up or pushing down. I'm really liking it a lot, I think its going to retire my 1/2" drive Proto. With coupon it was only $14. Perfect for "boat toolbox" so if it ends up at the bottom of the lake you're not crying.

    • @BeardedSeabee82
      @BeardedSeabee82  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The composites i took a look at when i was there, seemed decent, nice thing about them would be for use on batteries (terminals only need to be so tight i doubt 1/2" would come close break or wearing out). I only have a couple ratchets where the direction is different from everything else (one is a special use, and this hft is other lol). price tag for what you get is decent ratchet i will say indeed, thank you for helping convince me to" drop the lunch money" on it.

    These Harbor Freight ratchets do have their place for sure. For the price, I think they are more than capable. These are the type of tools that are perfect to keep in your vehicle for roadside emergencies. I do have quite a few tools from Snap On and SK but wouldn't dare keep them in my car due to somebody possibly stealing them. I keep those tools in the garage for my car restoration projects and occasionally I will get somebody coming by that needs something fixed.
    I have the Snap On 80 tooth locking flex head ratchet and it is a fine tool. It was worth what I paid for it hands down. As far as the Harbor Freight stuff goes, I'd take it over the Chinese Craftsman stuff any day of the week...the quality is pretty poor. Not only that, the Harbor Freight stuff is way less less expensive!!
    Also, people that want the pro quality tools should never underestimate the power of used stuff on Ebay!

      @BeardedSeabee82  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If there ever were a more true comment, it would be this one. I enjoy my snap on to be sure, but same as you, if that were to get stolen from my truck, yeah i would shit a brick, and also true on ised tools be it off truck, garage sale or ebay, they have a hell of lifetime warranty. Thank you for watching and commenting

    • @DR440
      @DR440 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for uploading as well. I was thinking about picking one of these ratchets up for my roadside kit. I have only had to use a Snap On warranty once for a broken tip on a screwdriver (20+ years old). I contacted them online and sent my old one in and got my replacement without issue. They were really great to deal with . SK has an awesome warranty as well. I sent my old ratchet to them and had my replacement in three weeks.
      I recently got one of the Pittsburgh pro 25" breaker bars and I'm happy with it so far as it's pretty robust and well worth the money. Taiwan tools have come a long way in quality in the last few years.

      this particular one i think plays its price point, warranty and (sometimes) availability well, it has its quirks to be sure, but is better than what they used to offer, there are still few others out there i think compete a bit higher, but for warranty purposes that is what some people go for especially if the store is on their way homeor just down street. all in all still decent ratchet

    Thank you for telling me how much better this Harbor Freight wrench is than that POS Snap-on wrench. Could you write to Snap-on and get them to change their switch to the "standard" everybody has always known: "Lefty Lucy, righty tighty." -You'd think that they'd want to be on board with the rest of the world! -Also it's terrible that you would have to wait for a truck to come driving up a week or possibly 2 later to replace those crappy snap-on wrenches. I'm so happy that I can just walk into Harbor Freight and hand them a broken wrench; and they had me a brand new tool 30 seconds later. God bless Harbor Freight!

      Actually for the 20 dollar range, in 3/8"dr ratchets i have stanley, capri, gear wrench, craftsman and tekton ratchets that all have a switch on them that actually works. That was case in point, i love it whwn people leave comments like this because it shows they never even watched farther than a minute or two or even bothered to listen to good that i do say in reviews. Oh and my 200 dollar ratchet is a 26in long soft grip locking flex head 1/2"dr 80 tooth ratchet/breaker bar not a 3/8 ratchet. And it gets the shit beat out of it every day (ya know being semi truck mechanic and all)

    I’ve been using these ratchets in the truck shop for a little while now and they’ve been doing a great job but I did have to grease them up. Mostly just the 1/2” and 3/8” long handle flex but they’ve done a fine job especially when others like to borrow your tools and they don’t show em respect. Brake chamber nuts, hub nuts (wheel seals changes), they haven’t skipped a beat. But... my new 18” locking 3/8” and 26” 1/2” Mac axis ratchets stay locked up for my use only lol. (Snap-On guy doesn’t show much anymore)

      Bearded Seabee82 another thing you could possibly try is take another washer or a thicker plastic washer between the anvil and the cover to stop it from getting rough. After watching your video I tried it and it tightened it up and good bit and the roughness went away. Kinda pointless for a cheap ratchet but I had to try it lol

    i agree...there is a place for every tool based on its owners purpose and frequency of use. in most cases, prefer snap on tools over all the others. i also think there are some tools that other manufacturers make better than snap on....like knipex side cuts and slip joint pliers.

    • @BeardedSeabee82
      @BeardedSeabee82  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tool truck can get pricey indeed as for knipex, man i couldnt agree more. Kind of like the snap on vice grips vs Vice Grip or the blue point ones (like the irwins and blue points better myself). there is always someone out there in the market that is going to have their niche, and this ratchet for what it costs fills some gaps on what harbor freight used to lack in their "decent" quality department. Bang for buck/decent spare indeed!

    Good review, I agree it's no Snap-On, but I will take it over any modern Craftsman(not the old ones), or the Husky from Home Depot. Not familiar with the Kobalt, as there is no Lowe's nearby. The Craftsman and Husky are much cruder in finish and operation, and I am pretty sure both are made in China, not Taiwan like the Pittsburgh Pro is, so probably not made in the same factory by the same company....

    I never realized that about the direction. Thanks. Does look nice the low profile. I hate that when your using a ratchet and it goes to the middle and quit working. But I'm fixed to when it warms and I get to my trailer out side. Guess since I'm not getting a tall tool box I'm gonna get me some smaller tool boxes and do like I used to. Have socket box then wrench box then screw driver. Which dad gave me 3 nice metal boxes which one I'm using for knifes I'll swap that out again. But I'm gonna get all dads out get table out and go thru everything keep 2 of each size. Then the extras try to make Danielle set then get mine out finish her set. Then the rest of mine I'll sell for tools I may need. But to be honest ide love 2 big box sets. Which there's the like 100 or 150 or 200 piece sets there OK but ide love like I said 2 of each wrench socket driver cause lots time you need 2 at the same time. But I've got a black hawk box I think almost full. And ide sell all and buy 2 sets but ain't selling dads. If I ever get me set I'll take Danielle and give her dads tools so she will keep and give her kids one day. OK I talked to much but I'll figure something out. Don't use many tools but nice to have. You have a good week good week. God bless

      Passing on sentimental tools is a good thing, having an extra also good, as for big tool boxes, the harbor freight carts seem to work well, light enough to move around too, but like ya said take care of that which you gotta get done first and kind of go from there. Am sure after you get better first then get everything kind of set up and organized into smaller boxes would make for interesting toolbox tour vid. Hope you get better soon! and thank you for watching, God Bless!

      Bearded Seabee82 yes I've been looking or attest if I could find a few tops don't need the bottom in my cargo trailer. But some tops could stack when I move. Cause in few years I'll be living in my truck pulling cargo or pulling camper so the bottom really want need. But new cost to much right now so looking for used but this spring I'm gonna get set up for my sale and post need 2 top 10 draw at least and see if someone wants to swap. But for now cheap small boxes or bags will do. Thanks sir. God bless

    I have there extendable 3/8 to 1/4 inch ratchet, and there 1/4 and 3/8 all there pro ratchets and there chrome sockets. And beat the shit out of them everyday in my shop. I use my Matco 1/2 impact with a reducer on the chrome Pittsburgh sockets all most everyday an have yet to break one of them. Now I've lost a few and had to buy a hole set to get just the 1 size.. I all so have there 56" top and bottom box and really like it.. Now I do have some other brands of tools like snapon and Mac and SK but for what I work on they do grate..
    Don't get me wrong some of there stuff is shit but some of it is pretty top notch as well.. Most of my name brand tools have been used eBay's stuff.. But anymore I just run over and pickup a set from HF.. The one 3/8-1/4" that I did break they swapped it out no questions asked.. But I've spent a lot of money at that same HF store and know more than one of the employees..

    I like the Pittsburgh Pro ratchets from HF, they do just fine and yes I use them fairly often. Given the Snap-On runs $130 for the similar ratchet and the Pittsburgh Pro is $18.99 you can buy 9 of the PB Pro ratchets with a coupon for one of the Snap-On and still get a no-hassle lifetime guarantee. Snap-On makes a good product but they are overrated nowadays. Just to qualify, I have been a mechanic since 1985 and own several Snap-On, Mac, Matco, and other brand ratchets. For the quality, money, and ease of replacement, I go with HF now. I prefer to put money in the bank and not hand it over to the tool man on the truck.

    • @BeardedSeabee82
      @BeardedSeabee82  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not going to disagree with the cost of snap on, biggest problem i jave with these hft's (other than the switch really does suck balls, males you want to throw it across the shop...) is that for their price tag on what you get there are alot more competitive options out there that are better overall over the hft. The new tektons for instance would be one.

    • @stauguastine
      @stauguastine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BeardedSeabee82 Like I said I have not had any issues with HFT, the hand tools mind you, so far. I agree, Tekton makes some awesome stuff, but the HF Icon brand is right in there with them as far as quality and pricing. I like the fact that when you buy a socket set from Tekton it is a complete set that goes above and beyond what others give you for your money. However, the downside right now with Tekton, which may change in the future, is their availability. Too many people are left to ordering online and getting replacements mailed instead of that day. They had to send me an 11 mm deepwell socket and it took almost two weeks to get it, a good thing I have extras in my box. However, I agree 100% Tekton so far has been an excellent alternative to truck tools and they are a far sight better than Husky, Craftsman, and the others. I know this much, far too many guys put too much pressure for their ratchets to perform like breaker bars like they don't even know there is such a thing as a breaker bar. I don't do that, I use tools for their intended purpose. Saves time and money that way. ... but then again, at my age I may just be being old and crotchety. Keep the videos coming man I love them. Also, if we didn't argue tools at tool talk we wouldn't be real mechanics. LOL take care man and have a great Christmas. I am thinking about starting a tool talk kind of thing where guys can get together and talk about their individual experiences with these tools so people can get a couple different perspectives. There are those tools that I will not go "cheaper" and will get from the truck because in the long run it saves time and that is money.

    Your description matches the composite exactly...exactly. They also look exactly the same inside. Only functional difference is a screw holding the switch instead of a pin. Don't much care for the way it copies the SnapOn ... that's pretty sleazy. If it's the same ratchet as the composite I'd rather have the composite. It's probably a little quieter than the composite but the oiled composite is plenty quiet.

    • @hachi-rokuperformancegroup3987
      @hachi-rokuperformancegroup3987 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jhitt79 actually I'm in no debt and will never be with my tools. My dad retired without ever going into debt either. Maybe some people do because of poor decisions and wanna be cool and own everything. Also my dad was able to downsize his tools to what he needs for personal work and sold the rest for a good chunk of change and good brands have resale value and cheap crappier tools don't have much resale value so really comes down to the person and how they manage their money and tool addiction

    • @jhitt79
      @jhitt79 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hachi-Roku Performance Group you and your dad sound wise. How many people do you know though that are making payments to the snap-on truck? Life for many people is just a fashion show. They have to have a $10,000 tool box, the latest $1000 iPhone, new vehicles,etc. they have the appearance of wealth but it's all on credit and if they got hurt and couldn't make it to work for a month they'd lose it all. I also am not in debt (besides my mortgage) and make a living with my hands/tools. I get a little annoyed at the statements like "brand x belongs in the shop and brand y is for d.i.y.ers" because for the most part isn't true. I have to ask, are professionals just more fond of paying interest? I'm more into providing for my family then the finance companies family. Not hating on anyone really but I personally would rather deal with a backwards switch (that isn't backwards if that's what your used to) then a ratchet that is severely overpriced.
      In the resale scenario that you give, I agree that truck brands will have a higher resale but that's still not really good investment thinking. Here's reality, less expensive tool costs $20 vs. $120 for S.O. 40 years later $20 tool is worth nothing vs. S.O. is worth (let's say) $80. Who took the bigger loss? Also IF a person is wise and saves money where they can and makes real investments then they can easily retire a millionaire.
      If you invested the $100 you saved by buying the "cheaper ratchet", added just $1 a month for 40 years at current (and fairly consistent) interest rates for I.R.A.'s you'd end up with about $9,800!!!!
      That's possible from the savings of JUST ONE TOOL! And I got those numbers from a compound interest calculator on a government website. So it's not just my opinion, numbers don't lie.

    • @hachi-rokuperformancegroup3987
      @hachi-rokuperformancegroup3987 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jhitt79 I see your point and too many people in debt and I only buy what I can pay for up front (the best tip my dad gave me). I don't like the fact that people shoot down others because their tools and I grew up on craftsman USA and got shot down for my ratchets but to be honest I buy gearwrench ratchets as I got the 4 piece flex head set for under $90 and my hf seems to be the same price or within $10. If it wasn't for that backwards switch I would give them a shot but its something that messes with me a lot because I forget and reflex memory kicks in. I buy the tool I need and like and try to stay off the rape truck unless I absolutely need to.

      craftsman, stanley, capri, snap on, gear wrench, matco, mac, carlysle, cornwell, ares, the newer tekton, powerbuilt, switches all oriented same direction. Biggest fault on the switches on hft ratchets is they will not stay in place and free float. if you set it down in say the "off" position, then you pick it up again still expecting it to be in "off" position, the great chance of swtich floating to neutral and not doing anything is what i hate most about the hft ratchets.

      Never said it was a no go, i just hate the free floating switches on them, had it not been for that wouldve been hella bang for buck ratchet, as i said in vid (and apparently people dont listen to them when they see the title) it is a very fair priced ratchet, for starting up, backup, home, truck kit, etc etc etc(etc) would do alright for what it does and what it is.....

    Snap on tools aren't expensive they are overpriced period.
    Cost of ratchet from Snap on factory $46. Cost of same ratchet from Snap on truck $146. The tool truck guy is making his money lol

      Just disecting the ratchet for what it is. Had lots of requests to review this one. It was what it was, smooth action, weak pawl design, shitty free floating switch. But as i said overall for an $18 ratchet, not bad for home, diy, beginner mechanic, backup, or car/truck kit.
