Yes ! Back on the tyres, a great step forward 😊 just getting ready to spray underside of mine then I’ll be looking at re-fitting the suspension too - can’t wait. Good job Dave 👍🍺
I had a mk1 1100L back in the day. We put Mexico-2” struts on the front and 2” lowering blocks on the back (between spring and axel). Finished off with full chrome rostyle wheels with 185/70/13. We did change the front wings for Sport ones, and did a slight trim to the rear arches. Looked awesome 😊
I would agree about water based paint, it may be environmentally friendly but if it needs 3 coats and still looks crap then not worth the effort . As I've just had the same experience last weekend ending up going and getting normal solvent based paint to finish the job Cars coming on great anyway 👍
Just check those top mounts The bearing is held in with a circlip This needs to be on the bottom so that the weight of the vehicle is pushing the bearing into the top mount instead of the weight being against the circlip 👍
I have to say Dave it was all going well and now it’s gone to sh!te just to do you a favour il pop over with my trailer and take that nightmare off your hands now. 😊 mate as always progression is the key and it’s flying now. Hope your health is good fella keep going
That was excellent, wish I'd see this episode 40 yrs ago, my special brew front shocks weren't a patch on yours! Won't rear spring lowering blocks cause a whole load of axle tramp with that power and torque... I notice you never welded any radius rod bracets on the shell before you painted it?
Hi Neil, the shell does have tramp bar brackets, not ones I've seen before, but it's an export shell with short bars, I've yet to refit them as I can't find any new bushes for them. Possibly a DIY solution upcoming on that front
Looks a good stance, a little lower on the rear well help traction. Great Job on the coil overs, well up to the job mate. Bet your excited to roll her around just with man power 😂
Another great video Dave, you are saving yourself a lot of money doing a lot of the work yourself. I bought decambered leaf springs and GAZ coilovers for my mk2, great for getting the ride height spot on! Just need to chop and reweld the Ashley downpipe as it hangs too low! Old fords are still such great fun 😊
Great video Dave, coilovers look great. Water based paint I didn't like. Cars sitting nice. Vevor air jack " another weld job for you bud ". I thought about getting one then I never bothered I'll stick to the hydraulic high lift. All the best.
When God created the Mk1 Escort, they created you to save them. Genius level unlocked here again. Well done Dave. Couple of questions on this. You seem to have a small portable yellow light that you use. Where did you get it from and what make are those shears you used in this video to cut the metal for the coilovers?
Hi David, good to see your project moving too, mate. The light on the welding helmet is just a hikers headtorch that I've bolted on, helps loads tbh. The snips are aviation shears, search.app?link=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.diy.com%2Fdepartments%2Fdewalt-dwht14674-0-301mm-aviation-snips-right-cut%2F3253560146740_BQ.prd&Csh%2Fx%2Fgs%2Fm2%2F4
Dave could you do an episode on welding. I’ve got a a series frontera sport and the sills need doing but I’ve never picked up a welder in my life. I have no idea about settings , speed etc
Also Dave, if you turned the old shock the other way round in your vice, it would be pushing your vice downwards into your workbench instead of trying to pull your vice out of the bench..
I'm curious, do you think you could you have cut the spring seat off with a pipe cutter? Do you think it would have been more or less work/harder or easier to do? Maybe the shape of it didn't give room to use one but I was just wondering. Lovely job of those coil overs, many years ago we put Mk1 Capri front legs on my brother's Mk1 Escort as the spring seats were lower, so with lowered springs it really exaggerated the lowering effect. What you've done would have been a good way to go if we had the welding equipment and skills back then, (though I wonder if the parts to do so were available). We managed to get single leaf Mk2 Escort rear springs on somehow too, I think they were slightly wider so didn't fit the mounting points without some work. Obviously the had the obligatory lowering blocks of the era.😄
Hi, I expect a decent sized pipe cutter to suit 2inch tube wouldn't fit, also in my experience of pipe cutters, they tend to bend into the tube as it cuts, so would likely cause more issues.

Nothing wrong with that, a lot of people only weld the bottom of the coilover tubes and even then they don’t just break off, I did bottom and top like you did for extra strength
Great vid as always Dave hope your health is ok
Great work, good seeing the car down on it wheels👍
Makes a big difference
very interesting watching you adopt the front suspension to coil overs, and looks great
Neat work on the struts Dave, Thanks for the heads up on the water based Hammerite.
This all takes me back when I was building my Escort MK 1 Mexico for road rally’s and the odd single venue, looking good keep up the good work cheers.
Yes ! Back on the tyres, a great step forward 😊 just getting ready to spray underside of mine then I’ll be looking at re-fitting the suspension too - can’t wait. Good job Dave 👍🍺

Classic mods back in the day 👌
She's looking great Dave, well done mate 👍 👏
Get some helper springs for the front coils ... Stops your springs falling out on full droop
Good idea, thanks 😊
brilliant and not a car verticle ad to be seen brillian as the welsh say lush

First and last time I'll be using it
It’s ok if you spray it .but brushing it on its worse than useless ..
Just check those top mounts

👍

Can tell it’s getting cold as for the majority of the video Dave’s got his big coat on!
Interesting video, very informative 👍🏻
🤣 yep suddenly got a bit chilly in the garage
Another great video 👌
Looking good now
Hi Dave, fantastic work as usual, also interesting, hope you're keeping well. Cheers.
Thanks, yep keeping the ticker in good order thanks 😊
Great work Dave 👍🏾good to see lots of money saving ideas, as you know the cost can get high on builds! Not to far to go now, the car is look great 😊👍🏾
Thanks Darren, yep, it's at this stage the build cost can get out of hand 😫
@ 🤦🏾♂️😂👍🏾
Good work Dave, and very timely as my son is determined to spend far too much on coilovers for his Subaru... Thanks for the video.
Excellent 😊
Nice work as usual Dave! 👍
I must say that as someone around your age Dave, I'm thoroughly impressed that you are able to work on your knees! 😜💪
Ha, funnily enough, as a plumber I'd expected my knees to be munched, but it's my back that gives me the most gip
@@DavesGarageuk Wow! Even more impressive. 💪
Liked the video looking forward to next one well done 👍

Springy indeed 🤣
Great video Dave another master class on making parts keep up the good work
Thanks 👍
Coming along great dave nice ride height
Thanks 👍
Are you fitting tramp bars Dave? I highly recommend it with the extra power. Even a panhard rod to be fair.
It has got tramp bars of sorts, shorter than usual, it's an export shell. Yet to refit them, can't find bushes for them
@@DavesGarageuk have a chat with Powerflex up here in North Wales, they will make a set for you.
Another step closer..
Well done Dave my first video on a coil over conversion they are so expensive to buy new
They are daft expensive, that's why I've done my own. Even if I could afford to throw £1000's at them I wouldn't

Surely with a McPherson strut as standard, the car is already on coilovers at the front?
Strictly speaking, I suppose so, but not in the common use of the term

Dave are the single leaf rear springs from 2.8 capri they look great
I believe they're mk2 escort updated jobbies with the front slimmed down to fit mk1 shell
Dave will you wait until you have the fifteen inch wheels and profile choice of tyres before you set your final suspension heights?
Yes, and with the interior etc

Normal black gloss paint frm wilkinsons or wickes iz far better : thts wot we used
