    This has been super helpful for me to realize I can cut it and it will be OK! Thank you for giving me the exact video I was looking for! This is great!

    Thanks for making this clear how to prune them. I've been looking around on here to try to find out what to do in Spring for Salvias and Snapdragons that have made it over the winter. Last Fall I trimmed them to about 8 inches, and now I can see they are starting to grow. This is the first year I've had them. Excellent instructions on the Salvias! I don't want them to be leggy, so I'm going to prune them down some.

    I have never pruned salvias so harshly. Mine are 1.5 meter accros flowering masses. I prune one third off in spring or if it gets to the path to much. One of the have split under the weight of snow but I taped it and it grew back to 1 stem again.

    Some good information but I really would like to have seen a closeup of the exact place the plant stems are cut. I don't know what a bud is so I will go elsewhere to learn. Of course, I can always guess!!!

    Would it help covering them when there’s a heavy frosting and feeding them aswel?

    do you do this in autumn in the UK then? Would it matter if its never been pruned like that for 5 years or so?

    Do we need to overwinter them indoors such as a garage or conservatory?

      depend of your weather. They dont like negatives temperatures.

    Great video! It's Aug, I'm in zone 9b (I think), and the salvias in my garden have not been cared for since planting. We're also in a heat wave, with days temps 90s to 100s. When would be a good time to prune them way down like you have? They've never been pruned for since they were planted. Thank you!!

    I’ve 2 salvias in the ground and one in a pot - do I’ve to dig the former and pot them? Should I then keep them inside my shed?

    These are smaller potted plants. They are supposed to grow up to 3-4’. Does it grow to this height every year? Can I just trim/prune some branches to keep the height? New to Salvias. Thanks

    It is the end of October nearly - is it too late to prune? I bought a Cherry Lips and planted it a few weeks ago as I have no overwintering facility. I didn't know what would give it the best chance to survive winter- pruning or not? I heard you shouldn't plant til spring so bit worried already ! It's at top of slope in a fenced garden in Essex. In a North East facing island bed . Not sure how well draining the soil texture is...

      october is to early. Mine in France still grow and make flowers in october. I've even done some cutting in october.

    Thanks for this. We have about 10 varieties of Salvias in the garden. Because they can get a bit out of control, I did prune them quite bit I think around January and two of them just didn't come back :-(. Saw I thought I will do some research this time around. Just to understand. You do this pruning in two stages? One half way first, then you wait until the shoots come from the bottom and then scale back to the bottom? Thanks.

    • @drefhill
      @drefhill 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      what temperature do you get in winter ? They dont like freezing.

    My microphyllas are growing over the path in October. Can I prune them back to edge or will I lose them in the Winter?

    i cut my salvia the red one back in March. Because of Covid i wasn't here in November, it has been a fantastic bush but now it looks dead. It has one or two green shoots very spindly. is there anything i can do.

    Thank you for the helpful information! My Rockin’ Deep Purple salvias didn’t make it during winter 2022, and thus never came back the following winter. I pruned them to about an inch above the soil. Do I need to mulch them at all to protect against frost? I live in zone 8b. Thanks so much in advance

    Something that would be helpful is to show the finished plant with a plain backgroundso it is easy to see what you have done (rather than a plant behind, or yourself behind, or off screen). Great explanation of what you are doing though.

    Hi. Would you happen to know if Ecuadorian salvia go dormant in the fall without buds?
    I’m concerned I over watered it. Thanks

    I have found that only "Hot Lips" is hardy(ish).

  • @laurelsayer7557
    @laurelsayer7557 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm confused, I thought that because they're not very hardy you were meant to leave old foliage on plants like Salvia Hotlips over Winter to protect them from the cold, then prune in Spring.

    • @barrybodiongan6684
      @barrybodiongan6684 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I know its quite confusing, but this is what I gather, you have to prune twice for the Hotlips. Once at the end of the summer pruning just the flowers leaving the longer stems so it can be protected in the winter cold. Then prune in the spring so it can flower for the summer.

    I wouldn’t do this to my garden plants. I prune them in mid April. They have loved our global warming here in south London. They are top favourites for me.

      I don't bring my potted Salvias in for winter. They are growing like crazy right now. So I guess it depends on where you live and how you care for it.

      Some are much more hardy than others. A harsh winter is another thing, I suppose. They take from cuttings very easily, though

    • @drefhill
      @drefhill 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      you need to have positive temperatures and sun in your barn.
