There's something about that child's performance in the first movie that I feel they couldn't replicate in the other two movies. She looked so... Regal. And she really acted and sounded the part, too. She had a dignified air to her. I know being a senator and a queen are very different roles, but she somehow LOOKED like a kid thrown into a situation she's too young to handle, yet she still instinctively knows how to, at least, act like she has things under control.
So yes, I'd say the extra effort was indeed worth it.
Two best things about the Phantom Menace were Darth Maul and Amidala's costumes.
And podracing!
Why wasn't the designer given an Oscar or at LEAST a nomination? The costumes are BEAUTIFUL!
i wish there were copyrights for national costumes, music and even fairytales cause its getting messy. they didn’t even bother to mention about the source of inspiration

@Henrik Abellare No, cause Hollywood wasn’t PC then. Only now. They reward rip offs all the time. Also only one costume was based on Mongolian queen.
I would’ve been interested to see them include the floating scepter she had in the concept art for this costume.

I wonder if this particular dress had inspirations from Eastern attire? As someone who's Chinese it reminds me of what the Empresses of China used to wear, especially the head dress.

it's more Mongolian. If you google Mongolian Empress and scroll through the images it's clear where they got their inspiration.
since all Manchurian empress historically by many reasons were selected only from Mongolian clans it make sense that also all female costumes came with those princess to Mancurian imperial court. Even well-known сheongsam that many people associate with Chinese culture in fact derived from Mongolian deel.
