I've not tried it out doors apart from in the back of a van in a rather dark wood. I would imagine that it would be OK in the shade but your mileage may vary. Bigger issue may be glare on the acrylic. It has to be lighter inside than out to see through. You could always use the focus cloth from the camera to help with this.
