- In our next episode in our series on Plato’s five forms of government we’re looking at Timocracy, or rule by honour and duty. In this video I’m going to give you a detailed definition of Timocracy with reference to Plato’s Republic as well as modern day examples. If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend you watch my previous video on Aristocracy, the link is in the description. Also, subscribe for the next episodes in this series I’m doing. Let’s get to it.

In the Republic, Plato represents Timocracy as a degeneration from Aristocracy. The Philosopher Kings in Aristocracies that have a perfect balance of intellect and wisdom are replaced by people that prioritise honour and duty. These more militarily inclined, less philosophical rulers prioritise their own power over the good of the nation. Plato represents Timocracy as the middle ground between Aristocracy and Oligarchy where greed rules. In this sense it is important to underline that Plato had great respect for Timocracy, he lauds states like Sparta for constructing their society like an army and not ceding to a materialistic oligarchy, or the kind of anarchistic system that Plato represents democracies as.
Modern day examples of timocratic systems include the UK House of Lords, where the majority of members are appointed due to their loyalty to whatever party is in government. As well as this some have argued that Trump is a timocrat as he espouses this prioritisation of honour and duty over substance. His election slogan further reflects this, ‘make america great again’ so devoid of substance yet still imbued with that intangible and subjective word great? what’s greatness? The Constitution? Merica?
To conclude, Timocracy is the middle ground between Aristocracy and Oligarchy, the next step on Plato’s degeneration into Tyranny. Timocrats prioritise duty and honour over more philosophical virtues, their leaders are more power hungry and less inclusive of all. Yet they are not as bad as Oligarchs as we’ll find out next week. Stay tuned. Thanks for watching, please like, share and subscribe!

Thank you!
keep it going please!
but trump is a businessman he fits the oligarchy more
All politicians are businessmen
He's not even a successful businessman. He's trying to appeal to people who love oligarchs but the reality is he went bankrupt multiple times and has very large debts. I would say he's actually more of a popularist democrat or maybe even a tyrant.
@@savvageorge Thomas Jefferson, Henry Ford, Walt Disney, and Abraham Lincoln all went bankrupt yet proved they could bounce back. Elon Musk almost went bankrupt numerous times. Trump never personally declared bankruptcy which does indicate he has an inherit feel for business as he knows when to push the “buttons” for relief. The truth is, successful people are almost always more inclined to take risk. Doesn’t always work, sometimes it does.
Fred left behind roughly $20 million in cash to his kids and grandkids. So Trump received somewhere around $1-$3 million in cash. He received much more in hard assets but we need to keep in mind, to borrow against these massive properties is incredibly ballsy. Your back is against the wall and he made it work in real estate until he could branch out and try other businesses on the side. Not all of them worked. Not every real estate deal worked. But he is in fact a very skilled business man just like the aforementioned people I started this comment noting.
@@savvageorgeplease explain to me how he appeals to oligarchs, when his entire campaign is about the forgotten middle class. When all the big corporation’s have donated to opposition super PACS. Please add how is a tyrant after he was in office and effectively stripped his power in the executive branch and delegated more tasks to those in his cabinet
@@BrianJones-cu2sx If you look at his actions during the Covid pandemic this will tell you everything you need to know about him. Big drug companies making billions releasing unsafe products with Trump's approval. Trump was loving those jabs and publically promoting. Everyone would be on their 10th booster now if Trump was still in charge.
OH YES!! IT LOOKS LIKE, that we...HAVE EXERIENCED SOME TYRANNY AGAIN!!!...And with a VERY CUNNING WAY...TO BE HONEST!!!...
How do you like Biden as the president?
Wow.. everyone is dating these days… dating is super dangerous unless if both sides do not expect longevity and are actively surveying for other prospective partners… which sucks if you have other ideals..
